  1. They could buy an investment the day before the fiscal year ends to pay Hall's salary, which would cancel out profits. The the investment (like an annuity) would pay the Brewers as needed to pay Hall's salary...that would save them money on taxes as well. Of course, I dunno if that is possible or not, but it seems logical for a large business to do. In the past, they have only counted major league salaries for their major league payroll, but they include all DL'd players salary, publicly at least. They also count the players replacing those DL'd, though they are often near minimum. I would assume the 40 man players not on the 25 man is just budgeted into minor league payroll. I believe they make more when they are on the 40, but compared to other expenses, not that much. Personally, I bet MA has told Doug to spend about $80M...but not to count Hall or Riske. That's why I expect the Opening Day payroll to be in the high $80's, with some wiggle room for the deadline.
  2. Well, the Brewers never make their budget public, and any estimates are just guesses. As for insurance, no one knows if they have insurance on Riske or not...I would assume they would, as $4.5M is not a low salary, but teams rarely make that public. As for Hall, they may have "written it off" last year (well, 2009) under "future obligations". With his money included, I would bet the 2010 team costs over $90M.
  3. I'm sure FLA would want major leauge ready prospects for Pinto...Lindstrom too, as supposedly, 6 teams are bidding.
  4. Church's career numbers are not as good as Hart's, and while it may be an effective platoon, why not just go out and get a better player for $8M?
  5. Gomez is the CF, they will have a veteran reserve, but no one who will start over him. The budget has no room in it for another starting position player either...that's why Hardy and Cameron were not options as well.
  6. A bounceback season from Parra and Bush, with any pair of FA's makes the '10 rotation above average. Of course, will we get those bouncebacks? Will they stay healthy? I don't see any problem with 3 lefties in the rotation. Good pitching is fine with either arm. Those "what ifs" make Doug's job the challenge that it is.
  7. Jackson being the highest is shocking.
  8. Sherrill isn't any better than many free options, so those would have to be extinguished first.
  9. No offense to Adam, but "internally", I assume the Brewers have no fewer than a dozen SP's and twice that many relievers on their radar. Some are top options, some are fallbacks, and some are "hoping they'll take $1M in mid-February". I agree, Gonzalez is as good as any RP, though with injury concerns (though how many pitchers are not?). We might be entering an era where good relievers can be had at $4-5M, less than half of Wolf's supposed offer. I suspect many teams will load up on bullpen guys and go with a couple $1-2M per guys in the rotation and hope to "catch lightning in a bottle".
  10. I agree, unless he's retiring, MLB Network sometime after 1/1.
  11. England and South Africa were the only top seeds not ranked in the top 6. England is #9, but they are beatable.
  12. Zaun has not played over 110 games ever. The idea they plan to play him 140 is nonsensical and shows a lack of research, in my opinion. Few teams throw anything but the top prospects (Prince, Ryan) out there to be the starter with no backup plan. Lucroy is far from a sure thing, and the idea of letting him sink or swim makes no sense. He'll be broken in slowly, and protected.
  13. The Weather Channel has only "snow showers" listed all week, which by definition is 1 inch or less. I'm a mile from DC Everest, by the way, in Schofield/Wausau. Hopefully, it will stay south, like it has the past couple years.
  14. Catalanotto played a very passable RF, so Braun obviously could as well. He has all the physical tools to be excellent out there, but at this point, just does the basics. Some of that is probably just desire, which may come as he matures. He signed a $45M deal even though he was a far below average 3B and an OK LF, so you can understand it...he's so good, just like Dunn, offensively, he's never had to work hard in the field.
  15. He's 32 at the beginning of the deal, so he's likely peaked, to say the least. $9M is 10% of payroll, or close to it, so that can be a huge drain.
  16. His defense was far higher than ever before, so that will likely revert back to like +5. I just see him as a 750 OPS 3B, which is hardly impressive. If he was a +17 on D annually, it'd be far easier to take.
  17. CV was the closer at the start of the season, and did not go into the rotation until they ran out of options.
  18. Kotteras is out of options. With the signing of Zaun, he's likely gone.
  19. I'd project him at about a 750-770 OPS. He's a solid defender, but he's getting paid for his best year, and he'll be 32-35 for the contract. Too much and too long.
  20. Knew someone in college who did that pretend stealing thing for Menard's. Said he got away with it about 75% of the time, often times taking stuff from both the store and the outside warehouse. Often times, the outside guy just waved him through, or only pretended to compare the receipt with what was in his car. He said they often would "test" him as well...let him take 2-3 bookcases instead of one, and then see if he turned them in at the next store. Often, guys would just say the store did fine and then return them for credit. When I was at TRU, an LP guy was caught in a theft thing as well...supposedly, they thought he took $200K+ in video game systems before they caught him, all from the DC.
  21. His career OPS versus LHP is 650ish...Lucroy or almost any pedestrian RH C can do that for $500K, and may have other skills as well. With McGehee available as an emergency backstop, I see absolutely no reason to have 40% of the bench filled with guys that get out 70% of the time. One thought is Mike Redmond...he's always hit LHP well, but he's also old.
  22. He hits LHP far better, and he may well struggle versus the upper echelon RHP. Resting him once every 7-10 days, usually with a top RHP on the mound, makes sense for a myriad of reasons.
  23. If you've seen Inman pitch, it's no surprise at all. He miht well make it in the bullpen, but he'll have to prove himself double with that painfully funky motion.
  24. If you've seen Inman pitch, it's no surprise at all. He miht well make it in the bullpen, but he'll have to prove himself double with that painfully funky motion.
  25. Escobar is likely to be "protected" a bit versus tough RHP. I doubt he starts over 140 games. Counsell is vital, because he gets on base, can play 3 spots very well, and hits lefty.
