  1. StearnsFTW for the win. Though Intense Porpoises are one of the most underrated metal bands of all time in my humble estimation.
  2. Clearly. If Farhan Zaidi's first big deal as POBO is to trade a franchise icon & the team's best reliever for a pitcher that couldn't crack our postseason roster & three non-prospects he would be exiled to Alcatraz.
  3. After throwing 31.7% sliders as a rookie in 2013, his slider % declined every year from 12.3 in 2014 to 7.1 in 2017. In 2018 his slider % jumped back up to 25.8. He talks about it a little bit here... https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/david-cone-j-a-happ-and-jake-petricka-on-developing-their-sliders/
  4. It's very possible Bumgarner will be better than Woodruff in 2019. It's very unlikely Bumgarner will provide more value in 2019 than Woodruff does from 2019-2024. & it's not just an injury plagued down year...it's two injury plagued down years, a decline in velocity & moving from one of the best pitcher's parks to one of the worst.
  5. Madison is actually in the final year of an extension he signed, which contains limited no trade protection. According to Cots he can block trade to eight clubs.
  6. Except Bluemound itself... Bluemound is Highway 18. It literally runs through the entire state. So...not a backstreet.
  7. As flawed as any metric may be, they are still far superior to the eye test. Last year there were 43,489 innings of CF played, how many did you personally observe? When Lagares was a regular CF from 2013-15 before injuries hit he registered a +54 DRS (1st), +25.7 UZR (2nd) & +13.4 UZR/150 (1st) in 2,673 innings (12th). From his debut in 2013 until now he is 3rd in DRS (+92), 5th in UZR (+38.2) & 3rd in UZR/150 (+14.3) over that time frame despite being only 19th in innings (3,784). Since you brought up Cain, since 2013 he ranks 2nd in DRS (+82), 4th in UZR (+45.4) & 7th in UZR/150 (+10.5) in 5,727 innings (5th).
  8. Lagares 2016-18 | 85 wRC+ | +28 DRS | +12.5 UZR | +16.3 UZR/150 Broxton 2016-18 | 93 wRC+ | +13 DRS | +5.3 UZR | +4.5 UZR/150 This is almost a perfect example for how fans over value their own players. You have two guys who for all intense porpoises are about equal as players yet Mets fans think Lagares is clearly better while Brewers fans think the same about Broxton. The only real edge Keon has is he has been healthier.
  9. There are so many inductees in clear violation of the integrity, sportsmanship & character clauses that it seems silly to me to start enforcing it now. What did more damage to the game? Bonds doing steroids or guys like Cap Anson & Kenesaw Mountain Landis doing everything in their power to deny 100s of deserving players an opportunity to play because of the pigmentation of their skin?
  10. The only issue with Andujar, besides acquisition cost, is he probably isn't a 3B. He registered -25 DRS/-16 UZR last year. Those are the 3rd/2nd worst marks out of 224 qualifying 3B seasons since Braun put up -32 DRS/-25 UZR in 2007.
  11. Corey Ray is more than I'd want to give up for MadBum, but it could be a start. I'd probably do Ray plus a couple 40 FV guys for MadBum/Fresh Prince.
  12. Just because "chemistry" can't be quantified, doesn't mean it isn't an actual thing which affects a team over the course of 162 games. By all accounts we had a loose, easy going club last year. It was obvious watching & players mentioned it numerous times throughout the year. If Dozier is a threat to disrupt that, why risk it when he doesn't offer anything special on the field? It almost makes me wish we had 300 million to sign Machado just to watch heads explode around here. Who knows, maybe Stearns saw The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh on MeTV one night & the secret to our success is astrologically compatible players?
  13. I didn't say he was average, just closer to average than elite. His DRS (+13, leader +61), UZR (+5.3, leader +30) & UZR/150 (+4.5, leader +15.4) ranks the last three seasons are all middle of the pack among CF & closer to zero/average than the top of the board. Statcast is the most favorable on Keon's defense & they've got him at 26 Outs Above Average the last three years compared to 66 OAA for Inciarte, again closer to zero/average than elite.
  14. Players on the 40 man have to be optioned to the minor leagues. Since Dubon was added to the 40 man after the 2017 season his first option was used when he was sent to Colo Springs to open the 2018 season.
  15. Sadly no. That’s not so much a ding on Taylor but Broxton is pretty elite. Not many OFs in the game that have the range, speed, jumps he has. His 1.6 WAR essentially all from defense shows that. Taylor is solid though, he has always been considered a good OF. Sure, Keon was elite in 2018, but 194 innings is an extremely small, noisy sample. There are 29 CF with at least 1,500 innings over the last three seasons. Of that sample Keon ranks 13th in DRS (+13), 13th in UZR (+5.3) & 14th in UZR/150 (+4.5). The larger sample shows he's much closer to an average CF than an elite one.
  16. Last year Hernan, Domingo, Thames, Keon, Granderson & Maverick combined for 565 plate appearances as outfielders & hit 231/304/402 (about an 85 wRC+). Last year Ben Gamel hit 272/358/370 (108 wRC+). I think we already have a 4th OF who can actually produce some offense.
  17. Bud Selig presided over the "Steroid Era" & he got a plaque. Hall of Fame managers like Torre & LaRussa benefitted from juiced players & played dumb about it. There are a number of players already enshrined who used illegal drugs to enhance their performance. Worst of all there are also HOFers who propagated the "Gentleman's Agreement". If I were a BBWAA member with an HOF vote, all of the above would lead me to the conclusion it is unreasonable to withhold a vote for Bonds or Clemens.
  18. Broxton 2016-18 | 796 PAs | 93 wRC+ | 3.5 fWAR | 4.2 bWAR Santana 2016-18 | 1123 PAs | 117 wRC+ | 4.3 fWAR | 3.7 bWAR Domingo & Keon are pretty good examples to illustrate what WAR is trying to accomplish. Santana is clearly the better hitter, while Keon is clearly the superior fielder. Who is provides more value pretty much comes down to if you believe Keon has saved about 15 runs on defense (DRS used in bWAR) or 7.5 runs on defense (UZR used in fWAR). If Keon did indeed have more suitors than Domingo that would seem to be yet another data point confirming that there just isn't much of a market for players with limited defensive ability.
  19. Here's a couple lefty relievers & select 2017-18 stats... 72.8 GB% 7.27 K/9 4.50 BB/9 0.46 HR/9 3.00 ERA (69 ERA-) 3.83 FIP (86 FIP-) 64.2 GB% 5.86 K/9 1.73 BB/9 0.43 HR/9 3.33 ERA (72 ERA-) 3.16 FIP (71 FIP-) One got 40 million bucks, one was acquired for the 39th pick in the upcoming draft.
  20. I guess the poster that assured us Broxton would make the 25 out of spring was correct...just for the Mets. I figured teams would wait us out on both Domingo/Keon & try to pick them up for just a waiver fee out of spring training. That Stearns was able to deal both for interesting returns are two more checks for me under the "Maybe This Guy Knows What He's Doing" column.
  21. The walk from the stadium to Bluemound goes through the parking lot & then through Mitchell Boulevard Park. No backstreets involved.
  22. Bonds, Clemens, Edgar, Halladay, Manny, Mariano, Mussina, Schilling, Walker & Wagner get my ten imaginary votes.
  23. Thames only played OF for 259 innings last year & registered a +1 rating from both DRS & UZR, for whatever that is or isn't worth. A total nightmare (among OFs with similarly limited playing time) would have been someone like Charlie Tilson (-9 DRS/-3.4 UZR in 287 innings), Billy McKinney (-4 DRS/-3.5 UZR in 270 innings), Preston Tucker (-5 DRS/-3.2 UZR in 270 innings) or Chris Young (-6 DRS/-4.3 UZR in 294 innings). Maybe it is just small sample noise or maybe the Brewers are really onto something with regards to OF positioning, but the only players to record a negative DRS or UZR in the Brewers OF this season were Sogard/Orf & they both only played 2 innings out there. The other nine players that saw time in the OF were all positive in both DRS & UZR.
  24. Howell didn't get out of Arizona last year, so I'd imagine he will be starting in Colo Springs with Turang in Appleton.
  25. Over the last three seasons Realmuto has been a Posey level hitter... Buster Posey 2016-18 | 298/374/429 (116 w RC+) JT Realmuto 2016-18 | 286/338/454 (115 wRC+) 2016: BP (114 wRC+) JT (111 wRC+) 2017: BP (126 wRC+) JT (107 wRC+) 2018: BP (106 wRC+) JT (126 wRC+) Sure, JT isn't prime level Buster (141 wRC+ from 2010-15), but if you get him out of Marlins Park (89 wRC+ at home vs. 137 wRC+ on the road over the last three years) it's possible he gets a significant boost.
