  1. it's getting tough to keep all our AAAA-caliber middle infielders straight.
  2. How about Franklin activated and DFA'd? They need to create a 40-man and a 25-man spot, though. If they dump Zagurski, it leaves the pen short handed. They've already been operating with a hand tied behind their back for a week.
  3. Syndergaard is the more exciting name, but DeGrom is the better, more consistent pitcher. I hope he's the target.
  4. That is interesting. I imagine Happ is the target, as I can't imagine they'd sell low on Stroman. Sanchez is a possibility too.
  5. I agree. The system has solid depth with good prospects at all levels, but it is lacking top-flight guys. Part of that is, I think, the team does a crap job of hyping their prospects, especially at the lower levels. But part, too, is that they have a lot of solid guys, but few game changers ... and those in the system that do have game-changing ability (like Ray and Gatewood) haven't developed as quickly as we would like, which has made them lose a bit of prospect luster. Hiura is one of the few that is showing that type of ability, but he also has warts with questionable defense and athleticism, along with durability concerns. If he is the centerpiece for someone like DeGrom or Thor, or some other top starter who is controllable for 2+ more seasons, while it would be tough to swallow, I think you do it.
  6. I was really hoping either Santana or Phillips would establish themselves as the RF of the future this season, but alas ... I love Phillips's defensive acumen and energy, but if he can't make contact, it's going to be tough for him to make an impact at the MLB level. He's only 24 though, so there is hope. Santana is much the same story, although he has a very good MLB season already on his resume. I think he profiles for more power than Phillips, albeit with similar swing-and-miss tendencies. The performances of both of those guys have been two of the team's biggest disappointments (along with Arcia) this season. Who would have thought at this point last year that Houser would end up looking like the second more valuable piece from that deal? Baseball is a funny game.
  7. I'm hopeful that Saladino can be that guy. He looked good in limited action before getting hurt, but it really wasn't enough action to draw any conclusions from. I think how he looks over the next couple weeks will go a long way toward determining whether a SS is pursued via trade. I love Villar's skillset, but I agree that it is time for him to take a seat for Miller. I've liked Miller's approach so far at the plate, and whie his defense hasn't been great, he hasn't been a butcher out there either.
  8. A controllable TOR type will require a minimum of Hiura and Burnes. There is no way around that on the minor league level. I’m assuming Hader is untouchable for anyone not named Trout. Yep, you are right. I'm totally ok with that. This team is a contender right now. If you don't go for it now, when do you? Personally, Im getting sick of the "5 year plan". Other than 2008 and 2011, the "5 year plan" has taken 30.
  9. Shaw was incredibly streaky last year with no injuries. I think its the same thing this year. He'll get hot again at some point. He is who he is. He can look horrible one week, then put up superhuman numbers the next. Just gotta roll with him.
  10. Wouldn't surprise me to see a huge move for a controllable ace-type. I mean, he's already alluded that he wasn't going to be in the market for a middle rotation guy. They have 7-8 of those already. A couple bats wouldn't surprise me either. I don't think Machado, but a catcher and a middle infielder wouldn't surprise me.
  11. You want Santana and his electric .273 average in AAA, along with no power, back up? Leave him there until he discovers his power stroke again. He's utterly worthless without it.
  12. Hell, throw Sogard in there. Give him a highlight before he's dumped for Saladino in a few days.
  13. When you run a seven men pen, it is hard to hide more than 1 guy from leverage situations if you have a few tight games in a row. Pen should be at 8 ... always. Which brings us back to carrying the "day-to-day" boo-boo guys on the active roster argument that we've talked circles about. This team seems hamstrung by low numbers at least once a week. That just doesn't seem right.
  14. Pulling Chacin at the point they did was questionable too. He could have come out for the 6th. Pitch count was low.
  15. I can't help but think Zagurski was called up because he'd be easily dumpable. But then he gets put in the game in a tight spot? Come on guys. I know you need spots eventually for Miley and Davies, but don't sacrifice wins now for that. Put the best team on the field, and figure things out later.
  16. Zagurski proving he was a better call-up than Ramirez or Torres-Costa. Come on Stearns, stop hamstringing Counsell by calling up inferior talent.
  17. Thames Yelich Aguilar Shaw Braun Miller Kratz Arcia Guerra Cool seeing Miller at 2B, but I think I'd rather see him at SS. Nice to see Shaw back in the lineup.
  18. No kidding! I don't know what else Ramirez has to do to earn a call-up. Zagurski is about as blah as you're gonna get for a lefty reliever. Maybe they are just looking for a guy they can call up for a few days until his spot is needed on the 40-man, without having to worry about him getting claimed on waivers. That's the only way this makes sense.
  19. Houser was sent out after yesterday's game. I wonder where the ball will fall on the "reliever roulette" wheel for tonight's game? Lopez again? There is a spot open on the 40-man. Could we see Burnes?
  20. I would think about trading one of Demi Orimoloye, maybe Lutz, maybe Webb, Maybe Phillips or maybe Ponce. The rest of those guys aren't worth Dietrich by himself, let alone as part of a package. No way on Burnes, Erceg or Brown.
  21. Interesting. He is versatile, which seems to be something Stearns likes. With two years of control after this year, I imagine the cost is going to be significant.
