  1. He's had a >750 OPS 3 of the last 4 years. Calling him a 700 OPS player is factually incorrect. He is old, and may decline some, but if he plays 81-100 games, I think he'll be fine. He may well be paired with Lucroy to mentor him, as he did with Weiters for a bit. The lefty/righty match makes sense.
  2. They also had Young playing 2B while future all-stars Belliard and Loretta sat on the bench. Roster mismanagement was an issue, to say the least.
  3. I could imagine KC having interest in a Hart/Dejesus swap, especially if they move Guillen somehow. Dejesus has barely played RF, so I doubt his arm is anything but below average...often guys with weak arms get more assist opportunities, so they rack up assists. However, Catalanotto's arm was not built for RF, and he was passable.
  4. This explains why my grumpy, anti-social self is where he is.
  5. Women in today's world would be full of college women...but given most classes are, maybe the appeal is not as strong as I think...
  6. Poker is close to free for ESPN and beats the average NBA game. And it repeats well. Needless to say, that's a fine combo.
  7. I would love to take the WW2 class, and could not stand 5 minutes of mythology, so that's an easy call for me.
  8. Gerut may be non-tendered, Hart has no chance to be. As for the rest, what Colby said is true, they do not need a CF, and if they need a backup, they should go for a LH bat. At best, there are some factual inaccuracies in there.
  9. I was a Poli Sci major, and most of my classmates either did law school, grad school, or just used it as a "I have a degree" to interview for normal jobs. It does show you can read and research stuff, which is probably more valuable in a good economy, but who knows what that will be in several years. I also recall a HIS professor saying that the most common occupation of HIS majors was an insurance agents...even more than teaching.
  10. Isn't Bedard out 'til late summer? I don't see much interest considering how into innings eaters Doug is.
  11. Dye is a DH. I'd rather take a chance on Matsui than go with Dye, as I know Hideki can still hit.
  12. Wolf may not get 3 years, but the money per year is probably about right.
  13. Joe, you could get stuck with them. You could sign one and they could get hurt working out the next day. With Cameron, there are literally 35 guys capable of being everyday CF's, that's why the Yankees were the only rumored team looking at him last year. Cameron on a 1y/$12M deal might be very tough to move at all.
  14. I see plenty of relievers falling to $1M per later in the offseason. With Hoffman, Coffey, Stetter, and probably Carlos V in the picture (and Narveson will likely be as well, as he's out of options and they'll want him around as a #6/7 SP), there's only a spot or two left. They'll see if Claudio returns first. I'm still hoping for Gregg Zaun as a one year stopgap behind the plate.
  15. Millwood had the 8th best ERA in the AL in '09, despite pitching his home games in a noted bandbox. Over the last 3 years, his ERA was 4.58, which probably turns into a 4.10ish ERA in Miller Park and going to the NL. For the most part, he's been healthy and a noted innings eater for a decade. Add that to the one year deal aspect, he's not bad even at $12M.
  16. One year deals are nice, as many of us hate to see arms that are often injured in a long-term commitment. I've never seen anything that shows FIP to be more predictive than ERA, nor if FIP is more consistent. You might be able to use it to try and get a feel for who had bad luck and the like, but it seems to me many pitchers likely beat it annually.
  17. Full season people get priority, and then down the list...9 pack is on the low end of the totem pole, and then seniority also helps.
  18. While Hart is still with the team, it is a non-issue. If Hart is dealt, we'll see if that's part of the plan.
  19. Our hot water heater quit this summer, the auto ignition switch failed and had to be reset. Luckily, one of the neighbors is trained in plumbing and HVAC and fixed it in 30 seconds.
  20. Sounds like money is a bit tighter than you might hope, as they can't take that risk. That's why having Hardy at SS and Cameron in CF while still adding SP's was a pipe dream.
  21. They hit their 3's today. Hughes may never reach that Mike Flowers/Kelley defensive level, but he sure is solid.
  22. I think these contracts are only up in even numbered years...all are 2, 4, or rarely 6 year contracts, methinks.
  23. Duncan will get a bench spot somewhere you'd think. He's been dominant in AAA for 1200+ AB's.
  24. Masterson was looked at as a RP, and Buchholtz was going to be in AAA. They were the depth, in case those guys did not work out, which is how it worked out. That's one of the advantages of being a large market, you can make a signing for $5M and say "0h well" if it doesn't work out. They are looking at Sheets and Harden this year as well.
  25. As Bo said, if they hit some of those open 3's, it's a different game. People need to realize that you don't need to hit as high a percentage of 3's to make it a good shot. Even the announcers seem to lack this understanding of basic math. An open 3, unless you can't shoot at all, is the best shot in the college game...not to mention the long rebounds. That said, there are also days or nights where the outside shots just don't fall, while, in theory, your defense and rebounding should be more consistent each game.
