My line of thinking stems from maximizing the next two years of Woodruff, Burnes, and to a lesser extent Adames. We need to raise the floor and ceiling of this team, and I am not even talking about winning a world series I am talking about just making the playoffs. The six teams that made the playoffs in the NL on paper are all going to be just as strong as last year. I realize the game is not played on paper and there will be a lot of volatility but right now I see us a little bit below the Phillies now that they added Trea Turner's 5 wins with the snap of a finger. Anyway Sean Murphy is one of the few players that raises the floor and ceiling of the team. He also leads the league in pop time which will be important as controlling the running game will become more valuable in the new MLB enviornment.
Yes that would be a lot to give up but look at the depth in our outfield in the system. Chourio, Frelick, Mitchell, Ruiz, Wiemer. Yes some will fail but even if some will, do we really have room for all of them to maximize their value for us? If I have to subtract from our plethora of OF prospects I would.
Turang I am just not sure how good he really is offensively, love the glove and love his speed. Having said that, I wouldn't hesitate to cash in on his perceived value knowing he will never come close to having any sort of power with a career minor league ISO of .102, without a great hit tool we could just be talking about a player who may just have a career like Kevin Newman.
Gasser would sting but that would be the price of doing business.
Having said all that even these 3 as the framework wouldn't be enough. My guess is it is going to take two guys in the top 100 close to MLB ready or that have a small amount of MLB experience. So yes probably a pipe dream.
