Well, if they trade JJ in the off-season as it seems they'll likely do, that's only one year--they'd be better off doing it now while a team has a 1 1/2 years I'd assume. I guess they're counting on him raising his value in the second half to the point where it'd be higher now? In a playoff race and that extra year I don't see how, but I've been a bit confused by a lot of what's been going on.

All paroxysms aside, I tend to agree here, although I think it's just pretty depressing that Claudio Vargas is the deadline pitcher we've picked up to help salve this team's largest, most-gaping wound. -
So our starters this weekend are Mike Burns and Claudio Vargas? We need a facepalm smiley around here. We've got Prince, Braun, and Yo all together for just a few short years and this is the rotation we're throwing out there. Wow.

Whoa! This must've been Bob Skube's "underwhelming" deal. I honestly haven't been following Vargas much this season. Glad for Vinny, but I doubt he'll see much more PT now.

Burns' return makes me think any potential deal really is dead. although I suppose there's no reason why Billy Hall's spot couldn't be filled for now by another SP. Maybe Burns would take on McClung's innings-eater role, who knows. Edit: As I wrote this news of the Vargas deal comes through, oof....

That was the "being smart" part. We have no idea what kind of offers or counter-offers were made, but given the available pitching we're aware of, I shudder to think what kind of pitching we'd get for just a standard-issue "AA guy or two." Quality SP doesn't grow on trees, to use a cliche. They have value, which is why there have been sizable deals involving them (I'm always surprised when people here think JJ can fetch a young #2, but that's another argument I suppose). As far as our top-notch AA guys, for better or for worse, we're not in a position to throw them away on the likes of Kevin Correia. If the entire team, not just the SP, had done better the first 2/3 of the season, maybe they'd be a little more devil-may-care. But we'll be 4 games back at best by the end of the night, and the two in front of us (not to mention the one alongside us) have been heating up and have guys coming back while we have key guys going down. It pays in the long run to be prudent, and this is a team that can't afford not to look into the long-term. -

I'm incredibly depressed by the thought of another Mike Burns start, much less two more months of them, but I can accept that what was out there just wasn't worth the long-term cost to the Brewers. "You need two Pitchers...GO GET THEM. " Jeez. I wish everything in life was as simple as you must believe this is. Do you think the guy is twiddling his thumbs? -
Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. Curious trade, I'm impressed with the Pirates getting Alderson and Hart the last two days although they may end up being more Snells and Gorzelannys for them.

Hm. Who's to say. JS beat writer Tom Haudricourt wrote "No corresponding moves were made to replace those players. I'm hearing there's less than a 50% chance of making a trade, so it could come down to summoning minor league players such as infielder Hernan Iribarren and right-hander Mike Burns." so that was just a guess on my part.

I don't entirely disagree with huge chunks of it (no pun intended), but like most have said, I've seen obese and/or drunk and/or uneducated fans in pretty much every park, and MP didn't really stand out for me in any of those instances--except maybe drunks, and even then only in the bleachers on Opening Day.

I guess I'm confused as to whether it really is "all on his terms." I'm a big Hall fan and really want to see him succeed, but if he's scuffling in Nashville, can the Brewers keep him down as long as the team wants? Especially if Gamel or whoever is doing well? Who really holds the reins here in Hall's specific situation?

Beyond the fact that he can't hit, the question would have to be why, and why now? Who's playing time is he going to take if he comes back in in 2 weeks? There certainly must be something more to this story. Just seems kind of odd.Yeah, I want to applaud this on all sides, but it does seem fishy. And whose playing time is he taking down there? I assume Gamel comes back up if only so Hall can get PT to (hopefully) work out his issues, but that seems to defeat the purpose of sending him down a couple weeks back. The whole thing is weird. Maybe they really did want their obviously-flailing investment to get his head screwed back on tight and hash things out and Hall gave in after a ghastly couple of months.

Yeah, why do I get the feeling we'll see a DP here. I mean, I'd take the run obviously, but this could be a big inning.

Great job, Yo. I hope these guys don't let you down (in a day game besides!) again. And yeah, that was a fun inning to watch and all, but I still think I'd rather have not had another dozen pitches piled on his young arm in that situation.
