  1. For a supposed mediocre loogy, Claudio just pitched a couple clean high leverage innings with ease.
  2. Let's go out there & get this win for Donnie in his Brewer debut. Give him a real proper Wisconsin welcome.
  3. We were leading following Yelich's home run. Failure to pour it on dooming us once again.
  4. I've been a Brewer fan for 33 years, if I didn't have hope I wouldn't be here.
  5. Yasmani framing the borderline strike 2 perfectly & stealing strike 3 off the plate.
  6. So far it has only been one move between MLB & AAA. Hopefully with some successful tweaking in AAA (much easier done there than with a contending MLB club) this will be the only such move.
  7. Eight of the last nine years Gio made 31+ starts & threw 170+ innings. The other year (2014) he was at 27 GS/158 IP. Over that nine year stretch he made the 5th most starts & threw the 11th most innings in all of MLB. Coming into his age 33 season with that kind of durability & a league avearge-ish ERA would have probably gotten him something like 3/30 just to eat innings "back in the old days". Now he's gotta take a minor league deal, slum it in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for a couple two tree starts & hope he can opt out into an MLB gig somewhere. I'd fire my agent too.
  8. There are 26 SS with at least 2,000 innings from 2016-2018. Among those 26 Arcia ranks 9th in DRS (+9) & 19th in UZR (-5.3), so the metrics are mixed. From the eye test I tend to side more with DRS than UZR in this case, but even then he is a loooong way from someone like Andrelton (+71) or even the next tier of guys like Crawford (+35), Lindor (+36) or even someone like Nick Ahmed (+37).
  9. Saw that too. Was trying to figure out if Stearns got the tickets & was like "I know who I'll ask to come with, Jhoulys Chacin." Or maybe vice versa? Or maybe they got tickets independent of each other, one got there, then the other sat down & was like "Oh, hey, what's up?"
  10. Bases loaded, bottom of the 9th, two outs, full count, Mets down one run, Keon Broxton at the plate, 94 MPH right down the middle... ...swing & miss.
  11. 2018: 58.7% 4 seam 34.2% slider 6.8% curve 0.2% sinker 0.2% change up 2019: 56.9% 4 seam 23.0% slider 9.9% sinker 5.5% curve 4.7% change up
  12. Looking more & more like the reason Burnes wasn't starting last year was because his curve/change are not as developed as his fastball/slider.
  13. Was Jeffress more or less of a disaster today than Shaw was at 2B last year? That's the point, you don't know. Shaw will make Rickie Weeks look like Roberto Alomar. This will be a disaster. However, I'm coming around to the idea that Stearns will be trading Shaw so I'll settle down for now.
  14. Actually, the DH can be used for any position. So... DH for Arcia? Maybe in little league or high school, but not in the bigs.
  15. Would be really nice if we could take advantage of the Cardinals inability to pour it on up to this point.
  16. Is the current Chris Hook different than the Chris Hook that worked with these guys for years in the minors, where they saw large degrees of success? Hook isn't the reason Burnes and Peralta are missing their spots. I don't know, but Derek Johnson sure seems like he is doing well in Cincy - and they never have good pitching. MKE 9.68 K9 3.76 BB9 1.88 HR9 5.30 ERA 5.07 FIP 4.26 xFIP CIN 9.30 K9 4.07 BB9 0.84 HR9 3.49 ERA 3.77 FIP 4.17 xFIP We are striking out more hitters & walking less than the Reds to this point in the season. The only edge they have is their HR rate is fluky low & ours is fluky high, which is why the xFIPs (which normalizes HR rate) are pretty much even. I'll predict our ERA is lower than 5.30 & the Reds is higher than 3.49 when the season is over.
  17. I posted a version of this in a game thread earlier this year, tl/dr version = Arcia is young & has seen wild variance in his performance & it's probably still too early to say definitively that the hitter he has been in aggregate for his career is the hitter he will be moving forward... 2016: Arcia "called up to soon" at 21. Hits 219/273/358 over 216 PA for a 66 OPS+. 2017: Full time starter at SS hits 277/324/407 for an 89 OPS+. League average for SS was 264/319/419. Best month was June at 326/370/478 in 100 PA. 2018: Terrible over first 212 PAs at 197/231/251. Demoted. Hits 290/320/386 in 154 PA upon his return then 333/353/606 in 34 postseason PAs. So yes, in aggregate, he's been bad for his career & hasn't looked all that much better to start the season & has often looked completely lost, but there have also been stretches of varying lengths where he has performed adequately or even better & shown flashes of the tools he posseses that just need to be unlocked more consistently. 2019 forward: I'd say there's about a 55% percent chance he hits below league average for a SS, 30% chance he hits between league average for a SS & a 100-110 OPS+ which leaves about a 15% chance he hits for above a 110 OPS+...which would be pretty cool.
  18. No, there's a FAR greater difference between the first four(3 especially IMO) and Claudio, and I don't care what a small sample size for a left-handed specialist says. The other 4 pitchers are elite power arms who can get out both lefties and rights and can break a thin pane of glass with a baseball, not to mention almost all of Claudio's WAR comes from two years ago when he had a fluke year and put up a 2.8 WAR season. This also includes a year in which he posted a whip over 1.5. It's not close at all regardless of what one stat driven primarily by one year says. Also, when in tough spots, I'll take the guys who strike out 3 times as many people as Claudio does. I used 2017-18 because that’s how long Hader has been in the league. If you go back to Claudio’s first season in 2016 he has pitched 197 innings (22nd among all relievers) in 173 games, so he is not a lefty specialist. He also ranks 20th in Win Probability Added & 26th in Runs Allowed WAR over that time frame. So over a three year sample (aka not small) he has been a top 25ish reliever in all of baseball. I never said he was on the same level as the other guys, just closer than many probably think. If I need to get outs in 2019 I’ll take Claudio over Jeffress, Kimbrel & Knebel at the present moment.
  19. The Cubs paid even more money to acquire Darvish than Kimbrel will receive, how did it impact their ability to win it all? How did having Yu's dead money (or Hayward's? or Chatwood's?) on the books impact their ability to spend this offseason? Spending money on Kimbrel doesn't guarantee we will get the desired result & if he gets hurt (declining velocity/results as last year went on & lots of IP over the years are red flags) it could hamstring us in the future.
  20. But Rock said our bull pen has fared well so far this season... The Brewers bullpen has the fourth highest Win Probability Added in all of MLB so far, so they have fared pretty well. At least in terms of adding to our probability of winning anyway.
  21. Runs Allowed WAR (rank) Win Probability Added (rank) among relievers 2017-18 Kimbrel 5.7 (2nd) 8.13 (1st) Knebel 4.6 (4th) 5.50 (5th) Hader 4.5 (5th) 4.73 (8th) Jeffress 4.4 (9th) 4.14 (13th) Claudio 3.2 (20th) 4.09 (14th) Closer than many probably think.
