  1. Yes, and I believe it’s even more acute when it comes to prospects. We have had Peter Gammons in Boston; Jayson Stark in Philly; Olney, Joel Sherman and a slew of others in New York etc. They tend to get very myopic with the prospects in their markets and then have a national stage to tout the prospects. As a result, prospects from those organizations get a lift.
  2. Nate, I believe Santana went to the Cubs in the trade yesterday.
  3. It would be an exaggeration for me to say I am an expert on the prospects the Cubs got. I have read about them recently because the Pads are a team we have dealt with last year and could again. But I suspect the Cubs’ fans’ temper tantrums won’t age well. The prospects for the most part are oozing with projectable talent and they are very young. As we all know, success requires a lot more than physical ability, or else Monte Harrison and Corey Ray would look like Willie Mays. The Cubs played the odds and I would not dismiss the notion that they get their next Gleyber Torres or Eloy Jiminez.
  4. The Brewers and Padres made a deal last year. They very well could be having dialogue. The Padres have emptied out 7 of their top 16 prospects or so. Then you have to say Gore, Campusano, and Abrams are off limits. But then maybe a discussion could involve something like Hader for Jake Cronenworth (assuming we think he can play third), Robert Hassell, and Ryan Weathers. Brewers get a young left handed bat with at least five years of control, a very young player in Hassel who is a long way away but was a high pick and is known for a really good hit tool. Brewers don’t have a lot of high upside middle of the order bats. Hassell could be groomed at first or corner outfield. Weathers profiles similarly to Small and Ashby.
  5. Cubs land some high upside guys who are very young. And they got four of them, so there is a solid chance that a couple end up being big time prospects. I’d be happy with a deal like that if the Brewers had an expensive veteran pitcher to deal.
  6. The other one that comes to mind is when we landed Greinke and Marcum in succession.
  7. I don’t want Darvish but I might be intrigued by a package like that for Hader.
  8. As a comparison, the Brewers' #3 and #6 ranked prospects are lefties Ethan Small and Aaron Ashby. Tough to find a easy comparison to Crowe and Yean. Someone like Zach Brown is probably a notch below Crowe. Brewers don't really have many young pitching prospects. Antoine Kelly maybe? I would have Kelly off the table. I’m very high on him. His ceiling is very high, IMO.
  9. Suarez would be nice. I wouldn’t include Mitchell. Turang is a nice prospect but I’m ok with dealing him because we have Garcia. Mitchell is a stud athlete and very promising as our CF of the future. That contract is big but probably commensurate with his production. It would free up third for Moose and open up salary. Maybe since Williams left their front office they are pivoting. He would give us nice middle of the order production.
  10. Crawford had 134 K’s vs 27 BB’s in 2019 and is still only 23. We know Stearns looks for that data.
  11. I like the acquisition especially as a southpaw. Who knows, maybe he will just be a Wilkerson. But, we’ve seen first hand unheralded pitchers like Davies and Suter perform well. You know Stearns and our front office looks hard at strikeout to walk ratio, even when it’s a guy without high velo, particularly when that ratio is sky high. Regarding Rule 5 and timing, I had a Jordan Sheffield theory, but he was snapped up in the Rule 5 draft.
  12. Good point. Avi Garcia is a good example. He had that .330 year and he’s a big kid who can run. But we saw his game, and it was a bad acquisition especially at that whopping salary. Our analytics guys missed on that one. The Rays did not.
  13. Thank you for that link. Great read. As a kid, I had just become a fan when he was in the twilight of his career. I remember his baseball cards and the second big memory I have of him is the fact that the media invariably referred to him as moody, mercurial, enigmatic, complicated etc., as accurately chronicled in that story. I used to read a ton of sports periodicals and books at the time, including Sport Magazine and the Sporting News. So I can absolutely vouch for the fact that the Fangraphs piece was very accurate about the negative portrayal of him by the press. The baseball press in that era tended to have folks who were too big for their britches. It’s a pity that the lasting image the press laid on him to readers like me (as a young kid) was their characterization of his personality and not what a splendid hitter he was. In addition, the overt racism he (and others) faced is mind numbing and confounding. He had some other rough moments. RIP Mr Allen
  14. I hope we keep the pick and go to a youth movement. We can have a mini rebuild while remaining competitive. You have a core of Yelich, Hiura, Woody, Burnes and Williams and hopefully build around them with younger talent.
  15. My guess is the Brewers didn’t want to spend even that much. They are headed to TJMAX looking for bargains.
  16. I’m not as alarmist on Hader’s value as some are. You definitely don’t panic-sell him and Stearns has never done such a thing. He never did trade Braun. If you can’t get value for him, and you are relegated to pay him $7M you do it. Financial austerity is fine in theory but that’s a manageable number given what an impact talent he is. You need to balance the assets on your ballclub with the concomitant outlays. Here it’s worth it to pay the salary if need be. The whole league knows Stearns wants a lot for him. Either somebody will give it up to get an *absolute weapon* (let’s not kid ourselves) or Milwaukee keeps him with three years of control. As Jopal wisely pointed out, we can always trade him later if someone pulls the trigger on the value we want. If you’re another team in the heat of a race, you might spend prospect capital—which is theoretical anyway—to get an edge. If that market isn’t there now, wait. But don’t panic.
  17. Jordan Sheffield is a name on that list that pops out at me. He’s not been able to solve the control problem but he was a fairly well regarded name at one point. I forgot about Jeren Kendall. He has really struggled with the hit tool. I was hoping we found a way to bring Knebel back at a lower number.
  18. What are the two levels that will be removed? Rookie and A plus?
  19. Thanks for sharing. Very interesting article. There was some food for thought in there. I still wonder about the Chisox and whether they’d be interested. I did like Toronto’s package. It might make sense for both teams. I agree with others that SD might be interested to attack the Dodgers. But I’d prefer the offer be re-jiggered from that. Regardless, I put Toronto at the top. Groshans coming back makes a lot of sense for both teams. Milwaukee is very focused on up the middle athletes in the draft and Latin acquisitions. But you’d like a Groshans type profile who can grow into third. Third base is actually a tough position to find. You need a certain amount of quickness, range, arm, accuracy, hit tool, pop, etc. This is going to be a fun off season. I expect some trades, maybe some eye popping ones. We can’t spend a ton in free agency so I think we will see wheeling and dealing. Beyond that, we looked old and slow last year. Let’s get some fresh juice and younger energy in the lineup.
  20. Looks like a Trademark violation. Brewers could ask for a cease and desist. The question is whether the Brewers would do that to public servants like police.
  21. This says a lot about who they value. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe File cranked up his velocity in the spring this year. I want to say it was via the pitching lab. I’m going off memory but I read an article on File in March. Regardless of stats, Supak wasn’t highly valued. But File and Bettinger seem to be.
  22. Connaughton seems like an overpay. Maybe the Bucks are letting all the big contracts absorb aggregate cap space. Maybe they can get some bargains. I would really like to see a wing come in who is nasty and tough on the defensive end. Need a backup point and a backup big.
  23. I have watched that very thing develop more and more over the past 30 years in organizations and corporations. The only conclusion that I can come up with, is that executive management create additional levels of executive management so when things go wrong, there are more people to point the finger at and deflect blame to them. College football staffs are notoriously convoluted. You will get co-coordinators and assistant head coaches, all to avoid getting assistants from getting poached and getting them some staggering incomes.
  24. We never seem to pick corner infielders and with the exception of Hiura don't pick bat first guys. Our drafts are all about middle of the diamond athletes and nearly all of them come with questionable hit and power tools. I think the premise is sound. Heck Gorman Thomas was a ss when he was drafted. But it’s one thing to have a sound premise but entirely different when they’ve gone totally, foaming in the mouth, overboard with it. The way they think they might have passed over Prince Fielder. Third base is certainly a position that’s hard to fill and takes a special athlete there. Sometimes you get a SS who outgrows it but we need to diversify a bit with our focus IMO. 1B requires special bats. I’m sick of the Reynolds, Carter, Aguilar, Smoak ideas. It’s been too many years of this to not have learned a lesson by now.
  25. I don’t know if it’s a conditioning issue but definitely trying to figure out why Woody starts wearing down around the 4th-5th inning. It’s been such an oddball season, maybe he got out of synch with being stretched out. Hopefully it’s corrected by next year because it caps his upside this year.
