  1. I still prefer Villanueva in the seventh/eighth inning when he can be used to get more than three outs. I think he's best utilized that way. Of course Yost often used him in garbage time, but I'm assuming that will stop this year.
  2. Why does Ed Werder live in the Dallas Cowboys practice facility? This is worse than Pedro Gomez on Barry Bonds.
  3. Just wacky that Philly would not offer Burrell arbitration and pursue Ibanez instead.
  4. I'm once again a bit afraid the trade will be Cameron for Cabrera and AAAA fodder.
  5. ESPN Radio just reported the deal dead, according to my friend.
  6. Melvin has leverage in this JB. If he doesn't get a good offer for Cameron... Well gosh he'll just hold on to a good center fielder for one year. He's not going to trade a good player for a guy just because that guy happens to be left-handed (switch hitter, whatever). The Yankees need to make this trade a lot more than the Brewers do, so Melvin should just be patient.
  7. Alright well I will continue to hold out hope that there is more to this than just Cameron for Cabrera. That would completely change things obviously.
  8. Why couldn't they have competed? I think they were well-positioned for another wildcard run with Cameron. They had a bit of money to add one good pitcher at least.
  9. A year of Cameron playing for the Brewers plus draft picks>Melky Cabrera + $9.5 mil. I do agree with FtJ that Cameron may have accepted arbitration, but I don't think that's a sure thing either.
  10. Like endaround said, they would have likely received better value by keeping Cameron next year and taking draft picks for him in 2010. That or trading him mid-season.
  11. Even if the Brewers are doing this to clear salary so the can spend the money elsewhere, it's a bad deal because Cabrera isn't close to a fair return for Cameron. And if they don't add anything with the money, it will be even worse.
  12. Apparently Buster Olney reported the only hangup is deciding how much money the Brewers will throw in?? This seems to be getting even worse.
  13. Sure Swisher is not good in center but the Brewers could find a center fielder elsewhere. He could play either corner or even first base if Fielder is moved. Swisher is a very good first baseman.
  14. I'd still love to get Swisher. Not sure if the Yankees would do a one-for-one though.
  15. Yes but if the Brewers had some damning information concerning his health they wouldn't have offered him arbitration.
  16. Assuming the Yankees don't sign Mark Teixeira, the Brewers will get the Yankees' first round pick. They will also be awarded a sandwich pick. This doesn't come from the Yankees; it is a round created by MLB between the first and second rounds.
  17. Does anyone know the latest on Smoltz? Last I remember he was contemplating retirement because he didn't know if he'd recover from his injuries.
  18. Sure it was 10 mil/year, but the obvious key was only one year. I still firmly stand by that move even though it didn't work out. They seemingly paid a bit more in year one to avoid giving two or three years. Gagne had a good year in 2007 so there was reason to believe he'd be good in 2008. I'd argue paying one year/ten mil for a good closer (which most thought Gagne was at the time of his signing) is more "shrewd" than paying 40+ for three or four years for a really good closer. That all being said, I also wouldn't be surprised to see Melvin give some closer a multi-year deal this off-season. That likely wouldn't be shrewd either.
  19. Really hoping the Brewers are working on Sheets, but it may already be too late. Edit: So Melvin "visited" with Sheets' agent, but isn't even discussing an offer. Huh?
  20. One of the rare times Elias got it right, because Tex is the number one free agent. Wow, seven years. He'll be great for at least two or three but that has a very good chance of getting ugly. I guess that's the way NY operates, and Mussina worked out for them, so who knows.
  21. I hope this is legit because if it is he'll have signed quicker than expected and the Brewers can move on. Plus we'll get a first round pick (assuming they don't also sign Tex).
  22. The Mariner's have no use for Fielder with Clement about ready. Their DH was Jose Vidro.
  23. I imagine this means guys like Fuentes and Wood might not get as much as expected either.
  24. He tried to lock up Hart last year and Hart didn't want to sign.
