  1. Often, cheap hotels are old, family owned places that are every bit as nice as a $30-50 room. I would drive or sleep, but I would not let the room price affect my call.
  2. The most popular minor league FA's get six figures, so they are very much in demand. A few get 40 man spots and big league deals each year.
  3. Rivera, Dillard, McClung, Cruz, maybe even Iribarren, as I still do not see a spot for him on the 25 man. They may well be able to sign Cruz to a AAA deal if they give him near 40 man money. Bush and Villy are tough...there will be better SP's than Bush sign for $4.5M or less, but the odds of the Brewers hitting that guy is not all that great. I still wonder if he's 100% too, and that could play a part.
  4. The irony to me is, if Suppan would have been shut down 2-3 starts earlier, his ERA would have been about 4.75ish, if memory serves. Now, of course he made those starts, so it's tough not to count them, but I'm inclined to think of him in the same way I did before, an innings eater whose probably a 4.75-5 guy. That's worth nowhere near what he makes, but it does have value, as very few teams have 5 SP's better, and if they do (Red Sox, Phillies), they are strong contenders. Not many teams had their 30 bottom starts only be 5ish.
  5. I get $81.1M if I figure in Wolf at 10M, Hawkins at $3.5M, Bush at $4.5M, and Counsell at $2M. That is not counting Riske or Hall. And I think CV will be offered arby...but I could be wrong.
  6. I think the Marlins' way is as good as any to win titles, but is probably tough to keep many fans that way, so it's tough on the bottom line.
  7. The irony here is, this is exactly why you don't offer a guy arby if you can't afford him. The nerds on the various sites act like teams never get stuck with a guy, yet it can easily occur. ATL probably wasn't too far from having to cut him before the guarantee date in March (and pay him 1/6th of his salary) or hope he stays healthy and deal him in the season.
  8. Counsell is outstanding defensively at 3 spots, and always has a decent OBP. Comparing AA to him, other than the fact they both play baseball, doesn't make sense to me. Guy gets out 69% of the time, has no pop, and as a CF, seems unlikely to be a plus defender at 3 IF spots.
  9. No one wants to pay Soriano $7-8M, hence his value was very limited. The Crew got two years of Hawkins for that, so to say the least, it's a ton of cash, especially if he's not your closer.
  10. He has to go on the 40 unless he's sent down and removed, at which point, he'll surely be claimed. Service time is service time.
  11. Correia has said he wants to stay in SD, so maybe he'll take less to do so.
  12. If Coffey can put up a year like '09, he has oodles more value than Lowell. No sense to me at all.
  13. Cameron was a very good baserunner as well, though Gomez is likely his equal or better, based on pure speed if nothing else.
  14. With Bush and Counsell in the mix...but not Riske and Hall, I think you are accurate.
  15. SD will have oodles of teams wanting to trade for him. They may get a couple decent kids, like the price for Lopez.
  16. As i said above, I feel the Hall decision was made knowing it would not affect payroll. MA pays it, but does not let it affect his team's chances to win.
  17. And sometimes, it will be up. This gets reported, but is really a non-issue...it will be in place until it's complete. It's a penny on $10, so no one notices anyway.
  18. I had $62.1M plus 2 SP's. Now they look to be signing Wolf (or Garland) for $9M per, so they are at $71.1M...add in a reliever and the overage is $2M, as I had budgeted $3.5M for 2 guys like CV, and $500K for DiFelice, so now, they'll maybe spend $6M on those spots, I'd guess. Without Bush, $73.1M, if they offer him arby, probably $78.6M. Those numbers do not include Riske or Hall.
  19. I think many teams are hearing his name and asking about him, a classic case of clubs looking for a bargain.
  20. Cruz seems like a perfect guy to take off the 40 at some point, as he'll probably clear waivers when teams don't have a spot so readily available. He must have a great glove to be in AAA.
  21. Oeltjen seems the most likely, but not very. If Mike Jones is the best a team can do, I wish him the best. There are guys with very good AA/AAA stats who are many years younger, and some kids with great tools in A ball.
  22. Does the season go past Xmas? Maybe they have a Xmas break and then start up again?
  23. I think MLB gets about 25 cents per subscriber. Many companies were slow to add it.
  24. That's because if you are not successful 70% of the time, running is a negative. Macha knows that. No one has a problem with SB's, it's the CS's that kill you. There's also no correlation at all between SB's and runs scored...but there is always a direct one between OBP, SLG, and OXS and runs scored.
  25. How can I get excited about losing a 2nd round pick when guys can be taken well down in the draft that are 2nd round talent, like this past year? Tony Gwynn Jr was a 2nd round pick and will likely have a nice career. He is well above average for what an average 2nd round pick accomplishes. No offense to Tony Jr, but I'll risk it for a top o' the line player, be it Gonzalez or anyone else.
