  1. Pie was rushed in Chicago, he is back to his old self, playing great D (better than Jones, most believe) and hitting in BAL. He would have been a nice pickup before Gomez.
  2. They'll have a good idea who the C will be before they each take part in the tiny sample that is spring training. Each of these guys have tons of PA's and scouting reports...Doug is not going to let a bloop hit here or there decide his long-term direction at the catcher spot.
  3. Briggs, as I have often said, the only bench guy I can recall of any significance that was a reserve 2B who could not play SS or 3B was Keith Lockhart. Now, Hernan can play OF, so he might have a future as a OF who can play some 2B. However, I do not see the niche for him in MIL...he's an inexperienced backup for Gomez, he is not going to hit enough to be a LF/RF reserve, and if Heether is one IF reserve, the other one needs to be able to play SS, as Weeks nor McGehee is going to. If Counsell is back, a pair of LH bats is far from ideal as your INF reserves. Given that they will probably go with a lefty bat to back up Gomez, that's a plethora of LH bats on the bench. Not only would you like to be balanced between LH and RH, you'd also like to have some power. I just do not see a spot, barring injury. If Weeks goes down, I'd see Gamel at 3B and McGehee at 2B, until Mat is no longer around.
  4. Has the Academy ever nominated a role like Broderick had in Bueller? Looking back, he's so good, you simply cannot imagine anyone else playing the part, much like Hanks in Forrest Gump.
  5. I thought Rivera was likely to be non-tendered before this. He's a generic backup who looks awkward behind the plate, at least compared to Kendall. He does have some pop, but it comes with a low OBP.
  6. Cintron and Owens can't hit at all. The bench needs guys that can get on base. I should add they have plenty of major league AB's to prove they cannot hit. I like Luna, Scales, and Gotay, but only Luna has any SS time, and that's very limited.
  7. I have nothing against Iribarren, he is what he is, kind of a poor man's Catalanotto. However, does he have the bat to be the reserve corner OF? That's what he is if he's not Gomez's backup. He's several years older than Escobar, and they had near identical lines in AAA last year. That does not strike me as an OF bat. Several folks don't think Alcides has the bat to be a major league SS, but Hernan has plenty to play some OF? I just don't see it. I think he's best suited to be exactly what he has been...AAA depth who can fill in if someone gets hurt in the bigs. I have yet to see where he fits in MIL, very similar to the past two Septembers. Like Kottaras in BOS, he'd be better off finding a place where he'll fit in...veteran RH 2B, veteran RH CF, RH utility INF who can play SS or 3B.
  8. Always like a LH C as a backup, and he'll be cheap. Nice move for depth.
  9. Pavano fits into that second tier, who are older than you'd like and will make more money than you'd like.
  10. Comerica has favored hitters the past few years, 101-103. Jackson, at 26, and going to the NL, would probably be as good of a "breakout" candidate as you could find in MLB. I'm not sure if the Brewers have the horses to get him without Gamel.
  11. She finally reinstalled after using it in "safe" mode for a week. Is working fine as of yet. Thanks for the help.
  12. Lopez would not be happy playing 3 different spots, and 3 spots split between 4 guys is 120 games each...no one would be happy. The mere fact no team has ever done this pretty much explains it to me. As pointed out, Lopez is a very poor defender at SS, and his offense may well be affected by jumping all over the place, as well as his defense. It's one of those things that ignore the human element, just like those that want to sign several SP's to have depth...no proven SP is going to sign with a team that already has 5-6 SP's penciled into the rotation. EDIT: Can Uribe still play SS? Can Vizquel play 2B/3B? Compared to Craig, who plays all 3 spots well, that's quite a dropoff, never mind Craig is a lefty bat who always has a solid OBP. To me, the math probably would have him starting 50-60 ames in an average year, that's well worth the small price of a guaranteed 2nd year. Worse case scenario, Craig reverts back to form and hits .320/.340...take a look around at other options, that's what they'll do.
  13. Because a 3B that can hit has a lot more value than an OF. Besides, Hart and Braun are entrenched in the corner spots, so there's no opening anyway. Also, once a guy is switched, they hardly ever go back to the more difficult position, so it's all but permanent. Until a spot opens up at 1B/3B/LF/RF, they'll probably let him play 3B in AAA.
  14. Considering how good he is compared to the alternatives, a two year deal is nothing. No depth with a rookie at SS and an injury prone 2B is not a recipe for success.
  15. Players claimed on waivers are almost always pulled back, if they have any value at all. Almost every player put on waivers clears, as teams know they'll be pulled back. Vernon Wells was the first player to go through in ages.
  16. If you're thinking of abandoning the people who gave you thousands of dollars, you might want to keep it quiet until you make up your mind. At this moment, we have a tremendous athlete who has not produced, and who has considered quitting...making that public does not seem very bright.
  17. I'd love Lowe, but fair value for him would probably be 3y/$10M per. The only deal the Crew would like to rid itself of is Suppan. I don't see a match.
  18. This is the risk teams take when they draft athletes capable of playing other sports at high levels. It is difficult to imagine a guy who was considering dropping the game working hard to improve, and dedicated to said sport. As for the Scout article not being true, I think real life and common sense prevail. Brewer sounds like he should shut up and make up his mind, as talking isn't helping him at all. Do they give MLB possible draftees an intelligence test, like the NFL and Wondersomething or other? Maybe they should, as Jeffress and Brewer would have likely sucked at them, and raised numerous red flags.
  19. There would be a half-dozen teams who would love to have Lopez on a 1y deal. Unless he's got lingering injury concerns, he's an easy "yes".
  20. He has very little pop for OF. He might fit in ok as Gomez's backup, but my guess is they'll want more of a veteran in that role, a Gerut/Gross type.
  21. Agassi has a huge foundation he's likely trying to raise money for.
  22. I don't see where he fits in, he can only play 2B, he hits LH. Counsell hits LH and can play anywhere, very well. He needs to find a team with a RH 2B and a RH hitting main utility INF who can play SS and 3B well. That's a pretty tough spot. As for a "depth guy", I see him as AAA depth. Since he can't play SS, he almost needs to be looked at as an OF who can play 2B.
  23. Hernan is only a 2B, who can also play OF. No SS, only casual experience at 3B. He's not much of an IF reserve.
  24. Very young is a stretch, but he's a solid SP, to be sure, who throws very hard, and is a big guy.
