  1. I don’t think Thames will last the season with the Brewers unless Aguilar gets hurt or goes in the tank.
  2. Ever since the Brewers went 13-0 in 1987 I have kept an eye on whether anyone would challenge that record. In most seasons nobody wins more than 4 or 5 straight to start the season, and with the Phillies loss to the Nats today after 4 wins the record won’t be challenged this year either.
  3. That’s what makes Arica frustrating. He has shown that he can be a decent hitter when he is willing to hit the ball up the middle and to the opposite field. And he has done it for extended periods. But then he reverts to the swing where his feet are moving all over the place and he tries to pull everything. I don’t expect him to be a great hitter. But he is capable of hitting close to .250 with some power, which is more than acceptable for a good fielding SS hitting 8th.
  4. Recognizing that it’s only 5 games, and he has only played in 4, my biggest disappointment from these games has been seeing Arica revert to his undisciplined form at the plate. If he could just produce like he did for much of 2017 and late and in the playoffs last year, he would be a very solid number 8 hitter in a lineup with a strong 1-7. But I cringe when I see him striking out on 3 pitches waving at balls 2 feet off the plate. When he just stays patient and commits to hitting the ball up the middle and to right center, he has shown that he can be a productive hitter. I’m also watching for signs that Aguilar can be more like the first half of 2018 version than the second half version. He hasn’t really driven the ball in the early games; maybe yesterday’s 2 run single will help him break the ice. I also wonder how productive Thames can be as a pinch hitter and occasional starter. He may not make it through the season.
  5. The bullpen that was a Brewers strength last year could be their Achilles Heel this season. And it isn’t like they have dominant starters either.
  6. I’ve followed the Brewers ever since I took a day off of my senior year in high school to see their first Opening Day in 1970. So, I’ve seen the ups and downs in fan interest. While there are obviously going to be spikes when the team has its best seasons, IMHO the general level of interest in the Brewers has been much higher since 2007 than it was in the 1990’s. The opening of Miller Park (which allows fans to plan trips to the ball park without worrying about sitting in uncomfortable weather, rain delays, or postponements), the excitement generated by the Fielder, Braun, Weeks, etc teams, and the new ownership and its commitment to fielding competitive teams has brought interest to new levels that can sustain at least a few bad seasons. A season like this with some new “face of the franchise” players is going to keep that interest up for at least another few years. Good times.
  7. I think Uecker was part of the ABC broadcast team that covered the series.
  8. This is exactly what I would do. The way the Brewers use starters I don’t think they need more than 3 to cover 5 games in 7 days. I would look at it as 6 starters/long relievers (who have all been starters at some point this year) and 5 late inning relievers. Cover the first 3 games and then see where you are for game 4. If they wear out all 6 of the first group in the first 3 games they’re probably in big trouble already. I like the idea of having someone like Broxton to be a possible late inning pinch runner and defensive replacement.
  9. I’m bummed that the Thursday game is so early. I bought tickets for the first NLDS game at MP when I assumed, like everyone else did, that the Brewers only path to the game would be winning the wild card game and facing the Cubs. So I thought I was getting tickets for game 3 on Sunday. Because my two daughters who live in town are schoolteachers they won’t be able to go to a game at 3 PM and they were really looking forward to going to a playoff game.
  10. I did not search for best available because I was pretty set on paying no more than terrace box. But, the seats I was able to get were pretty good (low rows in sections not far from home plate) so the impression I got was that there were plenty available. I only bought for the WC game and NLDS game 1.
  11. I think it's fairly cut & dry. Imagine instead that the whole situation played out like this. Peralta is at the plate instead of Lorenzen. The exact same thing happens, only Bill correctly interprets the rule & goes on & on about how we caught a break since Peralta was trying to get out of the way & its then just a foul ball. Peralta homers on the next pitch. No one here would be saying the rule was incorrectly applied & we'd all be laughing at the Reds fans (if there are any left) trying to apply their own interpretation of what a bunt attempt should or shouldn't be. Truer words were never spoken.
  12. Here’s my question. If Lorenzen had done exactly what he did but the ball didn’t hit the bat, but drilled him in the face, do you think he should have been called out because he intended to bunt at the ball and missed for strike 3? I’m in that apparent minority that thinks that was the right call. At the very least, I think there is a real judgment call about whether Lorenzen was attempting to bunt or, to,use the term a lot of people are using, “offered at the pitch”.
  13. Schoop is just killing the team. It’s looking like he isnt going to earn regular enough playing time to break out of it this season.
  14. I guess we saw what the Reds would have done if Braun hadn’t made his baserunning mistake in the second.
  15. I remember early last year being impressed with Shaw because he hit to all fields and got a lot of singles and doubles going the other way. He never does that any more and that last AB, rolling over on a low outside pitch is a perfect example. Too bad the Brewers don’t have a hitting coach that could help hitters go back to what worked for them before.
  16. Would have been nice to have Braun on second for Pina’s hit, though they might have pitched around Pina with a runner on second and Peralta on deck.
  17. Couldn't watch last night but didn't Thames have an error that cost them runs? I don't know how egregious it was but someone feel free to describe it. It was on a single to right field with runners on first and second. The runner on second (the Reds pitcher) was going to stop at third but when Thames dropped the ball he came around to score and the other runner went to third where he scored on a sac fly. The next batter was retired (on a sliding catch by Cain on a sinking liner) so Thames boot cost a run.
  18. Better win this one because there will be no Hader or Jeffress tomorrow.
  19. The Cubs scored exactly ONE run in each of their four games against the Pirates and managed to win 2. For the entire series, the Bucs outscored the Cubs 5-4.
  20. The Reds are warming up for their trip to Milwaukee by finishing up a sweep over the Giants, including 7 runs yesterday and 9 into the 7th inning today.
