  1. He isn't even close to being 30. I don't blame him for taking a 1 year deal even if he had the chance for 2. If he rebounded to be above average he could make serious bank. Another AS season and he could really make a haul.
  2. Not a bad deal for the ole Shoopster. Good luck to him, just was not going to work out here.
  3. I intend (with the wife) to save about $3.0mil-$4.0mil or so for retirement. Of course it is a long way off and inflation will make that seem much less impressive etc. etc., but that really isn't the point. I basically save so I will either have a great retirement and able to do many things money requires OR if I get sick of working be able to retire early and still have good funds to do so. I don't want to shoot for what I will need at 62 and be forced to work to that age to have the money I want yearly. I also don't want unexpected events take a hit to my retirement plan and suddenly need to work even longer to get the funds I want. Things could always change, but that is my general retirement plan I like to follow.
  4. I guess I find it a tad different when in college football you rarely, if ever, play other Top 5 or even Top 10 teams during the regular season. It isn't like in college basketball where we see all those Top 10 teams play each other constantly, especially out of conference. For instance Kansas will play Michigan State, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Villanova out of their conference for basketball. I can see after winning most of those games why someone would be a little annoyed they have to play garbage teams risking their chance at the title come March. I think that is something the current system really doesn't appreciate therefor teams just load up their non conference slate with garbage and/or good, but not great teams. With the lack of games they play is that something they could effectively encourage to outweigh the risk of scheduling it and losing? Not sure. I could see the argument for 6 teams as I don't really want to see 3 loss teams have a shot (which an 8 team bracket could cause, but I have no problem with 2 loss teams with a bunch of quality wins having a chance.
  5. If you guys saw someone with their head chopped off would you attempt CPR. Of course not. This thread has its head chopped off...just let it die. Please, it was gone before it started.
  6. Make sure the best team wins? In what world do you think the greater population of fans actually cares about that? Must be an Alabama fan. Seriously it is entertainment...not a spelling bee. Not too mention if they are the best team I think they can win 3 games in a row...if not, guess they weren’t so good. Not sure how you can even know that after the joke scheduling in the NCAA. Rarely do top teams play each other, especially out of conference.
  7. Pretty confident we weren’t chasing Goldy.
  8. Might as well put it on your headstone You also predicted 8-9 wins....so...
  9. Start early...that’s a pretty big key. Pretty basic scenario: -Start saving at 22 -5,000 a year -8% return -Retire at 62 $1,300,000mil at retirement. Which should end up at about $1mil if you saved tax free and gotta pay on it at retirement. So the average American should have no problem saving for retirement. IF you are proactive and start early! That is probably why it seems more unbelievable to older generations. There was less focus on starting early 20+ years ago. If you wait till 27 years old that pile of cash is suddenly $850,000. It is that important to start early. Of course all that is very generic estimites. Other things will effect it, but in general if you start early it doesn’t take too much effort to hit $1mil. Especially if you are making $50k at 22 and that slowly grows much higher as you gain experience. The growth at the end can be crazy though. Once I checked the difference of retiring at 62 vs. 64 and I nearly fell out of my chair. Of course you’d be crazy to have your savings all in high return places at that point. A few years can really make a difference.
  10. Right, depends on how you want to retire. $1mil is a pretty solid benchmark for the typical American who wants a solid retirement. If you want that vacation condo and many trips you will need more. On the flip side if you are just going to stay locally all the time and not spend much money on activities you should need a lot less.
  11. Change is a thing and can be okay. Just because it was one in the past doesn't mean it can't change.
  12. There is absolutely no way under this great sun we all soak under that some team is going to "sneak in" and win 3 games against the best of the best to win it all. If you find a way to win in some fluke way three games in a row...wow, get the movie equipment ready. I bet one of the top 4 seeds would still win it every year (at least almost), the lower seeds would likely get beat up often. The point is to draw more interest to the playoffs, make more games meaningful, and to make dozens more teams feel like they actually have a chance. It would be great for everybody...except maybe Alabama and Clemson who make it yearly anyway. I will say I do not support giving an auto bid to a mid-major type program. They will get destroyed too often...it isn't worth it and most people don't care about those team 20 miles from their stadium.
  13. Only on the hook through his age 34 season? HUGE score for Nationals if he is for real. Absolute steal if so. That being said little track record...pretty risky. $21mil isn't much these days and is hardly a crippling contract even if he regresses. Better than paying Harper if you ask me.
  14. It was all on Bostick. You recover the kick and the game is essentially over. He didn't block, muffed the kick, and the guy he was suppose to block got it. That was a simple recovery if he just blocks. I guess, sure, you could say the Seahawks would have still had time had they stopped the Packers on the ensuing drive...but that would have been quite a feat. Even a punting drive likely pins the Seahawks at their own 10-15 yard line with 60 seconds left. With no timeouts? Good luck, chances are the Packers just get the 1st they needed. Though if you are also referring to HHCD due to the 2pt conversion…that was pretty brutal too. Regardless the point is McCarthy coached them to that Super Bowl in my opinion.
  15. In my district a lot of older(near retirement age) workers end up gifting some of their unused days to people who have medical emergencies, but don't have enough time banked. I know I have my days saved up, but I have to use them for paternity leave come April. I would be curious how paternity leave works at other businesses. My wife gets 8 weeks paid and then has to use her vacation time. I see this in federal a lot too. I don't think there is a super meaningful end goal for someone to save all the sick time though. More of a big insurance if you get sick long term or it can be used as "time working" when you retire. So it can allow you to get your years of service early or extended for pension purposes. Like you I get paternity leave so that is what I will eventually use mine for. I believe I can get like 6 weeks or so. I think sick leave should have some kind of value when retiring or quitting a job. I don't think it should be equivalent of your hourly wage, but at least something to avoid people abusing it before they go out the door. I mean no offense, but if I ever decide to switch jobs I might as well get the flu every time I have an interview...no need to use annual leave that actually gets cashed out.
  16. I think any half intelligent person would want to be out of New England once Tom and Bill retire. At least it would not seem like a mega attractive location...you could probably do better.
  17. So? That isn't the problem I was even referring to. It is about there only being 4 teams and it being, mostly, a giant revolving door. 'Any team' ending up in the Top 4 is almost an impossible feat. It will take UCF 3+ undefeated season in a row to make it...which we could argue whether that is right or not, but point is for the majority of teams they could end up undefeated and still find a way to miss. There needs to be more opportunity for the greater pool. Will it still end up Power 5 teams all the way through? Sure, but at least it allows a dominating UCF to make it eventually and at least great but not elite Power 5 teams can make it occasionally.
  18. At Marquette next Saturday is a tough game. I'm not sure this team is one that can look past anybody. If Happ or Trice is off they will struggle, although the supporting cast is looking stronger. I guess that is true, they aren't exactly a team flush with depth or guys who will be able to light it up when Happ/Trice struggle. Still their schedule the next month+ is pretty light. I definitely think the Badgers will need to be a team to pull out many close/dramatic wins to be a threat in the B10 and get a higher seed come tourney time.
  19. Not sure if it would be typical in such a situation, but Rodgers really should be involved in the hiring process. I know a lot of people would groan at the thought and think that is ridiculous, but he has to work with said person. To be incredibly successful they really need to mesh and excel working together. Probably should make sure the philosophy is going to work with the QB.
  20. I don't really blame McCarthy for the overall failure we have seen. Once again we are talking about a guy who won a Super Bowl and minus a Bostick coached us to another one. I am not sure McCarthy is killing the offense, but he certainly is doing nothing to take it above and beyond. It is one of those situations where McCarthy is doing what is expected at best...time to go see if they can find someone to get more out of the players than their talent shows etc. or be more creative.
  21. Just saw Wisconsin really doesn't have much difficulty in their schedule until MID JANUARY. They should bode pretty well for them if they can stay focused and beat teams they should beat. I mean worst case mid-January they should have 3 losses at most...heck potentially just one. Of course after that their schedule gets pretty brutal, but at that point they should be going on all cylinders.
  22. And important to note that sky high record was over half a decade ago. Basic inflation would say that would be about $115mil now...though I believe they said that payroll was putting them at a loss. Regardless anything in that range would be a pretty good guess. The TV deal is coming. There is an old article out there that stated when it is "rumored" to end...but I believe 2019 was the year. I am not sure how big of an increase we will see on that front, but it will be well into the 8 figures yearly even if we are a small market. Our deal is stupidly outdated. Long term I think our payroll could be sustained at $125mil or slightly more I we competed consistently enough.
  23. They are a win now team with a 35 year old HOF QB. While I am not necessarily vouching for a retread I am not sure going with someone with zero head coaching experience is the safest route. Going with a QB coach etc. would be unchartered territory for said person.
  24. I don't think my significant other needs 300 more reasons to go spend money at Target.
  25. More importantly another year passes and I still wonder why we still don't have an 8 team playoff. There needs to be some kind of chance for non powerhouses to have a shot. Looking at the last 3 years these are some of the teams that would have seen the playoff had it been 8 teams: 2018 - UCF/Michigan 2017 - Wisconsin/USC 2016 - Wisconsin/Penn State 2015 - Michigan State/Oregon/USC I mean sure these aren't a bunch of mid majors, but they are teams that have very little chance to make it under the current system. An 8 team playoff would give many more teams a chance, wouldn't make conference championship games a do or die, and would leave teams some sliver of error. You would also add a lot of drama to the selection of the 7/8 seed as they would be quite similar to 9-12 seeds. They have to do something eventually. While I am not a die hard college football guy I would expect 3/4 of the teams being the same every year plus a few other that revolve in to get boring.
