  1. Catching does slow you down but not until mid - late 20's usually. I caught a few games in slo-pitch when I was young, and I still blame that for my lack of speed...it couldn't be the extra weight I carry.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  2. I have heard from a pair of writers who say they have no idea how TW lucked his way into such a coveted assignment that many guys would have given their left...arm for. Judging on his writing and immaturity, he hasn't stepped it up since then. He's said hello to his west coast peeps in the game blogs so much, I quit reading them. One person said he could barely handle preps, "borrowing" quotes from coaches in the pre-game because he was at the snack stand, misspelling names, and so on. One particular writer said "I almost turned in my press badge" the day he found out Tony was a Brewers' beat writer.
  3. If it's close to I94, they'll draw from about 30 minutes away. Lots of the people who go to these games are 55+ and families, and while they go to Brewers' games, they are often looking for a cheap alternatives. You can easily have both in a metro market, even some cities have an NHL and minor league hockey.
  4. I do think they are more likely to trade to fill gaps than sign FA's, with the exception of a SP...I would guess they'll go hard after a veteran who does not qualify as a Type A...a Derek Lowe type, or maybe a Brad Penny, either a guy without stellar numbers, or a guy who has been hurt. I don't see Prince being moved either, he's around 'til after '11, and I do not see him worth any more with 3 years left than 2. There's no replacement knocking on the door, so I see little incentive.
  5. I doubt if they have a new stadium being built without that contraction threat. They went from saying the Twins should play games at an expanded Midway and move it to the Dome if it looked like rain to approving a new ballpark in just a couple years. That doesn't happen without something pushing things along. Much like negative political ads, no one likes threats, but people use 'em because they work. By the way, PIT seems to be on the correct track for the time in ages. They are not a bad team, and they are young and building properly. I see a light at the end of the tunnel. The best part is, their new GM doesn't give a rat's behind what the fans think. If you start listening to the fans, you'll never win, as 90% of them do not have a clue.
  6. Braun and Hart are back, and Cameron is probably 60-75% back. I have Brantley penciled in to take over sometime in 2010, or maybe be a reserve in '10 and take over in '11, but that's all silly BA style stuff. If Cameron does not return, they'll continue to look for a lefty bat who can play CF, and I'll be forced to bring up Dave Dejesus weekly at Ramblings.
  7. Catching slows you down as well. Hardly any C's are even of average speed, so it's not a concern at all until he is moved, if he is.
  8. I realize he'll only play maybe 100 games this season, but he is still hitting .299/.345/.400 Weeks is hitting .335/.380...why bring in a old guy when you have that now. Gobias, BA is meaningless to me too. It does make up much of OBP...that's why I don't care about it. It's included, and OBP counts other ways of not getting out, while BA does not. That's why I don't use it.
  9. I don't know of any managers calling pitches anymore...that seems to have fallen by the wayside. Often, pitchouts, and sometimes throws to 1B are called, but pitches? I have not seen that for ages. You'd think it'd get media attention if someone was still doing it.
  10. He's a platoon guy at the corners, his swing is huge. That's why he'd be a good fit in CF...he'd be no worse than "passable", given his skills.
  11. $1 at a buffet, unless my son makes a mess, then $2.
  12. Nix is not a bad reserve OF at all, but they're a dime a dozen. I'd rather have someone with OBP skills rather than power in that spot. Very good defender. Weeks is like 3-4% from his career numbers. He's what he always has been, an above average offensive 2B, who has hit a few balls right at guys this year. His BA is low, but if you're using BA, I'm done here.
  13. Weeks or Hardy might be a better question, if not in April '09, soon, as Escobar will be up and at SS soon. I'm a Rickie fan, but given a number of factors, including Rickie's injury history, I'd guess JJ is a member of the organization after Weeks is gone.
  14. Stocker's there unless there are 40 man issues. No way he'd be in high A ball otherwise.
  15. I think the Uecker seats sell out right away, I'd rather pay than stand in line and get their hours before the game, which i believe you gotta do to get Ueck seats. I think he said he got his tiks from a buddy. Shouldn't be spitting seeds on the floor, usher probably should have just told you that. Slippery, unsafe, and saliva's like a health concern, isn't it?
  16. Bike, I always tip, just not as much as these folks, usually between $1 + the change and $2 + the change. I delivered for 5 years, I know the game.
  17. MLBTR guesses 3-4 years, $16-17M per. I want no part of that. None. With his injuries, he is not likely to age well, to say the least.
  18. Ben's a first half pitcher, who probably does wear down quite a bit. He's not a big guy, and his conditioning is probably not as good as others. I would have to agree there was little good to sending CC out for the 9th, but as I said, 2 higher pitch counts out of 9 starts in a pennant race is not being abused by any means. CC's due to get rocked one of these days, whether he throws 60 or 160.
  19. They won't worry about Rottino and the pitchers getting work, but they can get work if needed, it allows you to PR for Kendall, for example, or save your 'pen if up or down 11-0. It's a bit silly, but it changes to a strategy game, with minor advantages looking bigger.
  20. Sounds like he said they needed to sweep, and then kind of said he thought they would. As goofy as that front office is, Cecil might well be fighting for his job. They fired Garner right after going to the Series, right?
  21. I'm surprised they have not announced ticket number 3M being sold. That could be any day now.
  22. End, the bullpen went several inings in each game in LA. They were far from rusty.
  23. I've had Sheets going to ATL for a couple years, but HOU is close as well.
  24. Jay, that's some good analysis. I think many folks are overreacting to just about everything, and this is no exception. Pressure affects people differently, and one thing is that minor decisions are magnified. That's how I see it. Hardy could have made the entire thing moot, but you can't pick and choose your bobbles. As for Ben, his second half numbers are not nearly as good as his 1st. He is a bit slight for a RH, and he can probably use the extra time off as much as anyone. People can mock heavy set guys, but they have more "oomph" (to use a highly technical term). I would be concerned if CC went 130 several starts, or averaged 125 in a stretch. But, in his 2 high pitch games, he's went 124 and 130, and both included a walk and an error in his final inning, if memory serves. 2 of 9 for a veteran in a pennant race? Hardly an issue. Heck, in the playoffs, 140 is not out of the question, though it's always hard for me to imagine a SP being a better option than a fresh RP at that point. DH, both E's by JJ were him trying to rush DP's. He just needs to get one and let the 2B worry about 2. That said, as a solid defensive SS in softball, you go into fielding slumps...you start to expect bad hops, or knock it down because you aren't sure of yourself. I'm not worried about Hardy's hands. Errors are not spread out evenly, they are often bunched a bit.
