  1. I kind of wish they had Collins and Mears back instead of Zerpa and Matos/Perkins,/Jones
  2. Trading veterans for prospects and shuffling major league pieces in lateral moves tends to do it, unless the front office beats the odds and hits way more often than they don’t.
  3. Bauers is alright as a bench player: has some power, can play a few spots defensively, runs ok. He just shouldn’t be playing everyday. The bigger criticism is the Brewers’ bungled 40 man roster with 11 OFers and no true first basemen outside Bauers. Plus, more than half those outfielders bring the same skill profile.
  4. Oh gosh, here we go…. Wiemer went 8 for 10 in the first series of the year. He’s 7 for 34 since (.205). Nothing to see here
  5. Patrick tops out in the lower 90s he’s gotta hit his spots to be effective, just been missing tonight
  6. I think you’re right. He’s too small and weak to be any good but after last year I was hopeful he was going to prove us wrong
  7. At least Ortiz didn’t hit last year either. Frelick is easily the biggest disappointment on the team so far.
  8. For Jeremy Pena? No. The Astros are not motivated to trade him, he already makes 10 million dollars/season and is a free agent after 2027. Those are not the types of players the Brewers historically have traded for. Pratt is going to get every chance to be the longterm SS and soon. Because of that, it seems very unlikely they’d trade minor league depth to acquire a SS to bridge the gap for 5 months or less. Too many teams are playing competitive baseball right now, so the chance somebody trades major league assets away in April or May is nil. Even at the deadline, recent Brewers history suggests they’re most likely to improve the overall talent of their roster by acquiring better players than those who currently occupy the bottom spots of the 26 man roster, than a big swing for the fences move.
  9. Sure it makes sense that the Brewers have a need at SS but that’s about it. If the Astros flounder and choose to rebuild, they’re not going to include cash to move their valuable players. Secondly, teams simply don’t often trade their top tier prospects anymore, so cash is not likely going to persuade anyone to depart from that path anyways. The other difference is Adames arrived with 3+ years of control. Peña has 1+ season. It looks good in theory, but the teams/situation don’t really match up for this kind of move
  10. Or an is already making 10 million dollars this season and presumably will get a multi million dollar raise next year in arbitration. I don’t think the Brewers would really be interested in trading some of their minor league depth to add that kind of salary commitment.
  11. I guess the bullpen struggles were a little overblown 4 IP 1H 2BB 4K
  12. …. And potentially helps sell tickets to early season games that are normally a tougher sell by having teams like Toronto come to town who don’t play in Milwaukee often.
  13. There is the problem with Metrics. bWAR has Burnes at 3.9 and Ortiz and Hall combined at 3.9. So by their model it’s been a wash and both Brewers at or near replacement level so far this season. If it was as simple as looking at players who left and ones that arrived and presuming a connection, one could stretch these arguments out infinitum. The point is: a team like Milwaukee is never going to be a player in today’s free agency so the veteran for prospects move is essential, and this one at least is looking like they swapped out their best player and the return didn’t hurt the team, but it didn’t really better them either which when this is the lifeline of your team, kind of sucks.
  14. No. Just because Steve Cohen is a brash, expects to win and is visible on the socials does not mean he is “meddling” owner. There are not any reports he overrules the GM, dictates who plays and who doesn’t or otherwise micro-manages the team, etc. Further, to have played .318 baseball so far is clearly an anomaly and not reflective of the talent they have in the roster which is quite good (Soto, Bichette, Lindor, Peralta, McLean, etc). In 2024, the Mets went 9-19 on May, spent the entire season out of first place, yet won 89 games and lost the NLCS 4-2. They’re going to be fine. I know as Brewers fans who were spurned by David Stearns for the big market glitzy New York, his quick failure there would be extra sweet, but he’s not getting fired this year short of them losing 100+ games.
  15. Maybe you’re right (though Bodine was flipped to get Shane Baz). As someone else mentioned, if the best they could get for the final year of team control of a Cy Young winner is DL Hall and Joey Ortiz, then they probably should have kept Burnes and taken the comp pick when he rejected a QO after 2024. Because at this rate, Hall who is arbitration eligible, could be non-tendered after the season, and Ortiz is already a just a place holder for more highly touted talent.
  16. The Mets will go on a tear at some point. They’re not going to play .318 baseball all year. Nor does being 8 games out in April mean much. There’d have to be an unprecedented crash for Stearns to get fired in year 3.
  17. Maybe, Perkins was a gold glove finalist two years ago. That’s his claim to fame, he’s fungible goods other than that footnote IMO.
  18. No. Burnes and comp pick for Hall, Ortiz and competitive balance pick (which historically have low rates of producing quality major leaguers)
  19. My point is they could DFA all 3 of them tomorrow and it’s solid odds none of them get claimed, so what’s the point of a pecking order?
  20. Orioles additionally got a comp pick for Burnes rejecting QO. Currently their #4 prospect for what that’s worth.
  21. Whatever. They’re both little guys who hit the ball on the ground too much. It’s silly to assume to assume one is going through a rough patch and the other is just bad at hitting. Especially when Ortiz has a significantly higher hard hit percentage
  22. It’s like discussing pecking order for players who didn’t make the team out of ST and Perkins hasn’t done anything to change that with his play. As Chourio, Vaughn and Yelich return to health he’ll be shipped back to AAA along with Matos and Jones.
  23. But maybe fans should be more lenient towards a batter who is closer to passable at his position, and direct their fury towards a player who is miscast as a corner OFer.
  24. Tough crowd. Realize Ortiz is the better hitter than Frelick right now, and there’s no equal outrage or calls for Sal to be demoted, benched, etc. The Brewers at least have options in the OF besides wasting outs on Frelick right now. Which isn’t to defend Ortiz but difference between him washing out of the majors and having a lengthy career as a defensive SS/utility player is a much smaller step (Orlando Arcia 10 years .239/.292/.369, Alcides Escobar 14 years .258/.295/.345) than Sal Frelick continuing long term as a starting OFer with a .698 career OPS and scuffling mightily at the plate.
  25. They really need his bat for now enough to overlook he is striking out at Hiura level proportions (39%)
