  1. If a pitcher failed on his 2 attempts at a pickoff, wouldn't the runner just start running to the next base as soon as the pitcher stepped on the rubber? There would be no way to stop the runner since the pitcher couldn't throw over or a balk would be called. The pitcher couldn't quick pitch because he wouldn't come to a complete stop in the stretch and that's also a balk.
  2. Mitchell looks overmatched; 3 for 24 with 13 Ks so far. Time to get a look at Freilick who is hot at Nashville.
  3. Tellez is just fine as the Brewers' 1B. He is outperforming his contract and fits perfectly within the Brewers' budget. Of full time 1B he's 5th in HRs, 8th in RBIs, and middle of the pack in OPS. Is he a Freeman or Goldschmidt, no, but they can win with him. Offensively 3B is a huge problem. CF is a huge problem. Catcher is a huge problem. Bullpen has become a problem to a lesser extent. Stearns needs to fix those long before he needs a new 1B.
  4. One run with 23 Ks in 18 innings! Pathetic!
  5. !B has NOT been the problem. Tellez has done more than enough to be a keeper for next year. He's going to have around 30 HRs, 85-90 RBIs, and has an 802 OPS. His defense isn't bad. Yes they could do better, but 1B is way down the list of needs. 3B-CF-Bullpen-LF-DH-C-2B all are more problamatic. They are stuck with Yelich in LF. Hiura's performance of late may be the answer at DH. CF & 2B may come from internal candidates. 3B/C/Pen may have to come from trades. As far as the other things, I have no idea what you mean by "spend fairly". The Brewers are about average on costs at the stadium. Their TV contract is one of the smallest in all MLB and attendance is down 16%. According to Statistica the Brewers have the 6th lowest team value in MLB. If you go by % of value, the Brewers are outspending the Dodgers, Cubs, Giants, Yankees, and Red Sox.
  6. Actually their $132M payroll this year is higher in comparative dollars than their 2012 payroll of $97+M (CPI calculator). And no, Milwaukee could not afford to be a top ten payroll (around $180M) now days.
  7. I think you have to get out the proverbial fork, they're done. Watching Rogers completely ignore the tying run on 2B and have that runner steal third standing up w/o a throw, is just unforgivable. Then watching the $26M man (Yelich) whiff with a runner in scoring position in extra innings and then commit an error to let a run score, is beyond frustrating. Seeing the Brewer OFs, especially Yelich, playing at medium depth with the winning run on 3B and less than 2 outs is mind boggling. And the losses keep coming.
  8. I don't think Stearns is going to re-sign Wong. Urias' real value is at 2B. I think the fall-back plan is putting Turang at 2B and returning Urias to 3B, but that might be a down grade over this year. In order to improve the club, Stearns needs to find a decent 3B and Turang goes to the Peterson role as a super utility guy. I too believe Peterson is going to command too much money for the Brewers on the open market next year.

  10. McCutchon has been hot (10/37 in Aug). Put him in CF and let Hiura be the DH against RH. I think he could be the spark. Taylor can go in CF sending Cutch to LF in the later innings.
  11. Good catch. I didn't mean to trade both. The Brewers can't remain competitive if they trade both. Obviously Burnes has the most value and I believe he would bring quite a haul if traded to the right team. Trading Woodruff could fill a hole and bring a young SP. I wish the Brewers had the money to keep both for 4-5 more years, but baseball reality says no way.
  12. For next year: Decline Wong's ($8.5M w/ $2M buyout) $10M option. Let Omar ($5M), McCutchen ($8.5), Peterson ($1.8M), and Rogers go. With Hader's and Cain's salary gone, it should provide more than enough to sign a decent FA (Drury?)and pay all the arby guys. Put Urias at 2B where his greatest value lies. Hiura becomes the DH. Bring up one of the young CFs from AAA and let Taylor be the 4th OF. Turang (2B-SS-CF) takes Peterson's place as the super utility guy along with Brosseau. Caratini becomes the main catcher and it's time to see what Feliciano can do as the back-up. Stearns has to make the tough decision on Woodruff and Burnes. Both would be highly desirable with two years remaining before FA.
  13. Ashby is like a lot of young guys, he lacks control both in the zone and out. However with Ashby it's more with his fastball than his off speed stuff. He doesn't have the ability to throw his fastball up when he needs to or to locate down and in on a righty. Like the article said, he gets killed with 2 strike pitches because he doesn't have the control of the slider/curve to throw it over the plate but low or to back foot a RH hitter. Instead he catches too much of the plate and hitters are looking for the breaking ball. His change-up needs a lot of work because he throws it too high in the zone most of the time. He has all the talent to be a TOR pitcher if he can learn to control the upper part of the zone and get an effective change-up.
  14. The highest SV I ever saw for Beeter was 18. Still way to high for Gallo, but certainly not anywhere close to the combined value of Turang/Black/Mitchell/Gasser.
  15. A pitcher who Stearns would DFA less than 20 hours later - a struggling relief pitcher who will go gone next year - the Padres' 24th rated prospect, yet another OF in a system loaded with OFs - 15th rated prospect in Padres' system who projects to be a swing man... If that's the best Stearns could get, he should have kept Hader and traded him at the end of the season. The return couldn't be much weaker.
  16. So Strearns' "best" pickup, Bush, yesterday allows 3 hits and two runs in an inning in a Brewer loss. Today allows a double to the first guy he faces to tie it, then a wild pitch loses yet another game for Milwaukee. You just can't get any more pathetic than how the Brewers have been playing since the trade deadline.
  17. So for one of the best relievers in baseball, Stearns gets a guy he immediately DFA'd, a struggling reliever who was removed from his late inning job and who will probably be gone in 2023, a prospect whose ceiling is a #5 or swing man, and a prospect who wasn't in S.D. top 20. Then to add to his fiasco he pays for a guy who hasn't pitched in two years and may not pitch this year and will be a FA next year. His "best" move was getting a 36 year old with a questionable past. This can only be described as a Stearns' sh*t show. The Padres not only took his lunch money, they took his shirt, pants, and shoes too.
  18. Another very underwhelming move by Stearns. Instead of the bat that CC needs, DS gets a reclamation project who hasn't pitched in two years. While the other contenders in the National League get better, Stearns has the Brewers (depending on how Rogers and Lamet perform) about even or getting worse. Maybe Ruiz can salvage what so far, has been a highly disappointing time.
  19. Like a lot of fans, I was way off when I thought Stearns could have done a lot better for Hader. At least they dumped his salary and maybe Ruiz could compete for the CF job next year. Rogers and Lamet need to drastically turn things around if either is going to help the pen right now. Lamet's ongoing arm/elbow issues has seen him struggle for the last couple of years. He was bad last year after another round of arm problems and has been horrible (9.49 ERA - 2.02 WHIP - 6.6 BBs/9 IPS) this year since he returned from yet another arm injury. According to the Padre sites, they were getting ready to DFA him. Rogers hasn't been good for two months (In June/July giving up 16 earned runs and 26 hits in 19 IPs) and had to be removed from high leverage innings. Next year Rogers will be gone in FA. Lamet will be making over $5M in arby next year and unless the Brewers can find something the Padres couldn't, I don't see him being around.
  20. The big problem with Devers is money! He'll be making $15-18M next year in arby. He and Yelich alone would be over 1/3 of the payroll. With all the other arby guys it just doesn't work, especially for a guy who is a one-and-done.
  21. The only upside I see to Gallo is he can't get much worse. The Brewers are the 4th worst team in baseball in Ks and Gallo is whiffing at a 39% rate. He's hitting .159/.282 with a BABIP of .217. The Yankees who are desperate for a CF, won't play him there! Plus he would cost almost $4M to the payroll. Rather than trade anybody for Gallo, I'd much rather they play McCutchon in CF and use Hiura as a DH.
  22. Since June 1 Hiura 14/58 ( .241) with 3 HRs and 4 RBIs. He walked 7 times and struckout 32 times (47% rate). I don't see how those numbers "deserve" anything.
  23. The price in prospects would have to be small and the Red Sox would have to kick in some cash. If the deal were done tomorrow, Martinez would cost around $7.5M. I'd rather have the switch hitting Bell who can play a position if needed.
  24. Unless the Red Sox dumped in a boat load of cash the Brewers aren't even thinking about Bogaerts. He's scheduled to make $20M the next four years. Way, way out of Stearns' price range. Martinez, or relief pitchers Schreiber, or Whitlock would be a possibilities if the price was right.
