I don't think you can effectively avoid slumps. You can't tell when a guys going into one or coming out of one. I don't think analytics believes in slumps either. They are just a temporary variance in the statistical norm. However, load management gets healthy bats in the lineup and putting a guy in better match ups has proved itself time and time again. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that you shouldn't try to avoid slumps. You should try to avoid playing beat up players who can't perform to their standards in the state that they are in. They've put 11.5 mil into 3 of the 4 pieces of the CIF group and platoons project really well. If Braun plays some 1b vs LHP, Smoak will play less than he has in the past 3 years. A guy like Gyorko who is known for getting nicked up can straight platoon with Sogard at 3b and play under half a seasons worth of games well. Sogard can focus on RHP where his numbers in 2017 and 2019 have been very strong. Put all that together and you're not even at Moose money in 2020. Players in position to succeed and a work load that should keep them healthy and productive should do the trick without getting too fancy beyond that.

I think the 13th bat is being worked pretty hard in the new Brewers model. They've always been a team that platoons 1b into a cheap elite bat. I think they decided that 3b was next up with the 13th bat addition. I'm not sure this can avoid slumps, but it helps with load management and they can L/R the starting pitcher pretty severely. In theory our weak spots are Gamel (who looks pretty good on reversed splits) and Arcia. Those two put up 900 AB last year. That's not likely in 2020. As for flexibility. They've always had a lot of flexibility defensively, but right now they look to have players who can do that defensively while supplying good ABs.

I keep looking at 2 guys. I'm not concerned about the power throughout the line up. I'm not concerned with 3b batting down the order unless Gyorko is mashing LHs. I'm not concerned with depth anywhere. 2 guys can make or break this lineup. Cain, Urias. They need to get on base. Cain can not be sub 330 OBP again. His BA dropped 48 points. That can stay as is. His obp dropped an additional 22 points. He needs that back. If he can rebound to 350 range then he's the lead off guy MKE needs. Cain truly isn't a lead off guy vs LHP (OPS improves) and if Urias can also post a strong OBP number he can either bat the 9 hole vs lefties or push Cain down the lineup where he can increase the depth of the middle of the lineup. Basically these guys need: Cain 350 and Urias 350 vs LHP. If they can do that this lineup will score more runs than last year.

Pretty sure that he recently said he'd be willing to play corner infield. Of course, that could have simply been to increase his marketability. But I agree, that ship has likely sailed after signing Garcia, Smoak and Gyorko. Castellanos said he would be willing to move to firstbase later in his career after he couldn't play OF anymore. He never could to begin with. Santana's numbers in the OF are better.
-
Wasn't merely counting 3b. I think Sogard could get some extra work at other positions and I think Gyorko could play 1b if Braun is hurt or if they face a LH in a DH game. Add PHs. I set it at 440 on each for a little overflow because Gyorko will PH and Sogard won't be strictly 3b.

I guess that's where we clash. Re-tooling year? I read that as you see it as a down year and I don't see a down year team. I see a team with different connecting pieces. Different stuff but the same capabilities. If this was a rebuild year, yeah toss them in and see what sticks. No problem. This is year 3 of 5 where MKE has to contend. When you are looking to contend I feel these guys should have to force their way into the majors. I think 1-2 of them might be able to do just that. I still want to give the initial 8 spots to guys who have a better track record or have cheap upside before going to the AAA pen. Why, because having a full MLB pen and a full AAA pen of legitimate options makes it very likely that the MLB pen will be very good by seasons end. -
I'd expect big payroll playoff teams to compete for him even in arby year 3 and 4. Teams chased Miller and chased Chapman (HARD) and if Hader puts up his 4th and 5th year of dominance the Papelbon Arby record won't be the only one he breaks. I won't agree on the same names but the farm will be huge in the decision to eventually deal Hader. I don't see it happening before arby 4 offseason unless the farm can churn out some big time pen firemen. Peralta (if he gets a legitimate 2nd pitch) Brown (if starter flames out for him) Rasmussen and Kelly could all be of the type that makes Hader acceptably expendable. I'd cuff Yelich Hader Hiura and Woodruff. That's the core for the next 3 years you ride while the window is open.

Fair enough. Is a guy who is a 840 OPS with very good defense at the position worth more than 35 mil? That's an additional problem with Arenado. 35 mil is a lot of money and trading value for a guy who is fair market is not the best strategy.

Clancy, go look at Wilkerson, TWilliams, Jacob Barnes, Burch, Jay Jackson, Delois Guerra, Petricka ETC in AAA over the past 2 years. Lots of guys put up good numbers in AAA and can't be better than 4.0 ERA guys in the MLB. Devin Williams tore it up in AAA and AA last year. His arm talent is pretty impressive. He still struggled in the MKE pen. 26 guys reached base in 13.2 IP. He was lucky to be sub 4. I certainly believe someone will shake out of that group and help MKE. I'm not throwing all those guys into the fire with any confidence. It's great MKE has a lot of interesting guys down there. You don't just roll them into the MLB and expect them not to miss a beat. We've seen Barnes and TWilliams prove that wrong. We saw DGuerra look insanely over matched. Most of them are not MLB level arms. Andrews is a fun story but the guy struggles to hit 90. He's a junk ball guy and it's working now but its rare that those guys workout. Love Suter all we want, its not common. I'm rooting for him but assuming he can just jump in no problems is a great way to have a terrible pen. I was pushing Barker by mid last year. Saying it looked like something changed for him. His results were turning for the better. But counting on him and loving that he's a part of a loaded AAA pen and shuttle are totally different. If you push these guys into the pen day 1 and they fail, where do you go from there? Throw the next sacrificial lamb into the fire and hope that one doesn't get destroyed too? Really really optimistic strategy that is sprinting towards doomed. -
Nobody does. He has been a 440 PA guy from 25-29 because he's always nicked up. The back was spasms. There's a long history of tissue issues with him that have cost him time here and there. That'll continue. He's not going to play a full season. Wonder why MKE added him to platoon 3b with Sogard? The NBA calls it load management. The new 26 man roster allows you to manufacture 2 positions. I think 440 PA from both covers all of 3b and then some. I'll happily trust the MKE medical staff and DS on this one over your hunch that he's toast which is fueled by bias because you wanted someone else. People are excited about his platoon capabilities at 3b, which he plays solid defensively, in the smaller half of the platoon. No one's expecting an All Star. He's here to abuse LHP and play 3b for 65-75 starts this year. That's 3 games a week.

First off Trout is locked in until 38 at 35-36 million dollars a year. He's THE player but the value there is pretty well paid for in full. I mean what do you think his worth is 40 mil per, 50 mil per? You have to put his value pretty high to make him a valuable contract. Hader's underpaid and looking to a guy in years 35-38 is murky so negative value could swing back on the gains Trout makes in the present. Hader doesn't get there. Betts is also in that same territory so I don't see those as good examples. If you are asking if Trout make a bigger impact than Hader. Yes, significantly. He's the best player in baseball. (He's better than Yelich but I certainly wouldn't trade Yelich for Trout due to their contract value.) I'm saying that any player who is considered equal trade value to Hader on the field will not make the same impact as Hader. I'm saying that the SP prospect you get for Hader is going to effect the team era less than Hader and in a lower leverage position. Trade value for Hader will not match his worth or impact. If you get fair, you lose the deal. If you get a significant gain in value you'll likely still lose the deal. You need something bordering on stupid for the price to be worth considering. I believe the DS is willing to trade Hader rumors are cannon fodder. I don't think he's even considering it. I think we got a heck of a player and the media of other teams want him so they are making garbage up. Oh the Brewers are poor they can't afford his arby increasing, better be the lowly team that you are and sell him off to a real contender. That garbage. DS kicks every tire and turns over every stone. He's not dealing Hader, but he's smart enough to listen to people talk because the more they talk the more information they give up. Basically, we got the hot GF and everyone's looking. They might talk, they might try, it ain't happening. People talk, trolls troll, reporters chase and rumors about nothing pop up. He's tied to Yelich Hiura and Woodruff. "Cause everyday stars are far more valuable than a reliever who pitches one pitch 95% of the time and averages less than 1 inning every other day." Now I get it. You expect him to fail. Ok. As for Cory Seager 2 years Arby 2 and 3. Pass. I don’t expect him to fail. But with a position that is historically as volatile as RP you better damn sure believe the Brewers have thought about it. So along with that, and just the overall value of a RP is probably why Stearns has floated the idea of trading him to upgrade other positions. And it’s not just a media made up frenzy. Cause if the media really wanted to make something up to get attention they can just have Heyman tweet,”Brewers willing to trade Yelich.” And just watch the baseball media world explode on twitter and various sites. I would imagine this site would have a 6 page thread on it within an hour. And saying that no matter who you trade Hader for it won’t match Haders value is so completely ridiculous it’s not worth responding to. Bad writers chasing fake Yankee rumors made up by junior college kids is not proof he's actually being shopped. "Rosenthal argues it’s simply the nature of being a low payroll organization; the front office can never afford to completely shut itself out from any opportunity." That's called prospecting. Look for something within a degree of plausibility and put a flashy headline on it. "While Stearns didn’t deny the report or dismiss the idea of a Hader deal, he naturally didn’t give any hint about how much desire his club actually had in moving Hader, only saying that “I think we consider him the best reliever in baseball right now.”'' That's a brush off. Rosenthal speculating because the Brewers are a poor team, and DS not telling him off is the proof this is a thing? That's not proof of anything. That's click bait and DS didn't blast him for it. His only comment was to brush it off with "best reliever in baseball." Let's open up 47 pages of trade ideas cuz Rosenthal's saying there's a chance! RP is not a historically volatile position. Mediocre RPs are consistently volatile. Elite RPs regularly dominate for 5-6 year windows if not more. He's one of those.

A 5th OF’er (O’Neil), a broken pitcher who may not be able to start again and has to stick in the bullpen (Martinez), a middle to back end SP (Hudson) and a pitcher who hasn’t gotten above A ball who one of the 3 smartest teams in baseball just gave up on (Liberatore) is a great deal for the Rockies who have to give up a top 3 3B and top 15-25 player in MLB? 324/380/995 in Colorado. That's an elite. 265/323/799 not in Colorado. That's basically Moose the last 2 years. Those are his career numbers. He costs 35 mil a year. Moose just got 16. Yes his defense is much better but 19 million dollars better? Discuss. Frankly, I'd love them to give a ton of pieces that could be value pieces for a guy who's overpaid by roughly 5-10 mil a year. If Colorado finds any taker willing to pay value like that for him that buyer is going to end up a fool.

Because competition and depth brings about a better roster. You point to 3 guys who should be fighting to compete for the 1st seat on the shuttle. You point to 3 more who shouldn't see the majors til the end of 2020. That's why. OPTIONS you need OPTIONS. With the AAA pen MKE has... why sign relievers for longer than a 1 year deal is a valid statement. However if you make sure you push those guy into the minors you have around 15 options to fill 4-5 spots in the pen. Then you pick the best of the group. Then you have built in depth if Suter or Peralta have to go to the rotation. Until they are in the MLB producing they are nothing but a hope of a chance. The only one on that list that has the high end profile backed with consistent success and a quick move up the ladder is Rasmussen. We'll be waiting for him for 2-3 months at minimum. If any 1 of the other guys hit, its a boost but it shouldn't be counted on. -

Brewers sign Gyorko - MLB deal

Honestly the more I look into this the more baffled I get that people are mad. At ages 27-29 Gyorko produced more war than Moose did in roughly the same ABs. Gyorko had an injury wrecked 2019. Moose had another good 2019. They are roughly the same age. One gets 16/4 and the other gets 2/1? How insane is that? 31 year olds. 1/8th the cost in year 1 and no commitment for ages 32 33 34. 64 million dollar investment vs 2 million. Entirely possible that they are equally productive in 2020. Sure you feel all warm and fuzzy about Moose coming back but that's a stupid investment vs Gyorko. -

There are reasonable options between Anthony Rendon and the -0.5 WAR Jerkstore (in just 101 PA's). How many are better than his 2016-2018 self when he wasn't hurt? He put up 6.3 WAR according to fangraphs those years and was a positive grade as a defender at 3b. He put up more WAR at 27-29 than Moose did in roughly the same ABs. How many guys match that and cost 2 mil? You just wanna be mad. Honestly, I don't get how teams are this stupid. Guy lost a year due to injury and now you've written him off? Yet Moose, because he didn't lose a year to injury is worth 16/4? That's a huge difference based on what have you done for me lately.

Top Brewers Prospects by Position
TJseven7 replied to Harold Hutchison's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
With his pitch mix, Burnes could be a starter. Would that be a better use of him? Will he rebound from 2019? Or is he a brief wonder that everyone has figured out? Lots of questions. Easy answers. He's a starter. No idea. He wasn't figured out, it was location and mental. The stuff was still nasty when he was flickering on but he was usually off. -
