  1. Even worse than hating the pick on draft day because the hate of the selection is increasingly becoming a complete failure on what you'd suppose was the safest selection.
  2. Growing up, following sports for me sporadically began in 1988-1990. So in 1992 ROY Pat Listach and that winning team, I figured we hit gold with Listach. But then we let Molitor walk, who was my absolute favorite at the time and Listach practically disappeared after that season. Want a more current name since joining this site? Jason Rogers. 1b has been a black hole for Milwaukee post Prince Fielder. I thought he was going to be a young cost controlled contributor in the realms of our own Eric Hosmer type of 1b.
  3. I can agree on this certainly. I don't see a fit with Archer and Milwaukee. Tampa has a quality OF. Santana would be acquiring as a DH bat for them. You can see the need for a 2b or 1b on the team. They do seem to possess some AAA depth to attempt to fill that gap. Knowing how the club is a low salary, I'd expect that route. Archer and how Tampa works likely is a cost of 2 SP prospects, and 1 positional with a top 40 talent being the headliner and with another top 75 also involved. Firepower is something we lack, unless we wanted to part with Keston Hiura.
  4. I'd pause on Duffy due to this: https://www.rotoballer.com/player-news/danny-duffy-has-surgery/417333 Loose bodies in his elbow? A pitcher who's never started more than 26 in a season and paid well now with loose bodies in his elbow? Find it hard to value that. You'd have to have concerns to a future TJ potential which with recovery he's in his 30s making 15+ a year and was down for over 1 season's of games.
  5. Ray=bust Arcia=Brewers Franchise Jeter comp. I couldnt have a more polar opinion on the two. What have Lewis or Benson done? Lewis I dont know, injuries? Benson at 19 completed his year at 10HRs in 58games and under 250PAs. You can translate that out to 30HRs. And thats at 19 premature body. While a .238 avg, he had near .350OB. Thats a darn good looking start for a 2.5mil signing. Id love to be wrong, but at his current rate of advancement, he'll be making ML debut, if at all, when hes 27/28. Even his SB totals were alarming. Something Iactually believe he could produce above average with 30s in a season. But if hhe's going to have that CS rate, OB rate, he'll be a 7/8 in an order and kept quiet on base paths. So now Ill worry if hes even surpassing 20 on a season.
  6. It cannot be the correct call. He pulled the ball back. It's no different than if a guy gave up yardage trying to avoid a tackle by running backwards. He was either down before he stretched or he pulled it back and didn't get the first down. There's absolutely no way that he was whistled down at the exact moment that the ball was fully extended. about 9min mark. He's being tackled stretching out with ball is Forward progress, pulling the ball back doesn't change that. How many times have receivers been in the grasp of a tackle, stretched the ball out and were given that as forward progress? It happens every game. I do know there's that video out of the line marker being moved, but if I recall generally on measurements, the chain link that is on the like the 5yard or even yard interval before the first down marker is held when running to measure, and the extension to ball would be accurate. The refs aren't eyeballing across the field, it's where the chain ends during that measurement. Just uninformed fans.
  7. Sadly, Ray is a bust. Face it. You could have thrown darts at 1st round talents to draft and it'd be a better pick than Ray was. This Season clearly shows again, something I've been chiming for awhile now. Taller players result in higher ceilings. Santana at 6'5" and Judge at 6' 7". Drafting a smaller College athlete in Ray who didn't possess HR power talent nor OB skills was asking for the disaster we are left with. Next two OFs selected were Kyle Lewis at 6-4 and Will Benson a HS at 6-5. Kiriloff and Rutherford are over 6'. Taking Ray was betting on elite defense with the speed and hoping the bat's floor wouldn't get too low where he's a negative WAR player. Ray cost 4.1mil of 4.3mil at the slot the Brewers drafted. That's the problem here. Benson signed for 2.5mil and Rutherford 3.28mil. You put so much money in to a guy that only screams average to slightly above across the tools board, something again I voiced disgust in. You look up and down the minors in the Brewers system and has been mentioned, the super star bat isn't there. Ray's pick could have taken chance on that kind of ceiling over the floor Ray offered. I look forward to when MLB does their pre-rankings and where Ray falls to among Brewer prospects. As said can easily rate 10 higher than him to this point. How blind an eye will they turn on him vs. guys like Harrison&Gatewood? Burnes and Peralta?
  8. I've thought of that for years, literally years. It almost makes too much sense. I'm sure they could but I don't think it's really that simple. First, where do you put it? I guess you'd have to put it on both tips of the ball. Second, They'd also need to be virtually weightless - uneven weight will change he flight of the ball, adding weight makes it harder to throw, etc. Even if they somehow did it, how do you quickly figure out where to spot it? Seems like it would take forever, and still not be very easy...what about plays with second or third efforts in short yardage? I agree that spotting of the ball is awful but I just don't know how they can feasibly do some sort of GPS - but there are certainly people smarter than me, maybe they'll figure something out some day. I also agree that Elliot play is dead wrong. Unless he holds the ball there until the whistle is blown or he's pulled back, he didn't deserve that spot, he pulls it back willingly on his own. That's pretty blatantly giving up the spot in any situation that isn't the goal line. This is extreme but would it really be any differebt than a guy who has the first down but on his own falls backwards (and is then touched) or falls out of bounds?? It's the exact same thing to me, player moves the ball back without force able contact in that direction, they get the worse spot. I am fine with Refs placement for Elliot's Forward progress. He's obviously in the grasps of tacklers and stretching is his forward progress. I wouldn't agree with the placement if he still had his feet under him and backed up(not due to tackling) and then tried to regain more yards. As to the GPS idea, how can that work? If Elliot is say down and stretches the ball any further, how is the GPS knowing at what point he was down? How does the GPS know when the whistle is blown and stopping that play? If it's a receiver who catches a ball falling down, but then gets back up because he wasn't downed by contact. Well, If that GPS ball marks where it feels the players body was down, it's wrong because the play was still ongoing. Really good start to the season, to be 4-1, I feel is ahead of normal and comes with the rash of injuries. Having wins over Seattle and now Dallas are big in the Playoff seeding if it comes to that. Also, Division Lead alone! Detroit final game of season, you wonder, should the division be locked at that point, are you resting Rodgers and others for Playoffs. I know, getting ahead of myself, but they are 12-2 in last 14games with Atlanta being responsible for those 2 losses. Minnesota is a wreck offensively and Detroit gets to deal with a hurt Stafford. Expect to run away with division.
  9. No doubt a Division Title. Somewhere in other threads, it was mentioned on Flags in the Stadium and Wild Cards flags compared to Division title Flags are something more to pride on. Also, you have a Home game at minimum, something that 2 wild cards may not provide if you're the road team both times.
  10. Considering Nelson's injury, I would think he's off the table to be given an extension. Kneble and Arcia are the most likely imo to receive an extension. One to avoid Kneble and arbitration raises. Arcia is a 4WAR or more player in the making. Giving him a long term extension would help establish a new face on a Franchise player. Anderson had a career year, but is turning 30 already with 3? more years of team control. I'd keep him on the year to year raises and trade him as needed when the time approaches. Davies I just don't like his velocity to extend him. There is a long enough team control to see how long he stays effective and not incur that 1-2MPH decrease in velocity which could make him a AAAA pitcher suddenly. Do agree on Hader, Santana, and Shaw having potential extension. The big problem in Santana extension, is the half dozen of OF prospects quickly approaching and all the trade suggestions on him due to his defense. Becomes a pause on extending. I'd let Shaw prove himself 1 more season with the bat, as you also get 1more season on Thames/Aguilar besides the 1b/3b prospects. He is 27 so again the age makes you more on the side of just playing out the team control and get something in return when you would trade him his final offseason of control or that deadline in that season. Hader, let's see if he's a SP or just the RP. Value increases immensely if a starter vs the RP, he'll probably want to bet on that vs talked down as a RP value, where he's behind Kneble on that Closer roll/pay. As to the subject on payroll, Clearly, there's room to add 2 15-23mil/year demand players for 2-3years and not put extension potentials on hold or maxing a pre-payroll on a deadline contract. The easy deal to me is adding Neil Walker. 3years maybe 50million? You'd obviously put Villar on the trade block. Pretty solid 2b that I feel will remain consistent and still have trade value if/when a 2b prospect pushes for the playing time.
  11. Based on history, the Mets would ask for Brinson, Hader, Woodruff, and Villar. Give us back the crying Wilmer Flores with DeGrom.
  12. Only to page 3. If Lance Lynn is a FA w/o the QO attached to him, Id consider a well paid 3yr deal. 42mil-48mil. But I fear being in that range, hes a QO because the Cardibals could use him if he accepted, and afford that easily. Or take on the pick compensation which is higher for them right? Since they're a small market yes? I love Neil Walker if that were to happen/need. Trading Villar certainly if this signing is going to happen. Caught up on thread. Cozart, no. Trading Arcia is a LOUD NO! 1b platoon seems a no-brainer and I dont get the need to move on from both 1b. They are 1st year guys, who, like many, can improve on their 1st year. Santana has his defensive problems, but all Brewer OFs not named Braun, will touch Santanas season numbers. Im looking for a SP to sign, Walker, and a bullpen arm. The rest will happen in trade talks and trades. I dont see the need beyond that, and feel a trade will address somewhere. Broxton/Villar 1 of them paired with 1 of the catchers not named Pina. Your bullpen signing may be a bigger bet. Going out and paying 9-12mil a year to a top guy (not knowing the list) Perez is a trade piece imo too considering Dubon's upper level staus. I believe in Arcia, Santana, Shaw, Pina, Woodruff to help Davies&Anderson. Am comfortable at 1b, Braun, and our CF dilemma. Just that bullpen piece was the difference of a 90win team. Feliz vs the Colorado guy. Schwarzak i didnt get the feeling being a must have resign. He had a share of meltdowns. Another add. QOs. There are types that we are suggesting to target, like Lynn and even Chatwood where they are handed out. If you think Chatwood is a 3/42mil type, why wouldn't the Rockies offer the 18mil to try to get a comp pick? His away splits are arguably good enough to assign a QO expectation. Lynn looking at his numbers, Oh yeah he's getting a QO. And people won't like this, but I'd assume a 5/120mil contract is headed his way. So something that would price us out. Don't like much more on the list who could be realistically had.
  13. Ok bullpen arm Tyler Beede. Just solving the multiple headaches read over and over on Braun/Villar. Get a GG winning 2b who has team control and a bat that wont k 170+ during the season. You can then roll with Santana, Broxton, Phillips, Brinson OF.
  14. Lets send Villar and Braun get Joe Panik to solve 2b. Of cluster. Get some sort of Bullpen prospect or bullpen arm on Giants ML team
  15. Packers have to be one of the most snake bitten when it comes to injuries. Seems a Star player never makes it through game 2 of regular season, or even making it past preseason. Daniels and Bahkteri. Matthews/Nelson. Cobb. Bulaga seems yearly. BJ Raji a few seasons back. It's just crazy how this team goes through 4+major injuries by the time week 5 comes, and other teams will have an OL stay healthy a full season.
  16. I'm only through page one on comments and don't have the time to read through them all. This is my Hader opinion. He will be a Starter for 2018 and with good reason. You need to see how he performs, give him the experience and go from there. He'll obviously have innings restrictions and you figure that at as the season goes on. It may be something like 18-20 starts and at that point you put him back in the pen where you know he'll be exceptional. Ideally, you get him the experience, and trade for bullpen upgrade as Nelson returns to starts about the same time. Villar will have trade value same as Broxton. comments that they won't have any value is obnoxious. I'd certainly part with at least one of the two. 1b is reasonable to try trading one of Thames or Aguilar away. both are clearly better than Jason Rogers, and that was fortunate enough to acquire Broxton. Maybe you move on from Perez, and keep Villar as your Infield utility. With Phillips/Brinson it's time to move on from the OF utility uses that he, Thames seen.
  17. Well, I would say the opposite has happened. I will be blunt in my opinion here, but I do have a right to this opinion: Braun is overrated. Really overrated. He's wrapping up a season hitting under .270, mediocre power with 17 HR, and a 1.5 fWAR, half a win less than Manny Pina. Yet we act like he is still one of the best in the game. C'mon now. He's ok. He has enough decent stretches where his contract shouldn't be a disaster. But you stack him up against the best hitters in the game, Altuve, Blackmon, Trout, etc. etc, no, he can't hold their respective jocks. Not anymore. The idea I proposed, is excepting Braun isnt a power hitter. 30s wont be happening. But he still comes with an above league avg OB...on a down year. Something that is questionable for Brinson and Phillips to even reach. You want to play those guys for their youth, defense, and upside but, where in the order? 1-3 isnt happening and if it does its by ignoring the BA and OB. Santana has cleared himself as a premium bat that is wrong to seat 5th in the order all to often. He gets on base at a nice clip, which Shaw's bat suits perfectly to bat behind. Hate on Braun all you want, hes going to continue playing next season. Where are you batting him? No worse than 5th guaranteed. If the LHP #s stick, doesnt that seem to fit perfectly to play Braun all games vs a lefty and Phillips on the bench? There are numerous moves Stearns can make this offseason. Yes 19million is the commitment to him next season, but its not paid in that way. With the bonus and deferrals. A down year after a good year and now he's only going to produce to the down numbers? How'd that work for McCutchen? A down year thats still above ML avg. His contract and overall ability is not impeding the team. Stearns can still make acquisitions that help the team in areas where they need. Brauns OF position is not one of them.
  18. Noted above on the 0-4s. It is just bone crushing to the three losses in row all winnable games to Pitts twice and then the Cubs. Followed by the blown loss to the Cardinals Saturday. Epic, late inning failures. Just remarkable how bad the Brewers bats are in 6th inning and later at not scoring runs. Leaving 10+! Runners on base and follow that with bullpen blowing so many of the games.
  19. Counsell ruined this series by pitching Schwarzak and Kneble Wed. leaving them unavailable for Thursday. Hader should have finished out that inning. And even been there for the 9th. Counsell with all these moves, and then being tied when 9th and extras come to have Bandy/Susac be your best bats for the 10th inning. A loss to the Pirates was only a 1game swing with the Cubs. a loss to the Cubs when ahead is a 2game swing, maybe even 2.5 technically because of w/l tiebreaker. Needed to be focused on the Cubs series in your managing over the Pirates on the road.
  20. Wonder how this would have turned out if Schwarzak and Kneble were available tonight...you know in a more important game
  21. Yes, I love to see Arrieta on deck coming off an injury. And I'd assume, the Cubs throw Lester at us on short rest if it comes down to not being swept. 81wins and still 11games to go. All those bullpen losses to start the season, this is a Playoff team as constructed, versus those 2months+. In a rebuild year.
  22. I believe both Santana and Braun's bats are special. At a point I'd have Braun bat 2nd, and Santana bat 3rd. Walker can bat 1st and Shaw 4th. You need to bat your special hitters more often than keeping Santana down in 5th. Santana sees his share of pitches. It's time to recognize his batting accomplishments and leave Braun at #2 to solidify that batter in the lineup. Seems so simple and yet Counsell can't put his best lineups atop the order. Harper/Altuve aren't special...They are elite bats, something Braun has fallen off in being called, but I believe he'll find a year that he performs elite before he hangs it up....A year he gets to DH and be healthy? Someone posted about BABIP how the numbers were different...well a HR isn't a ball in play. That's why Matt Olson has a .298 avg in last 28days while just a .200BABIP. Or even better a .227 avg in last 7days with a .000 BABIP So in a year that Braun's HRs are down, that BABIP being lower is affecting his slash lines more than normal. I'd think it evens out for him in the next 450PAs, like the single hit last night off the edge of the mound and still passed the 2b. The luck earlier this year was the pitcher snaring that or the 2b gloving it and throwing him out. All I know is September is a good month for Braun, and we are getting to see him lock in when the games matter the most!
  23. Theres just better options than him at the moment. Walker is a big veteran addition at the position Villar happened to play, moving him to a backup role. As to 1st base move with Walker, Id rather have Jesus or Thames in the lineup at 1b. This wouldnt have been an issue had Villar batted well this season. He hasnt been consistent to rally on, and Walker will be.
  24. I'd still give Broxton a chance unless a top 70 type prospect was offered up in trade at a position of need or want. Remember, he has such a poor contact rate when swinging at pitches in the zone. Maybe it's an eye repair thing like with Gatewood last off-season. Broxton's numbers wouldn't need to improve much with his batting exit velocity to make them elite at CF. Drop his bad percentages by just 10% where does he go on the numbers? He's the perfect candidate to see traded away for near top 100 prospect and become elite after doing so. He's someone with a small bump in stats can be 30/40 as a hitter who's in his prime years under control for all of them. I just don't believe Brinson or Phillips has any higher ceiling than Broxton. What may be a higher BA/OB comes with a lower Slg. The Defense between the 3 I'd give Phillips the better ranking, but Broxton/Brinson are awash with Broxton being more likely overall better. Problem is Phillips bat profile, isn't looking any different than Keon's. Just a little tweak/improvement away from being a 5WAR type CF. The Mets would certainly have a use for him in CF. The Dodgers could use Broxton at CF, so in no way do I see him as just a 2nd tier team's type.
