  1. You need to change your name on this site to The Raptor or Brent Suter. Awesome story about youth pitching! No need to be a jerk.
  2. I reluctantly think this is right. If villar bats 6th I wouldn't throw up.
  3. Still think Suter would be the exact reason you start piggy back starts. His 1st time through numbers are so impressive. I hate to compare anything mlb with my youth pitching days but all star tourney coach starts me. I literally asked him if he was ok because I had the worse stuff of all the guys on the team. Team we played was incredible but i was control soft junk and those dudes swung at the ball like they wanted to hit it to the moon. A couple innings of slamming bats on the plate after trying to crush a circle change that bottomed out and then comes the 4th inning they settled in and it was time to get me out of there. Our stud goes in and it was a bugs bunny cartoon, we got clobbered. Soft control junk slowed them down because it was strange. Soft tossing strange tempo control is only different for awhile. They see it a few times they barrel up. Suters numbers scream that, I find it funny I experienced the same thing a few times. I love the dude. I think his different approach will always rattle people for a few innings but he needs to change things up after that or they'll adjust ingame. 3-4 innings in a piggyback especially after a righty could be brilliant though. To me he's a guy with 2 tricks up his sleeve and he pulls them both out immediately. There's nothing beyond that to go to when the first look stops being novel.
  4. With all due respect to woodruff his milb numbers aren't close to burnes. The cobb sub 50 stuff only makes sense if all the teams want to stick it to tb for some reason. Just offer 64/4 and get him here.
  5. 12.5k/9 for his career and 14.9k/9 last season. For a RP that's pretty elite. you get excited when a guy goes above 9k/9. Barnes and Williams haven't even touched that level in the minors at best 11k/9. Kneble has practically been there from the beginning. Minors as well. I do believe Hader and Peralta have.
  6. Hader and possibly Peralta with williams barnes houser in training. I think you are overrating closer. The pen needs a 3.5 era throughout. With 2 sub 3 era anchors.
  7. We've seen some closers net a pretty hefty trade package. I don't think trading him for instant impact is prudent. I dont think trading him today is wise but if we aren't contending at the trade deadline I would. Next offseason I would. I'd be looking to stock the farm back up though. Granted for that to be wise we need to see Williams or Barnes make a step up or Peralta hit the pen guns blazing.
  8. Pggyback guerra/suter and miley/yo? Guerra Suter I can see. Guerra through 4 was fine last year. Suter through 3 kept them off balance. Miley Yo just seems like 2 guys piggy backed just because. Kinda what I was thinking. Miley and Gallardo were signed with intentions of giving them a shot to pitch in the MLB again. Piggy backing them might be just the ticket. The 4 I could stomach. I'd be really really excited to see woodruff burnes peralta in june if I had to watch that 5 spot too many times. I'm staring at the make up of this team and I just cant get excited about it as is. Cobb would make such a huge difference even if we got last years cobb. Just by stabalizing another 180ip. The 4.5 offensive runs per game I assume will improve but I'm trying to sort out the staff some way that I like it. The guerra suter 7 inning duo could be solid. Could 4.0 7ip. I had woody/suter. I could do Guerra Suter. That 5 is brutal though. I can't trust miley yo. Woodruff I'd prefer there. Anderson Davies Chacin Guerra/Suter Woodruff Knebel, hader, albers, logan, jeffress, barnes, yo (junk long) Why would we make Miley the 5 over Woodruff? The last two for miley were soo bad. Honestly if you could tell me we get 28 year old miley and his 4.4 era 32 starts and 190 ip... I'd take it easily... but I dont see why him and yo should revert. It's pathetic but I would kill for another chacin. We had 294.1 starting innings by guys who pitched a 5.4 era in 61 starts and didnt make it 5ip. But the more I think about it the more I feel and dread, guerra/suter 4 with miley as the 5 and yo as a traditional long man, is how we break camp. Try the retreds until they fail. Then move on to woodruff burnes peralta and possibly nelson. With how bad our 5 can be I don't see why we wouldn't just let woodruff work his way into the ranks.
  9. Pggyback guerra/suter and miley/yo? Guerra Suter I can see. Guerra through 4 was fine last year. Suter through 3 kept them off balance. Miley Yo just seems like 2 guys piggy backed just because.
  10. I still think we could see suter woodruff and burnes this year and needing 4.7 era from them would allow some leeway. I'd expect better from Miley... something about his absurd walk rate makes me think he coukd crack 5.0 era but even if he starts well I'd expect a garza like fall off.
  11. Well if woodruffs a 4.4 the 5th spot can be a 5.0 era and it shouldn't lead to a weaker pitching staff. Cobb would all but ensure a better team era.
  12. Do you think him and woodruff could combine for 64 starts 320 ip at a 4.7 era?
  13. I have zero issues starting him every game at 2b vs lhp. I actually said last year when Villar was struggling that perez should get 2b often and felt him not batting lead off was an added plus for the offense. Felt it was better without villar leading off.
  14. Had some fun with numbers Starters era 4.1 in 2017 Pen era 3.85 in 2017 Team era 4.0 Anderson Nelson Davies Suter 3.44 era 101 starts 578.1ip...ip/start 5.726 The rest 61 starts 294.1 ip 5.40 era... 4.83 ip/start Anderson 33 starts 5.65 ip/start 186ip ... assumed 3.25 era (.5 r increase on last 203.1) Davies 33 starts 5.8 ip/start 191 ip.... assumed 4.0 era (like his last 2) Chacin 32 starts 5.6 ip/start 179 ip... assumed 4.0 era (like last year & career avg) 68 runs allowed, 85 ra, 80 ra. 233 runs from 1-2-3 Leaves 64 starts... and 316.2 ip... 4.95 ip/starts and 165 runs allowed to match last years starters production. Can the stuff left cover 64 starts at 4.69 era averaging 5 ip per start? Side note: knebel hader 2.5 era, albers 3.0, jeffress barnes logan williams suter 4.0... looks like a pen thats 3.5 era... .35 lower than 2017 which would have dropped team era under 3.9... even with cubs and nats.
  15. Those options could be an improvement on the 5.4 era posted by non anderson davies nelson suter starters (61 starts 294.2 ip) but don't confuse that with what cobb (even at the 3.6 he was last year) would do for this staff.
  16. I just want us to toss 60/4 at cobb. I think that could be low balling by a ton if his split/change comes back.
  17. 6 aav... below mikolas, chacin, and well below chatwood. Worse than Garcia. Nearly what pineda got and he's hurt! For Lynn... if im him I'm not only not accepting it, I'm done listening to offers from mn. That's bad. Im stunned some lowpayroll team hasn't jumped into a buyers market and put some front loaded 2 year deals out there hoping to sell high on the 2nd year. I never really looked into lynn. Wasn't crazy about him from the start. But 24/2 with a 2019 2 mil buyout is a steal. 11 and 13. Either 12 avv or 13/1. Not half that.
  18. Perez is a lock. Might be Counsell's favorite player. He's a much better hitter than he showed last year. Don't disagree but the CCs favorite player could also be said about sogard. 8 man pen leaves a 4 man bench C thames perez sogard? Wouldn't quite call him a lock yet.
  19. Knebel is regressing... he allowed a run. Uh-oh! #blue Truth: Hate seeing him walk anyone. Ps: perez really wants to stick around. Really nice start for him.
  20. All depends on his added length to starts. He was brilliant the first 3 innings last year. As starts wore on he wore out or was figured out. We've said 8 man pen. I look at it like Anderson 5.5 ip, davies 6 ip, chacin 5.5 ip, woody/suter 8 ip and fluff #5 around 5 ip Leaves a 7 man pen who gets off days (hopefully) when woody suter R/L combo. Woody leaves the game tied or losing, suter pitches til its a save opp or done. Woody leaves the game leading big, let suter try to close it out. Woody leaves and its a small lead... suter gets 2+ with a quick hook in the 8th. Suter's unlikely to last 6 at high quality. But he's also too good to use after some guy flamed out as an innings eater. Jeffress Barnes and whomevers the last arm in the pen can pick those up. Fun part is if you really wanted to keep him stretched you could have him go 3 then have him go simulate 2 more before calling it a day.
  21. He had 14 starts and he was a 3.75 era in them. I'm not saying he's anderson davies nelson. Merely saying he was the only one besides those 3 who didn't suck. I truly want him to piggy back woody in a 4-5 3-4 ip tandem. Making the 4 starter a 7-9 inning eating venture could help the pen. Woodruff 128-160 ip, suter 96-128 ip. I'd expect close to 250 ip from the 2. I think suter is real good 1 time through the order. I'd prefer to use that instead of making him a typical long man who eats garbage innings.
  22. Anderson nelson davies suter 578.1 ip 3.44 era... 101 starts 5.73ip per The rest 294.2 ip 5.40 era...61 starts 4.83 ip per start The rest set a brutally low bar..
  23. Thought the same thing but being serious. Not what I want but more along the lines of Milone nonsense. Not like he's battling for the 5 spot vs anyone. Suter can long man... yo guerra aren't good either... wilkerson can stay down. Well if he can be a 4.8 like Garza it shouldn't kill us... sigh... cobb please.
  24. I don't get how you think braun who is worth some of his 56mil owed is worse than kemp who is worth none of the 43 mil he is owed. Nobody want that kemp deal. Its lighting 43 mil on fire. Brauns worth more than the 13 mil differenxe over the next 3. I'd argue by at least 11 mil if not more. Basically you have two options. Get nothing for the $20 in your hand or get a $15 hat for the $25 in your other hand. You just hand over the $20?
  25. Mm1ceguy good layout idea. Target staff era 3.8 Target runs per game 4.9 (how they scored so poorly in comparison to texas and boston, no idea) 2018 Cobb 60/4 to put the train in motion. Anderson 3.2 cobb 3.6 davies 4.0 chacin 4.0 woodruff 4.6 straight average 3.9 Pen knebel hader 2.5 albers 3.0 jeffress logan barnes williams 3.7 average suter 4.0 straight average 3.35. Staff 3.7 until nelson or deadline trade... fair? Need 4.8 runs per game to be a 90+ win team. 2019 Nelson back at 3.4 Anderson 3.2 nelson 3.4 cobb 3.6 woodruff 4.3 Burnes 4.5 staff at 3.8 Trade Davies Hader 2.5 albers peralta 3.0 barnes williams 3.5 houser chacin suter 3.8 average 3.36 Trade knebel Staff shade under 3.7 until deadline trade? Need 4.8 runs for a 90+ win team That's what I'm after. Set the top, set reasonably low expectations for talent cutting their teeth. Deal out the extra so you can stay right at the +1.1 threshold while restocking the farm. If you get blasted by injuries you lose. That's always the case. It can kill windows. If your guys flop, well you dont have the horses. If anderson sucks davies ain't saving us. Simply hit expectations and 90 wins is there to be had if not more. If guys surprise or flare you are headed towards a special season... but the goal is to consistently have that chance. Remember after Giles houston's pen was fairly miserable. Our pen would have been a great deal better with 7 guys like hughes. Albers is that type of guy, and we got him for very little cost. Swarzak we acquired for next to nothing. Jeffress was absolutely fine as a 3.65 again got him for nothing. Right now we have 2 anchors. Knebel Hader. Is it impossible to think peralta barnes or williams could be one by this time next year and make knebel expendable... no. You dont need tons of elite talent to win 90 games. You have to be deep enough so that you aren't playing garbage. Knebel Davies sure can help you get there but you can do it just as easily by having a talented deep 25 man roster. That talented deep roster can include a good number of cheap free agent add pieces like albers jeffress logan chacin... none of which "move the needle" except that they are steady and take the spot of garbage that would mitigate the value that your stars... anderson nelson cobb hader gain you. We didn't miss the playoffs because we didn't have talent. We missed because we played a lot of garbage. Adding yelich cain bolstered the offensive talent dramatically. The staff simply needs to not be a dumpster fire that they were behind anderson nelson davies, knebel hughes and part years from hader swarzak. The bottom dragged the top down. That can't happen going forward. In a surprise rebuild year sure. Not now. The pen looks far better already so thats a good sign. Going from a 3.85 pen to a 3.35 pen would lower a 4.1 era staff to 3.9 team era. So when they say they are comfortable with their staff, and they expect to score a lot of runs it could be honest. Anderson 3.2 davies chacin 4.0 woodruff 4.4 and all the other pieces adding up to 4.8 with a pen near 3.35 needs an offense that scores 5 runs a game to be a playoff team. Their analytics are surely far more complex. But this rumidial view makes sense and could be a soft look at their hard numbers stating the same approach.
