  1. Anything less than making the playoffs and playing in an actual series would be a bitter disappointment in my eyes. With basically the same roster and upgrading as much as we did at catcher missing the playoffs or losing a wild card game is not good enough. If this season does end up as a disappointment you can blame two things; the departure of Derek Johnson who has an underwhelming Cincinnatti staff with the third best ERA in baseball while our staff struggles and the mismanagement of the roster specifically Hiura being in AAA and the lack of right handed bats in the lineup. Most disagreed with me when I suggested making a move for Encarnacion and the majority of posters didn't realize how much we would miss Johnson. It would be a total shame of we can't even make the playoffs with basically the same roster.
  2. I keep saying it but this team doesn't have one legitimate right handed threat on this team. Hiura should be hitting third for the Brewers not in AAA.
  3. At this point of the season Cincy has the 4th best ERA in MLB and the Brewers are 18th. Its far enough into the season to say that we desperately miss Derek Johnson.
  4. I agree that the pitching is a far bigger problem than the offense but the offense is still too lefthanded and needs a right handed power threat to balance things out and first base is the only place to make that move.
  5. Its very discouraging that we didn't make this move. We need another right handed bat and the only position where we can make a move like this is first base. Encarnacion was the right handed power that we really could have used to balance the lineup along with Hiura and the price was cheap in terms of prospect capital.
  6. Stearns is asleep at the wheel. We desperately need a right handed power bat and could have had Encarnacion dirt cheap. Nah let's keep hoping that Aguilar gets going which I would be shocked if it does in fact happen.
  7. Encarnacion cant be any worse defensively than Thames so I wouldn't worry about the defensive aspect. Pretty sure that Seattle was given the 5 million for the buyout when they traded for him so at worst we would only be on the hook for the rest of this years salary. With a thin farm system we really need to trade for cheap reinforcements (cheap prospect value not money) and Encarnacion fills the bill. Really first base is the only place where we can upgrade with a right handed bat besides of course Hiura taking over second base for good. If we are going to be a threat in the playoffs we need a guy like Encarnacion when we face tough left handed starters. I really think he is the perfect acquisition and with so few contenders looking for first basemen we should get him dirt cheap.
  8. If this team is going to be a real threat in the playoffs against teams like Chicago and LA we are going to need a couple of right handed bats. One of those bats will be Hiura and I think the other one should be Encarnacion who won't cost much besides money. We currently don't have one legitimate right handed threat in the lineup. Braun has been decent but is no longer elite, Cain has been absolutely horrendous and there isn't much to be said for Aguilar who has been worse than some of the pitchers. Come playoff time if we are good enough to make it we will be facing top notch lefties such as Kershaw and Hamels. As good as Yelich, Moustakas, and Grandal have been they are all weaker against lefties. The lineup as is may be good enough to get to the postseason but if we want to win a World Series we will need to hit some top lefties and Encarnacion has proven that he can do that.
  9. This team needs Hiura to balance out the lineup. We currently don't have a real threat from the right side and we will need that to beat Chicago and LA who both have a lot of lefties.
  10. We don't have the prospects necessary to make a deal to improve the team so the only way we can do something that will move the needle is to take on a big contract. I think there is a fairly good chance that Aguilar is toast and we need a consistent right handed power threat which Encarnacion would be.
  11. If you put it that way I guess so but luckily we have a far better GM and scouting director than we did back then. Claudio is a dime a dozen lefty reliever who is basically batting practice for right handed hitters. This trade isn't the end of the world but it sure was not a move we should have made.
  12. Our right hand bats are Cain who is a great all around player but not a power threat, Braun who is still a decent player but hurt a lot, Aguilar with his .304 slugging pct, Grandal who is better as a lefty, Hiura who will be great but maybe not this year, Arcia who is not a great offensive player and Perez with his sub .300 OBP. We can definitely use an upgrade at first base if Aguilar doesnt show major improvement. If Aguilar improves dramatically in the next month or so maybe we don't have to make a move like this but there is a good chance that he doesn't.
  13. Its a short term commitment and it will probably be just a complete salary dump by Seattle. Attanasio has shown a willingness to expand payroll when we are in contention and this is a perfect opportunity. Our prospect pool is quite shallow at this point in time so a chance to acquire a big right handed bat at the low cost of pretty much just money is perfect. We still have time to see if Aguilar will hit but if he doesn't we really need to upgrade. We don't have a consistent right handed power threat other than Braun and there are plenty of questions about him as well so this is a nice potential fix for this issue.
  14. Aguilar has been terrible since the second half of last year and Encarnacion has been good for years. We desperately need a right handed bat and Encarnacion will come cheap. Yeah the contract isn't ideal but having a first baseman slugging in the low .300s is not acceptable for a contending team. We need a legit right handed threat to help balance this lineup. Hopefully Hiura can help this situation and Braun continues to be at least decent but the first base situation needs to be fixed. Seattle will probably just be happy to dump the contract and we should pounce on this opportunity unless Aguilar all of a sudden starts hitting which I don't expect to happen. Go look at the numbers Jesus put up from August on last year. Saying Aguilar has been terrible since the second half of last year is simply incorrect. He hasn't been great this year, but also isn't the black hole he's being made out as. This is a "grass is always greener" argument right now, as we are still early in the season. If we get to the end of June and Jesus is still struggling to find his power, then making a move would be a consideration. Aguilar is slugging .304 right now. His OBP is good considering his BA but he has flat out been terrible all year. I am more than willing to give him at least a few more weeks to turn things around but if he doesn't he needs to be replaced and Encarnacion is a perfect replacement.

  16. I think this is the guy we should target if Aguilar continues to be this awful. We need another reliable right handed bat and Encarnacion is that guy. Seattle will probably be happy just to get rid of his contract so he should come cheap. Encarnacion makes 20 million this year so picking him up at the deadline will probably cost us 10 million which is a lot but ownership has never been shy about spending when we are in contention. He also has a club option next season for 20 million with a 5 million buyout so we would be on the hook for at least 15 million if we decline the option. I think this team is in desperate need for a big time right handed bat to balance the lineup.
  17. In other news Cincy lost 1-0 to the Mets so another great game from what was not a good pitching staff before they stole Johnson away.
  18. I don't know how much more people need to see to realize what a huge loss Johnson is to this pitching staff. Nearly every pitcher has seriously regressed especially our young trio of starters. Meanwhile Cincy with one talented starter has been pitching lights out as a staff all year long. The question I have is were we just cheap with Johnson or were there issues between him and Counsell and/or Stearns. Anyway you slice it we are paying a big price for letting Derek go. A smart team is going to hire Johnson next offseason as a manager but we should have at least had him until someone made that move on him. Lets also remember that we let Lee Tunnel go as well. Why was he let go when the staff was so good last year especially the bullpen where he coached.
  19. Brewers are next to last in the NL in team ERA and Cincinnati is 3rd. We definitely have a more talented staff than they do so I am putting this all on downgrading from Johnson to Hook. We pitched pennies on the pitching coach position and we are now paying the price for that huge mistake.
  20. Personally I believe that there must be some sort of turmoil in the clubhouse between the coaches. That is really the only rational explanation that I can come up with as to why a team that was one win away from playing in the World Series would have this much turnover in their coaching staff. I really hope this is not a case of Attanasio being cheap and if it is you have to wonder if he will be willing to pay Stearns at the top of the market which he has certainly earned. We must do whatever it takes to keep our GM in the fold. If Attanasio has to pay 8 or even 10 million per season to keep Stearns he just has to do it. We cannot afford to lose him and hope that we don't hire the next Bando or Taylor. Losing Johnson is a big blow and I really hope its not a sign of things to come.
  21. My concern is not Montgomery getting the Mets GM job but Melvin bringing him to New York as assistant GM or something.
  22. According to Kylie McDaniel it looks like Melvin is the favorite for the Mets job. Good luck to him if he goes but I fear losing Montgomery since Melvin brought him back here in the first place. I think Montgomery is our best front office guy other than Stearns and I would hate to lose him so I think we should make Stearns team president and promote Montgomery to GM. We can't compete with the big markets for players on the free agent market but we can afford to keep our top executives. Keeping Montgomery who has had a big hand in drafting guys like Woodruff and Burnes is an absolute must for us.
  23. We would be lucky to get Ian Snell for Knebel at this point.
  24. Thats as bad of an at bat as you will ever see.
  25. Thames is not nearly good enough with the bat to accept his awful defense. When Braun can't play we should start Broxton. I have no idea why we stopped caring about defense when it was a big reason for our early season success.
