  1. I think you'll mostly see Cain, Yelich, and Hiura 1,2 and 4 on most days. The rest will be mixing and matching depending on match ups, health, etc.
  2. I originally wanted him to be re-signed. Adding Lauer, Anderson, and Linblom made that unlikely. It will be interesting to see what he gets compared to Brett Anderson. In a vacuum I probably prefer Gio to Anderson on the field, but if Gio is twice the price it would explain why Stearns went a different direction.
  3. The fan in me hates this. I've been a big Thames fan since he came to the Brewers. I like him and I was stilling holding out hope he'd re-sign (still don't really agree with the buy out if the plan was to just bring in a slightly cheaper version of him though). I'm not mad about this off season. I think they could be good next year. Just going to be weird rooting for so many new guys while players I really liked like Davies and Thames we shipped out for roughly the same, but cheaper versions of themselves. Stearns said recently that he thinks fans mostly care about winning. I agree, but when you become fans of certain players too it sucks when the off season went like this. It's like being a Packers fan in the Thompson era. Now, having said all that... Smoak might complement this roster a little better than Thames does at a cheaper price. The move is fine and I'm glad they aren't counting on Braun needing to start 80+ games at first base.
  4. My guess is they will bring in a veteran catcher for camp for sure. An Erik Kratz type. They'll probably also bring in a SP like they did with Miley and Tomlin the past couple years. These guys aren't completely uninteresting and might be minor league- NRI types: Chad Bettis Danny Salazar JC Ramirez Tyson Ross
  5. After letting this one marinade a little bit I think this signing is fine. Obviously I wouldn't expect anyone to get too high or too low based off of a signing of a player like Sogard. The price is fair for a part time player coming off a strong year. The current infielders on the roster were all right handed so a lefty with some positional flexibility makes sense. I am not ready to draw and grand conclusions on what this means for Arcia and Urias. The 26 man roster can fit all of them plus Arcia and Urias could be optioned. Neither has proven they're worth every day at bats either so Sogard complements them. I still think they need at least 1 more bat for the corner infield, likely at third base. The more mid level signings we see like Sogard and Garcia the more I feel like we will be looking at Todd Frazier or Asdrubal Cabrera add instead of something more high profile. It's really too bad that the Cubs would never trade Bryant to the Brewers.
  6. He's going to divulge all of the Brewers secret sign stealing strategies.
  7. Option-able corner infielder. Makes sense. However, if he's the primary move at third base it will obviously be unacceptable.
  8. I'm surprised that the plan is for Garcia to primarily play LF and not RF. I kinda figured they'd move Yelich to LF on days Braun is not in the OF, but perhaps they want to just leave Yelich alone because he will play almost every day as long as he is healthy.
  9. Am I bad at math or does this only add up to $19.5mm guaranteed?
  10. So I was looking at their current depth and how many guys they had start a game last year and I sorta had a sinking feeling come over me... I think they may be done adding SP on guaranteed deals. Last year they had 11 guys start (it was actually 12, but i'm discounting the Jacob Barnes opener start). 3 of those guys- Gio, Lyles, and Pomeranz were acquired in season. Right now they have 8 guys who could reasonably start for them for any stretch of time in Anderson, Linblom, Lauer, Woodruff, and Houser as the initial rotation. Burnes, Peralta, and Suter as the first line of depth. Faria is here too, but who knows how long he will last on the 26 man roster. I assume the Brewers will need to make another Lyles like addition mid season, but that's basically your rotation depth. I hope I'm wrong, because I'm nervous about this group. Maybe most of that fear is because we don't have the familiarity we had going into last season with guys like Davies, Anderson, and Chacin all being relatively stable veterans complementing the 3 young guys. We will almost certainly see a Tomlin like signing, but other than that this might be the group they have going into opening day.
  11. I hope they're aiming higher for third base, but he wouldn't be the worst addition.
  12. Solid deal for the Reds. Could do a lot worse than Miley as your 4th or 5th best SP.
  13. Braun only started 113 games in 2019, 99 in 2018, and 99 in 2017. Probably reasonable to assume he starts roughly 100 again in 2020 even if he's mostly healthy.
  14. I had mentioned Colin McHugh as a potential free agent target in a thread a while back and I had actually forgotten about him. He had two IL stints with elbow issues last year. He ended the season on the IL and his throwing program was shut down in September with continued pain. If he is healthy I still would love him as a pick up. He would probably slot into the bullpen like you suggested, but could provide some rotation depth as well. He did struggle as a starter last year, but was downright dominant as a reliever. 33.2 IP and a 2.67 era (3.42 fip). If he's healthy, he could actually pretty much wrap up the Brewers offseason pitching acquisitions.
  15. I think Urias/Arcia are your SS regardless. 3B and 1B are still questions in my mind. I think you're probably right, but if they were able to swing a deal for Lindor, Correa, or Corey Seager you'd probably play them at ss (urias could very well be a part of a trade of this magnitude). Obviously this would be tough to pull off. Third base remains the clearest path to add an impact bat. I think we could see a left handed bat added on a small deal to complement Braun? at first, but that probably isn't going to be the type of impact player i'm hoping for.
  16. This probably isn't the cleanest fit, but it works if they're willing to play Braun at first base 80+ games. I actually thought Braun looked pretty decent in limited time at first base in 2018. I still think the Brewers need to add a big bat and now the only obvious places would be either SS or 3b.
  17. I would be ecstatic with either, but I would lean Donaldson
  18. This is just my read on the situation, but it's possible the Brewers slightly misread the market. They probably cut ties with all of these guys like Anderson and Thames to give themselves maximum payroll flexibility with the plan of re-signing Grandal or targeting one of the other top tier free agents like Rendon or Donaldson. Thames' net option for $6.5mm was probably $1-1.5mm too high based on the past couple off seasons. I think he still makes sense even if it's at the same price of the option they declined if they aren't able to acquire a high caliber FA or take on a big contract through trade.
  19. On the surface a bb% over 10% is a good place to start. BABIP tends to fluctuate more than bb% so that's an important components to sustainably high OBPs. Beyond that, I'd look for a high contact% on swings in the strike zone coupled with a low chase rate. This gives more context to the bb% as a player who isn't just passive, but is also aggressive at swinging at hittable pitches.
  20. You forgot Lindblom. IMO Faria was so horrible he doesn't make the team and he is out of options. Stearns has indicated they would like Suter and Peralta to be in the pen. I can't imagine how Burnes doesn't start the year in AAA. Both quantity and quality are severely lacking right now. It's still only Dec. 13th and I believe Stearns has more surprises up his sleeve Whoops lol. I was looking off their 40 man on their website and totally brain farted on Lindblom. I still think the overall point still stands about where they are rotation depth wise. Could use 1 minor league signing and 1 major league signing.
  21. Brewers got 87.1 IP from Gio in 2019 and 80.2 from Miley in 2018. I feel like Anderson is essentially filling that role from the past 2 years.
  22. $5mm + 2 more in possible incentives. per buster olney
  23. I agree the Brewers need to add some additional starting pitching, preferably someone with a little more health certainty than Anderson. SP depth currently: Anderson Burnes Faria Houser Lauer Peralta Suter Woodruff That's really only 8 guys unless you want to consider Supak too. I'm also not even confident Faria will last very long on the 40 man roster once we make it into the season. I think they probably need 1 minor league signing like a miley or tomlin from the last couple years and another guy you'd hope to get 25+ starts from.
  24. Could be useful. I wouldn't count on him being healthy to make 20+ starts though. They need some starting pitcher depth though so this will do for now.
  25. I'm not sure any of them are perfect fits. My favorite of the group is Marte, but i'm not sure the brewers will match up well with the Pirates in a trade. Castellanos probably requires a lot more of Braun at 1b than i'd expect. Ozuna I'm not interested in. Dickerson probably fits the best. Not necessarily an every day player, but could be one if any of Braun, Cain, or Yelich goes down. Lefty bat who is still serviceable vs lefties. His injury last year was a fractured foot so I'm not sure if there will be any lingering effects, but if the medicals check out he would probably be my top target if the Brewers. Puig would probably be second. He is coming off a somewhat down year so maybe he'd be looking for a 1 year deal (a brewers special). reverse platoon splits and could move Yelich back over to LF which would be desirable. EDIT: JD Martinez from the Red Sox is interesting if they're looking to shed salary. He's the type of bat you could risk the big salary and bad glove on.
