  1. my cousin and I have each held "Independent [insert name her] Memorial Golf Classic" events when we each got married (he was my best man, and I was his). We even printed out little brochures with maps to the golf club, quotes and pictures of famous people not attending, and some prizes. It was a great time and only about $30 per person. But that was just the golf, of course.
  2. That's Bob Shepperd for you (Yankee PA guy). The guy's like 90-years old and doesn't even pay attention to the game as it is played. He reads books and does crossword puzzles. No joke.
  3. the only thing that I "fear" is Soto messing with him behind the plate and/or figuring some things out with Sheets when he catches him and then passing those "cheats" on to his Cubs teammates. I guess Benny could counter that action, though by throwing a fastball when Soto calls for a curve in the dirt.
  4. seeing as no Brewer pitcher has ever started the all-star game (that I recollect, at least), it is a tremendous honor. It is something else that I can be proud of as a Brewer fan.
  5. sure seems like it, doesn't it? Personally, if I'm an advanced scout, I'm telling my manager, "don't even bother with your good pitchers starting against Milwaukee. Throw your worst guys out there to start the game. Heck we'll call some career minor leaguer up if need be." Is it because we can hit good fastballs but the slower fastball and other junk not? Is that why we have no problem, it seems, with the aces of the majors (it seems)?
  6. ewiz, that's awesome. Way to stick it to the man! I would have loved to have been the guy that bought your tickets. Or at least seen his face when you mentioned that your tickets were only $20. too bad you can't sell gasoline and do the same thing.
  7. yeah, b19, the wife and I did all that last summer (zoo, arch, etc.) and loved it. Really made our day. We also took the ballpark tour, which was nice. Only problem we had was the humidity with the heat. Us AZ folks take a while to get used to the humidity, although we used to live in WI so we were at least prepared for it and knew how to deal with it. Needless to say, we made several "trips" in to see the penguins at the zoo. But the long walk to and from the Metrolink station to the zoo nearly did the wife in. Didn't help that the previous day she slept in the car and felt generally "sick" from heatstroke (caused from our afternoon in Petrified Forest where she didn't apply much sunscreen). Yeah, that was a fun all-day drive from New Mexico to St. Louis. But I digress . . . St. Louis really impressed me with the things that you can do. I'll agree that downtown was a relative ghost town during the day. We didn't really see all that many people, even at the Landing. We didn't stay out past 7 pm, though. Took the MetroLink back to our hotel by the airport and rested.
  8. I won't be looking it up tonight as I'm going to watch a movie with the wife, but my guess is that our stumbles the past few years have been post-all star break. Specifically, the 2nd half of July up to the deadline (although the entire month of August seems to ring a bell re: suckitude)
  9. all go out on a limb and say that these are xbox360 and/or PS3 titles? The only one I've heard of is the Star Wars one, and I don't think that's coming to PC. Oh, and I guess I tried the Fable PC demo and came away semi-impressed.
  10. are you Doug Melvin?
  11. Old school is awesome. I've been playing my old Sega Saturn all week.
  12. yeah, but that's the thing; we don't take walks very well. Could be a long night. Or we knock him out early--one of the two.
  13. I'm absolutely positive that CC would want to re-sign with the Brewers long-term. He could make more money that way. Plus, being a backup middle infielder and bench warmer while getting paid to do so has GOT to be the most awesome job on the planet. Oh, you meant Sabathia. I don't think there's much chance he comes back unless we win it all or he develops personal man-crushes on his teammates in Milwaukee and takes a slight discount to stay with a team with (supposedly) good chemistry.
  14. well, no offense to that family or any family, but why on earth would you put your child (seven years old, at that) in a seriously high danger zone at a baseball game. Sure the odds are slim of getting hit, but it's you child! If you want to sit close, at least sit behind the screen or something. My wife and I have spoken about this many times at games and have already decided before we even have kids that (a) our kids will not be going to a ballgame until at least 8 years old IF they want to go (we're not going to force them), and (b) we will be sitting a decent distance away from the playing field until they are older (teens +) to get them to appreciate "bad seats" (build character) and keep them safe from Jeromy Burnitz, er, I mean bats and balls.
  15. pretty accurate stuff. My cousin and I would mimic batting stances of Brewers and other players in the majors back when we were kids playing wiffleball.
  16. by the way, if you read between the lines of tonight's BOC blog, there will be a woot-off the week of July 21st, highly likely at 12:00 am Thursday July 24th. So, stay up that night!
  17. if I remember correctly, the Jays are wearing them for several games this year, kind of like the Brewers wearing their retro gear. Not sure what the specifics are but I know it's not a one-time only deal.
  18. that's pretty cheap and cheesy from Bowden, Rijo, and anybody else. You have to be pretty low to do something like that. Wow.
  19. I'm sure there's some stipulation in the collective bargaining agreement or the individual player contracts to prevent this from happening, but I could see some day a player suing a team over lost future wages or something over this exact same type of situation.
  20. The thing about those Viagra commercials (or the other brands, too) is that the guys in the commercial are all in their 40s or older, but the wives, for the most part, appear to be in their 20s and 30s. Obviously younger and obviously very petite.
  21. thanks for the information re: Zone alarm basic. I had no idea.
  22. boy, when was the last time we did our West Coast swing so late in the year? The SD, LA, SF trip is usually in April or May (or so it seems).
  23. I see Zonealarm Free is not on the list, though. Or is that Zone Alarm Basic Firewall? just editing here: I've spent the last 2 hours re-setting my entire home network. After a good hour of the darn windows thing continually installing (even though I have the windows "option" to let me choose when to install them!), I set my zone alarm to medium only to find that the rolling monsoon storm and (very) short power outages completely reset my router! I had to find the data sheet and then re-enter it all and set up the network again. Not fun! Compounded with the windows thing, it has not been a fun internet day in my household. Luckily, I think I've got it all working again. But the zone alarm is still set at only "medium" which does NOT please me at all. They better fix this! (I did download the Zone Alarm Basic Firewall from casey's link but haven't installed it yet. I'm hoping there will be an "easier" fix in the next couple of days.)
  24. It's rainy monsoonal buckets here and I'm loving every minute of it. First storm of the year is always the best.
  25. yes, it did help. Thanks for the link. I guess I'll make sure not to install any updates for a little while. darn you, MS.
