  1. Guys like Jenkins, aging vets on the decline who can platoon a bit; are free talent. You don't need to give anything for them. We'll see, but the Crew seems in no rush to move Corey to CF. Given how good Cameron has done, he might well be back in '09.
  2. Hart was healthy to start the year. Despite that Yost still played Mench over him. He did a couple games in early April last year, probably to protect Corey a bit, or to get Mench into the lineup. Kapler also played the other day in place of Hart to give him a breather. Just a simple case of either going with the hot hand or matchups. However, the big uproar was in late April and much of May, while Corey rested his wrist and only played versus most LHP...over and over, we saw Corey was not hurt, he was just being platooned. The irony here is, when he admitted it later in the Summer, when Weeks' wrist injury was being discussed, many here still denied it, and still do. It's called overreaction. I've gotten used to it. Don't think this bodes well for Gwynn nor apparently is Gibbons impressing much. Nix can play all 3 OF spots well and has enough pop to play LF without it being a small ball lineup. I don't think Gibbons, Nelson, or anyone else meet those specifications at all. He might play a day game after a night game for Cameron, or start versus a tough RHP for Kapler, but he's mainly there for his lefty bat, speed, and defense. Gwynn has value, as he's continually mentioned in rumors, but he does not look like a fit in MIL, as it is a power park and he's not a power player. Unless they have a spot for him on the '09 roster, he's trade bait.
  3. Many fans overreact often to minor changes in the lineup. Some people still insist Hart wasn't hurt last April and May when he had to rest his wrist because it never made the news. The more you talk, the more your opponent knows. I still remember the time the Brewers got Bill Castro up in the bullpen in extra innings and fooled the other team into pitching to the non-pitcher rather than walking him to face the pitcher. Talking about injuries does not help at all, so you don't do it.
  4. I'd have to agree with Briggs, as the '09 rotation, as of today, is Yo, Parra, Bush, Suppan, and McClung...and that's if no one is added at all. Even when you fail to figure in the ceiling for Gallardo and Parra, that's a group that will keep you in most games, and at least have a real possibility of having 5 SP's with a 4.50 ERA or less. Needless to say, many folks have been spoiled by the pitching this year, but with Doug adding depth, the '09 group might be very capable, albeit, unlikely to match the 2008 version.
  5. Rivera and Counsell would play 1B for the rest of the game, or a game until a replacement arrives. I think Gwynn would have been the guy, but he's been awful the last 45 days or so. A 650ish OPS in AAA is not going to play in LF regardless of his defense.
  6. Even having them pitch every 5th day, Parra does not pick up a start. with his innings so high, that would be very unlikely anyway.
  7. Blalock's splits are off-the-charts, but I'd be more concerned about his R/L ones than his home/road, because they make so little sense. Arlington is offensive, but not that much. Miller Park, while neutral overall, is plus for HR's, so he'd add some pop.
  8. Blalock is the only FA that makes any sense, and it would also allow others to be dealt for pitching, or a CF. Dillon is already around to platoon, for gosh sakes.
  9. I don't think he'll ever start in the bigs, but he may get a serious look as a reliever.
  10. The Reds were not going to offer Dunn arby, or so the rumors had it. They got 3 more players than nothing, so that's not so bad.
  11. I've always heard the PTBNL has to be a minor leaguer, but this time of year, with the waivers, that may not be the case.
  12. Never heard of either of those, but it's possible.
  13. Most teams put all their players on the first few days of August, except the ones with no trade clauses. It helps camoflauge who they want to move.
  14. Santana got 6y/$137M...how is 5y/$90M overpaying? That's just fantasy.
  15. The point would be to get them more starts, not fewer or versus certain teams.
  16. Hall will probably be traded, and Hardy or Weeks might be as well. I would not worry about FA's, as a trade is oodles more likely.
  17. Productive outs are probably part of it, as is even when Counsell K's, he might see 10 pitches, as he did today. He's the "professional hitter" they discuss a lot, but without the success. He does look good up there, and works the pitcher. Note Hart's HR again today. Protection exists, but barely. It's not worth discussing a tenth as much as it is brought up.
  18. They'll find a LH bat to play 3B or CF, one way or another.
  19. Dillard and DiFelice will handle any inning eaters situations. Pena has not done a thing except fail to do well in AAA.
  20. I don't think Gibbons and Gwynn are similar at all. I think Stocker might well come back, as I don't know why else they brought him back into the system. If he does not, Gwynn will fill that role. I think we'll see most members of the 40 when AAA is done...Hernan might only get 3 AB's and PR a few times, but the only reason not to have him around is cost, and that ship has sailed.
  21. I can't come up with 6, but I'd settle for Busty Young Women and hope the daily double was under the final one.
  22. What else do you do with a brat patty? His steaks always have perfect marks on them, he must move them 4 times to do that. I only touch my steak when they go on, one flip, and come off.
  23. Grease traps and the burning smell from dehorning cattle are the worst I've smelled. I don't think the paper mills of Mosinee stink, they're just there. It bothers a lot of folks though.
  24. Spaniels are a wonderful breed, as friendly and dedicated as any.
