  1. I was only able to follow on Yahoo's box score today, so can you guys answer the following: 1. Was there strong defensive pressure by the Illini or were the Badgers just ice-cold today? and 2. Why/how did an ice-cold Bohannon get the potential game-tying shot with 16 to go instead of a red-hot Hughes? I do have to think/hope that the "fake rally" (as our friends at NSBB dub Cubs' "too little, too late" moments) and the fact that a lot of top teams seem to be struggling in their conference tourneys will help keep the Badgers at a 4 seed. Would hate to see them get a 5....or worse.
  2. The Badgers are colder than Lake Superior right now
  3. Yeah, somebody at the Chronicle's messageboard wrote yesterday that Zito's plunking stood for "dignity and class" and I replied that if he knew anything about those things his musical career would've ended a long time ago. Didn't go over so well.
  4. I was responding to Rev. SeriesFinale, who was offended that a Giants writer was speculating about Fielder's intentions, by pointing out that it wasn't only the San Francisco press that thought perhaps Fielder had revenge on his mind.I wasn't offended specifically because it was Schulman, who I think generally does a pretty good job (not sure where you got that idea, either). I think it's an unfair and maybe irresponsible thing to speculate whoever the journalist. Anyway, here is Golic's rant from earlier today.
  5. Not to take this thread on a tangent, but they've even had me drinking the Kool-Aid regarding Bonds: "Yeah, maybe he did take steroids...but how can you quantify it?" etc etc
  6. Bonds is still revered here, however.
  7. Bruce Jenkins' column in the Chron today is riding awfully high on the horse. Prince is the biggest jerk in the game, apparently.
  8. It's funny, I'd say the majority of Giants' fans were happy about the plunking and thinking Prince deserved it for showboating, but about 25% thought it was a silly response to goofy fun (that some of them actually thought was pretty funny). And yeah, I've heard some of them point out how silly it was since it wasn't just Prince on it. That earthquake theory, while interesting, is not one I've heard from anyone here whatsoever though! Anyway, this came up on the Rome show this morning as well. It does seem to have picked up a bit of ink nationally since at the elast it's pretty odd that someone gets plunked in ST for something that happened 6 months ago.
  9. The "speculation" just ticks me off: why use Occam's Razor and surmise the likeliest: that the location and much-mocked speed of Zito's fastball didn't actually hurt him, and rather than coming out in the 1st without an AB in the first ST game of the year, Fielder waved him off, when you can "speculate" that Prince is a heavy with violent intentions swinging his weight around the organization?
  10. I'm a bit (just a bit) surprised there hasn't been a dedicated thread about this--it was somewhat big news all afternoon here in SF on sports talk radio and the Chronicle's website. I still say the Giants were a bit too overly-sensitive about the bowling pin celebration and that Giants' fans celebrating the plunking and crowing about "traditionalism and class" after worshipping a self-aggrandizing roids-freak for almost two decades is a joke, but at the same time I'm glad it happened so everyone can move on. Still, I hope that Prince really hammers them this year and keeps being an entertaining player just to remain deeply in their craw. The most interesting bit of fallout I heard today though was this, from Giants' beat writer Henry Schulman in his post-game notes: Wow--pretty heavy aspersions cast. (Edited title so no one would think Prince was plunked after March 4 - hawing)
  11. I cannot believe how thin the Giants' skin is about this. Anyway, I'd been listening to the Giants' webcast out here but as much as I like their broadcast guys I'm gonna have to switch to Ueck
  12. Over a week late, but here is that interview TH gave on KNBR regarding the Selig statue.
  13. You know, I hate Bud Light and dislike auto-tune, but that spot was probably my favorite of the Super Bowl. I also liked the surreal fiddling beaver. A down year overall.
  14. Let me guess, the hosts basically boiled their argument down to: "Bud is an evil commissioner who allowed steroids to run rampant", right?Yep, pretty much. One of the two goes on rants about Selig relatively often, and so when this news came over the wire, they were having kinda a laugh about it and wanted to bring TH on to find out "what the heck Milwaukee is thinking" (to paraphrase). It especially ticks me off because he never rants anywhere near as much about the well-documented steroids issue that was borne out of the Bay Area. It almost seemed like he was backtracking with TH a bit yesterday--"I just want him to take some responsibility, but he lies and says that he had no idea,"--when usually he leans so hard on Selig you'd think he was the only responsible party. TH acquitted himself well, I thought: discussing Don Fehr and the union as well as Selig's accomplishments as owner and commissioner. I also think TH feels like I do: Bud may be a schlub, but he's our schlub, so back off. [The radio show guys out here, for what it's worth, tried to make it seem like TH was defending him because him and Selig were personal buddies.] To expand on that, I'm not a big Selig fan, but I can respect what he did to bring baseball here and I can respect what I think has been an under-rated job as commissioner. I have no problem with the statue.
  15. TH is on KNBR right now here in SF talking on a local show and defending Bud and the statue and it's really something else--it's getting pretty chippy.
  16. So now the truth can be told: Schoeneweis was acting as double-agent when he gave up that meatball to Wes Helms as a Met on September 28, 2008.
  17. Yeah, I'm like you: I get snookered into the Academy's ultimate scheme every year and end up going to see all the Best Picture nominees plus the major performance nominees before the awards. This year I've still gotta see District 9 (I was interested but put it off until DVD and now I don't have much excuse), Blind Side (ugh), and Precious (double ugh--looks like a Lifetime movie to me, plus Mariah Carey). On the acting side I really want to see Crazy Heart and The Last Station (which I've only seen trailers for around here so far but should be out soon). If I had to vote for Best Picture right now I'm honestly not sure what I'd vote for, but A Serious Man would probably be up there. It's been hard to remove from my head despite not really covering any new ground thematically. I enjoyed An Education--it picks up steam as it goes along and there are some fantastic scenes--but I don't think it would have or should have made it to a field of 5.
  18. You know though, I think you've convinced me--I mean, the tale of Star Wars in the '77 Awards kinda strips the sheen from the argument that Avatar is the 800 pound gorilla as the greatest grosser of all time.
  19. Well, I mean, the Golden Globes happened. I think it's hard to discount their influence. But yeah, you make good points. I do also think Avatar greatly benefits from an expanded field--I would imagine that movies like An Education and A Serious Man are gonna draw votes from Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds, not Avatar.
  20. I agree--it really does make the movies that weren't selected for Best Direction noms seem like second-class citizens. Anyway, I'm a little surprised that you (and others) seem to think there will be a horse race for Best Picture. The people I know in LA I've talked to seem to think it'll be Avatar in a walk, based on whatever technical ground-breaking occurred and moreso on the fact that it saved the town's financial bacon. The only thing I can think of is the actors' bloc maybe revolting against the technical direction the movie's taking (fair or not) and Hurt Locker pulling the subsequent upset: see Avatar being shut out of the SAG Award nominations (again, fair or not).
  21. I'm apt to think this way too--what's scary is when you think about the guys that beat Nixon out. And their possible equivalents this season. Yikes.
  22. Well, I meanm here Pandora is starting to try to pound on the lid of her box. Are the taverns and grills on Blue Mound and elsewhere a bigger danger for this than the other 15-25K or so who are treating the MP parking lots like an open bar? Where it's a big part of the actual "culture" surrounding the franchise, like it or not? I honestly don't know. As for the issue at hand though, I've taken the shuttles a couple times when it was more convenient to meet at a bar and have a bite and a beer than to park at MP for whatever reason, and I thought they were great and the owners obviously have them for a reason. It brings in people. I think $3.70 per game is reasonable to keep them going and going safely.
