I doubt he starts '09 in MIL. He's proven nothing at AAA except velocity isn't everything, and that he hasn't been able to get those guys out consistently. He's nothing but depth at this point.

CV is the only one with options. An extra bench guy, a 14th position player, is at best, a tiny advantage. Also, if you have a pair of short starts in a row, your bullpen is shot. I don't think Ned feels like "punting" this time of year, having a SP hit and go back out down 6-0 in the 4th.

Barring a roof problem, it's a guarantee. The only question right now is 3.1M or not. When my son and I decided to go to tomorrow's game, I never dreamed a Monday afternoon game would sell out...I thought 32-35K tops. It is astounding.

Unless you need as HR, Kendall is as likely as any PH to reach safely.

Nothing wrong with subbing if you can handle the pay for a year or two, it gives you a lot more free time. If you need easy cash, MS and I recommend picking up a delivery job, just a couple nights a week gives you plenty of cash on hand.

I'd love to have Balfour this year. Last year, however, you can only give a guy so many games and then let him go elsewhere. If he would have had options, they'd still him, I s'pose. Greg makes a fine point about McClung. Many teams have 30 outings a year that equal a 6+ ERA, as that's why guys with a 5.50 ERA have value. Seth has been much better than that.

No one minded the cash Frankie got, it was the 4 years. Tough to figure he'll be worth anything close to that in 2010 & 2011.

As many point out, when you argue batting order, you're arguing semantics. There is no right or wrong batting order. Next, Counsell has not started versus a LHP. Saying no platoon exists is incorrect, and does nothing. As I will say for the final time, Counsell is a better defender than Branyan, and quite apparently, they are choosing to go with him because of his approach at the plate. Choosing to say he is 0-9 and using the tiniest sample available, and then saying Ned should not go with the hot hand...at best, is spinning in circles. I don't notice many line drive outs of late, so his leash is likely getting tight. However, as often occurs, I do find it ironic that many insist on saying the team should improve the defense, and then complaining every time they play the better defensive player. You'll also see many folks saying Cameron is dragging the team down, yet not only has he been good defensively, he's outperformed Hart in the batter's box. This is far from the case with Craig, but you can also make the same case with Kendall, as they love the way he works his staff. Russell has also had many balls go off his glove or just past him at 3B. I tend to feel it's a good idea to go with the best offensive lineup, as some guys won't see a single play all night. However, some will, though no one knows who. Counsell is a wonderful defender, who may have saved the game the other night, or at least a couple runs that may have changed the complexion of the game. Escobar will almost certainly replace Hardy at SS soon, and is very unlikely to match his offense, at least for a few years. Defense does have value, it is just difficult to measure.

I'd much rather have McClung too. As bad as Balfour was in his 3 outings, you're going to keep him around in a playoff race? Hardly. Mota had a very good April and May, a poor stretch, and now has been fine since the all-star break, or just after. He's also throwing 94-96 consistently. There's many contenders that would love to add him. His ceiling is not very high, but he's not going to go without a job either.

I like Dykstra a lot too, as he's doing very well in a tough league for a HS kid. I only hope Lawrie is able to step in like that. For those in the Fox Valley, they might both be in Appleton next season...

He was worthless for us last year, but he has put it together nicely. They were not in a situation to be patient, he was out of options, so there's really nothing they could have done.

It seems to me Prince would garner more in trade...but not much. The difference between free talent at 1B, say Scott Hatteburg versus Prince is not as great as the spread between JJ and a Juan Castro type. The mere fact JJ is a decent SS who can hit a HR to RCF as a RH bat makes him one of a unique breed.

I would assume the Brewers decided this in late July, as they had to move Jeffress around, and could have moved others. As 39 hints, as of today, Brantley is the Crew's. They can't just ignore 2 or 4 players who may be on a list. I would love to see Lawrie go to Hawaii myself.

I'd love to have his future. He was rushed and is still adjusting, but if you're 23 and even a passable SP, the odds are you'll have several very good years in that 26-29 range.
