What sense would it make to trade one of our best prospect pitchers to rid us of Braun to free up playing time for our outfielders but yet obtain Puig, another outfielder? Just doesn’t add up. Oh and Braun isn’t going anywhere. I don't know, there is one team he will go to and they have Joc/Taylor and an expiring Puig in the outfield. If you have a better idea please elaborate because i'm only pondering a better way to keep Santana here for 5 years other than repeat the same talking points over and over again. This Braun 1B talk is folly IMO unless I actually see him taking throws on the 1st base bag.

I half feel like Braun might be on the chopping block. Other than his salary he seems to be the path of least resistance remaining in this OF puzzle. Get rid of him eating some salary and we have Yelich/Cain/Santana (and Phillips to defense sub for Santana) for the next 5 years without breaking up the Thames/Aguilar platoon. How you get him out of here with the no trade protection? I have no idea...offer Burnes/Braun to the Dodgers for Puig+ or something? It just seems like the path of least resistance to me.

These GM's aren't that shallow. It's good business practice for the future when you are fair to one another, Stearns knows his price and so do everyone else. If there is good value to be extracted it will be gotten.

I'm really warming to the Clevinger idea from Cleveland...forgot all about him. Hopefully they go that route with his massive control.

I know Stearns has our attention priority 1 right now but saw a rumor the Bucks are after Deandre again. Parker/Brogdon/Vaughn was the return that I saw. Not sure how I feel about that, not great unless Jordan is agreeing to an extension. We'd literally have no bench, just empty chairs.

There's always ways to go about trying to get surplus value but, in the grand scheme of things, let's say Salazar and Archer AREN'T available. We're not going to sit on Domingo with the opportunity to land Duffy. Not at his cost per production. I could be wrong, but I would guess stearns doesn't execute that Cain deal immediately unless there is a big fish that he already knows he's getting for Santana. Only one way to find out though.....

What is wrong with Duffy's contract? Way too much money. Can sign a FA for that and keep Santana.

Per the Domingo thread MLB radio says we're pushing hard for Archer. I think this is move C, his contract lines up a little better than Salazar's does with the Cain/Yelich deals.

I'm not even going to know what new jersey to buy! This is plan C move IMO, Archer's contract lines up with Cain and Yelich's deals better than Salazar.

Stearns is taking advantage of the inefficiency in the market (less players in FA due to them saving for next year) and selling high on prospects (highly sought after commodities). In a couple three years we'll have a new crop of hopefully good prospects ready to go. In my opinion anyway.

Santana is a big-power, high-strikeout, subpar defense RF. That's not what SF needs. Brett Phillips plays center, but the Giants appear to like Steven Duggar. Castro's owed just under $23M over the next two years. For a 1-2 WAR, maybe even 3, 28 year old that's almost chump change in todays' game. And it's only for 2 years. Look at it as Yelich and Arcia cancelling each other out. Would you give up Harrison, Phillips, Woodruff and Pina for Realmuto and Castro? Pina isn't just a throw-in in this deal, as he's a solid catcher. So we are talking two Top 100 outfielders and a young rotation piece for a decent catcher upgrade and a solid SS. Boy, that still seems rich. Put Barraclough in there and throw them a bone in the form of an upside prospect then. I'm not a big believer in Woodruff so even without Barraclough it doesn't seem too rich to me. You have to give to get in the business.

Villar back to SS? I mean i'd rather have Arcia of course because of age but it'd be a way to give Villar a year trial run as the prosps get ready...if it doesn't work then move on from him for good. We still have him for a few more years of control. Sign Walker / trade for Kipnis etc.

Why don't we plan on that sustained success 3-4 years out with our own prospects? 86 wins with a ton of guys performing to levels that probably aren't sustainable and we suddenly want to push all-in and give up our prospects for Yelich, Archer, whoever the hell else and hope we can overtake the Cubs or maybe win a one game playoff? It's insane to me. I'm on board with you trwi7, I want to sustain our rebuild until we are actually rebuilt, not abandon the plan all together because we "almost" made the playoffs last year. You know they do make more prospects, starting with the 2018 draft or swapping with other teams for their prospects. It's not like there is a finite amount of them and once they're gone the species is extinct....right? Maybe i'm the one nuts around here thinking there are only 3 OF spots (really 2 with Braun) and about 6 guys to play them, with another wave coming in 2-3 years behind that.

This is all well and good. I love yelich but calling him 5 tool at CF isn't right. He's not a strong defensive CF. Would be a GG LF but he's a worse defensive cf than Broxton. The arm can't play RF. I honestly wonder how this would play out defensively. Phillips could be a GG RF but yelich and braun wouldn't impress. Braun yelich santana would be quite bad defensively. Leads me to my ever reverting back to "god I wish we didnt have braun" take. Could get cain for less. Cain yelich santana shaw thames/aguilar pina 2b arcia. Damn Braun. It's going to play out likely this imo LF - Yelich CF - Brinson/Phillips whoever stays RF - Braun Santana traded, this may be where the hypothetical Ellsbury deal comes in too.

I want to hang on to our prospects. I would've been shopping Knebel, Santana, Shaw, Pina, Anderson, maybe Davies etc. the second out 27 was made in game 162. Braun would've been shipped out last offseason for the best offer I got from a team not on his no-trade list before his 10/5 rights kicked in. I would've done a complete scorched earth rebuild. Lose 100 for multiple years, get those top 1-3 draft picks, get all the bonus pool money to use in the later rounds. Every decent major leaguer traded for the best value I can get. I understand a lot of people don't want to build that way but that's exactly what I wanted to do and I see no value in trying to get a bunch of 2-3 WAR major league players in trades. Those are the players you get after you have an established young core that's capable of providing the 5-7 WAR seasons. This is such crap. How do you think an organization would ever be built? We're talking about lives, jobs, etc here while you play in perennial 100 loss land in a tiny market. Houston is a HUGE market. The Twins lived in 100 loss land for years, they got ZIPPO for it. The Padres have been living in dumpsterfire land for a decade, how is it working out for them? Kansas City lived there for THIRTY YEARS before it came together. Pittsburgh? Twenty years of being a joke before something came together. Milwaukee can't attract top talent as it is, let's try losing 100 games for awhile and see how that gets big time talent / coaching / management talent in here for this supposed great rebuild that will happen. Keep hugging those prospects though while real people are losing their jobs from management on down to the souvenier seller on the lower level. We're sure to have Mike Trout in Lewis Brinson, Derek Jeter in Isan Diaz, and Randy Johnson in Corbin Burns coming through the pipe. Nobody is saying sell the farm. Pieces out with hypothetical Yelich, pieces in with hypothetical other trades. Perhaps Stearns doesn't like this crop of prospects you like and there are better ones out there.
