  1. I spent like two hours reading around on chrisoleary.com last night and he has some really accessible, easy to digest information pertaining to pitching mechanics. Definitely recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the topic.
  2. A middling outfield prospect who had a higher OPS than Lawrie last year in the Midwest league. Parra would not have gotten it done either as Jack Z specifically targeted League as a "proven" reliever. He wasn't interested in trading one possible starting pitcher who hadn't fulfilled his upside yet for another one who throws with the other arm, is older and has less of a pedigree. My guess is something like Coffey/Gamel would have been the minimum needed to get a deal done.
  3. As far as defense goes here are Gomez and Gwynn career in CF. Innings | UZR | OOZ | ARM 2660 | 28.4 | 202 | -1.4 1810 | 19.2 | 123 | -5.0 It looks like UZR has them right around equal, with Gomez making Out of Zone plays at a slightly higher rate and with a better arm. That seems pretty accurate with the ever popular eye test. TZL had a clear edge for Gomez, but that's only up through 2009 as I don't believe 2010 numbers will be available until after the season. I guess I'd rather have Gomez in the field, Gwynn at the plate and neither as anything more than a 25th man.
  4. NL | ATL, CIN, SD, SF AL | TB, CHI, TEX, NYY WS | TB over ATL Might as well let Bobby lose one more in his last hurrah. After TB I'd like to see TEX or CHI win it all. All the NL teams kinda bore me this year, honestly. I hope PHI doesn't even make the tourney just because trading Lee to start the year was so dumb.
  5. It just seems to me that if they couldn't find a place recently even at the end of the 25 man for guys like the Hurricane (same primary position but better offenseive line) or Heether/Rottino (more positional versatility/better power), that Farris has long odds to overcome to be viewed as a possible utility guy. He seems to almost toe the line between organizational soldier/AAAA guy.
  6. I definitely have a soft spot for Zelous. Between the name and the build how can you not pull for this guy. He has the same career OPS as Schafer. Who's who? 350/420 | 369/401?
  7. Why not throw 250K his way just in case? It seems like the potential reward far outweighs the risk, especially when you consider how many million we're eating this year on the likes of Hall and Suppan.
  8. I threw Span in there figuring his contract/production is somewhat in line with Gutierrez and Zobrist. As Sizemore, Granderson, Kemp and Adam Jones have shown though relying on great defensive/slightly above average offensive outfielders can be a risky approach on a year to year basis.
  9. Years and $$$ are 2011 onward assuming options are exercised LONGO 6/42.5 UPTON 5/49.5 PEDROIA 5/44.5 BRAUN 5/40.5 ZOBRIST 5/29 SPAN 5/24.5 ZIMMY 4/43 TULO 4/39 GUTIERREZ 4/24 McCANN 3/27 KINSLER 3/23 VOTTO ARBY SOO CHOO ARBY Depending on how much weight you put into the various factors I'd imagine the 5 are somewhere on the above list...
  10. It's far too early to say obviously but even if that is the case, so what? Heckathorn is looking great so any potential damage is mitigated. In 2001 20 pitchers were drafted in the first round, almost ten years later 11 of them have thrown so much as one big league pitch. That should give you a pretty good idea of the odds you're dealing with when you draft pitching in the first round. Gruler and Everts were drafted 3rd and 5th in 2002. WHO? Sleeth, 3rd in 2003. WHO? Townsend was drafted 8th back to back years, 2004 and 2005. A top 10 pick twice! WHO? Moskos 4th overall in 2007. WHO? Point being pitchers bust all the time for a variety of reasons, even ones drafted far higher than Arnett. If he is a bust, that's the chance you take. There's still plenty of time to prove otherwise, however.
  11. Dangerous to a buffet line or a catcher about to get steamrolled. These guys aren't athletes...they're baseball players. On topic, I'm ok with Casey. For his cost he brings decent offense and poor defense to the hot corner which is fine by me. At the same time after Fielder he is probably our best chip so if we could get a quality arm for him i'd pull the trigger in a second and then you can fill RF/3B/1B with Hart/Gamel/FA. That also gives you some flexibility positionally on who you can sign.
  12. Hoping to get the 90s logo plate with either MR2999 or RIPBMAC.
  13. The bad luck I was referring to was the choice we all made at some point to become Brewer Fans.
  14. This bad luck is bound to even out at some point later in the season, right?
  15. 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5K, 99 pitches Looks like a great line for a still young pitcher coming back from injury pitching for a team that has nothing to really play for at this point except health moving forward. MIGHT AS WELL TRY AND SQUEEZE ONE MORE INNING OUT
  16. I agree with you completely MJ. I really like WAR and what it tries to accomplish, but valuing offense and defense equally is a huge flaw in the calculation. As you pointed out, the opportunities just are not equal, nor should they be weighted as such. Whenever I check a players WAR i always adjust a little based on how much is derived from their offensive/defensive value. My favorite example is Braun/Nyjer Morgan last year. Hilarious.
  17. In terms of our chances with Cliff Lee, I like to think of it in similar terms as the 1 in a million scene in Dumb and Dumber. "So what you're saying is...I GOT A CHANCE!" But the Brewers definitely have the money to go out and make a big offer, especially if Prince is traded. I'm guessing Lee will be looking at offers between the money/years that Lackey got this year and CC got two years ago. I'd maybe try and get creative and offer him 4/100 or 3/85. Shorter years at a higher salary so he can hit FA again sooner. You increase your short term risk, but limit the long term risk and maintain a higher degree of flexibility moving forward.
  18. I really hope they leave Rickie in the leadoff spot, even if Fielder is traded in the offseason. He's consistently our best OBP guy and there is also no harm in letting one of your best hitters get the most PAs over the course of the season. Maybe something like this for 2011... 2B Weeks CF Cain LF Braun RF Hart 1B Gamel 3B McGehee C Lucroy SS Escobar
  19. Something like this... C (2) Lucroy, Kottaras Pretty easy here. Two cheap, productive in house options. IF (4) Gamel, Weeks, McGehee, Escobar Fielder is traded for a young pitcher who can slot into the rotation hopefully sooner than later. I have a feeling that in the interest of not moving people all over the diamond the club will leave McGehee and Hart where they are at and slide Gamel in at first base. OF (3) Braun, Cain, Hart Center is the only real question here and I really hope they just give Cain the job outright. Bench (4 I HOPE) ???? Dickerson and Inglett are probably both in here for sure. Maybes include guys like Gomez and Cruz. They'll definitely need a utility guy and someone with a little pop. Rotation (5) Lee, Yo, Wolf, Fielder Return, Parra Yo and Wolf are the only real for sures here. Cots has our commitments for next year at 32 million. Even with arby raises, a payroll drop and hopeful Weeks extension we will have money to spend. I'd go hard after Cliff. Signing Lee would also offset the bad PR of a Fielder trade to some extent. I understand it is next to impossible, but this is the internet. As for Parra I think he is a perfect 5th starter because if he pitches to his potential you have a solid #3 and if he pitches to his recent results you have a competent albeit frustrating #5. Bullpen (7) Axford, Braddock, Hawkins, Coffey, Loe, ??? Again there is a lot of fungibility for the back end. I think Narvy would be a fine long man/emergency PH. Jeffress could be up sooner than later. Melvin is the GM so he'll probably throw money at some old guy too.
  20. Definitely good to hear it is just a blister issue with Mark, with him already tossing 35.1 more innings than last year it'd be nice if they were cautious with him from here on it anyhow.
  21. Trying to figure this out from the Phils perspective...so you trade Cliff Lee for a middling return to turn around and midseason acquire an inferior pitcher who is owed more money over a longer period of time??? Amaro is trying to edge his way in on the Minaya/Moore battle, methinks.
  22. Maybe the world was handed to him on a silver platter, but when he went to go and eat off of that platter he and his mom were locked out of the house and once they did get inside half the food on the platter was already gone.
  23. I was also at the game and looking for information on the fan who was struck and the best I could find was a comment on the Appleton Post Crescent game story that said she had a concussion and 20 stitches, definitely looked and sounded like it could have been much worse.
  24. Infante made the team specifically as a utility player, so he didn't really make it "over" Weeks. I know many on here would like to try Rickie at CF, RF and 3b from various posts over the years so maybe someday he'll be eligible for the role. Also with Hart in the derby many will blame his participation for a lack of 2nd half HRs should that come to pass. Of his current 20 HRs, 15 came in 119 AB during a five week stretch from 0515 to 0619. He hit 3 before the stretch and 2 since for a total of 5 in 172 AB. Stretch: 7.9AB/HR Rest of year: 34.4AB/HR So because Hart was only hitting HRs for a five week stretch in May/June the derby ruined his swing?
  25. Ray Durham | Age 21 | Birmingham | 271/338/367 Brett Lawrie | Age 20 | Huntsville | 295/359/473 Chew on those numbers Szymborski.
