  1. I agree...at this point they can't really look for a fix for this season only. I'm of the mind that Melvin's best chance to get someone who can help next year is probably right now...look at young guys under control for a few years who might not be on the radar for the big contenders right now. I agree completely--that's why even though the team's playing worse, I'd rather see them go after Cliff Lee or Halladay at this point. Funny though, after Saturday night I started to believe that maybe Washburn would be a big help this year--I don't know why 23 runs in two games made me think we don't need a pitcher now. It was just a game lost in the standings.
  2. I went a couple years ago--great stadium. The Gaslamp Quarter right next to the park has all kinds of different restaurants and bars--not sure what's up your alley but if you start researching there I'm sure you'll find something.
  3. The Brewers and this trade deadline have been bothering so much that I've been dreaming about it: last night I had a long dream (that was maybe not quite a "nightmare" per se, but was surprisingly very very upsetting to me in my dream and when I woke up) that the Brewers traded Prince for some B-line pitcher to (alternately at different points) the A's, the Tigers, and the San Antonio Spurs baseball team (?!?). I remember feeling really bad about it.
  4. You haven't been here since May and you come back to vent? Anyway, yeah, getting hammered by the Nationals to fall under .500 is the new low point of the season.
  5. The very strong possibility of Arroyo going to the Yankees would seem to drive down the price here, I'd assume
  6. Why bring Dillard up then Man, given most of his recent outings, where he's appeared almost gassed, we could be looking at Seth McClung II here
  7. The more interest I'm hearing on Washburn from other teams and the more Escobar's name starts popping up the less I think this will happen, and the clock is ticking on getting Washburn to Milwaukee for tomorrow night's start. I'm thinking this is dead or dying too. Now, if JJ isn't starting tonight...
  8. Serious question: When did DM call LaPorta "untouchable"? Not necessarily saying he didn't, but I don't recall him being in the press about it as much as he's been for Escobar and Gamel. Personally, I think he balks if the price is Escobar given JJ's contract situation, and I do think he considers Gamel untouchable.
  9. Yeah, I mentioned last night that I was nervous about this too: Jack Z is pretty much the last GM I'd want the Brewers dealing with, especially if prospects are involved.
  10. I ran the Wharf-to-Wharf down in Santa Cruz this morning, and since it's a gigantic vaguely-lighthearted "fun run" type of race, I wore this shirt: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51447RjbkzL._AA280_.jpg You know, just goofy fun. Anyway, at these things you see a lot of shirts for road-races from 5Ks to Marathons or whatever, and as we were waiting around at the start for the gun to go off, some guy nearby that I saw looking over at me with his girlfriend or whatever asked, "The 'Sausage Race'...where is that one?" I almost started to explain, but then I just said, "Uh...Milwaukee."
  11. It's still before 11 PM out here in PST! Jack Z should just be getting his second wind! Anyway, I hope this deal as described doesn't happen but if it does I hope it is before I wake up tomorrow because these vigils of constant refreshing are the pits. Still think if it will, it'll be by tomorrow night, but I'd rather Dillard pitch Tuesday and wait and see how the series versus the Nats goes before pulling any trigger.
  12. By the way...Happy Birthday Brandon Morrow. Anyway, despite that looming Tuesday start, I'd feel a lot better about this deal (relatively speaking) if the Brewers made the deal Friday morning after tearing through the Nationals. I can't imagine how I'd feel this Friday morning if we'd dealt JJ or Escobar for Washburn tomorrow morning and they just dropped two or three at home to Washington. Actually, I can.
  13. I agree with all of this. And there's the irony of a trade that could be largely driven by the recent huge crowds at MP could see the departure of one of that crowd's absolute favorites. Edit: For the record I don't want to see Escobar go either...not for Washburn, not now.
  14. Yeah, heavy chatter from those in the know on both side. And given the Tuesday start, I think this happens tonight or tomorrow or not at all. Whether, of course, we like it or not. I'll be sad to see JJ or Escobar go for a half-year of Washburn on a problematic uninspiring Brewers team (unless, of course, in the end I'm somehow not...). The fact that Jack Z is involved has me nervous.
  15. Yeah, I'm usually not this negative but I was hearing "The Day The Brewers Died" ("Bye Bye, to the Miller Park fans...") in my head after this one. Still a long way to go, but they've just been milquetoast at best since Rickie went down--just swirling downwards....
  16. Yeah, unless you've got the clout, I think if they're asking for $400 (which seems wildly exorbitant if they have the available seats...talk to them again) to change you should go ahead and look into booking another flight which could likely be cheaper than chance stand-by. It would be awful to show up at the airport at, say 4 AM for those morning flights and not get on either one and miss the wedding stuff. Good luck, I fly relatively a lot but don't run into these issues often so hopefully someone who deals with this more can help.
  17. I mean, I think there's no way what Prince said wasn't somewhat disrespectful (and given the bad blood, most likely intended to be, frankly), but a lot of it is based in truth: You're playing on a bad team for a directionless franchise in front of nobody--a fanbase that has, rightfully, mostly turned away from this decades-long trainwreck. As a player, I'd have said my tearful goodbyes to "my boys," as LaRoche called them (although I'm wondering what kind of memories he's made with the Pirates turnstile-roster in his 2 1/2 years there, and he'll see Andy at Thanksgiving) and gotten on the first flight to the storied team with two World Series titles in the last five years that's in the pennant chase (and, of course, has my boy Jason Bay on it).

  19. They were four games out of a playoff spot when they traded for CC last year and they only had him for the rest of the year. They're three now and would have Halladay or Lee until the end of 2010. No, I'm not saying that I'd be happy to see either go, or that they couldn't use two strong pitchers instead of just one (who couldn't), but in this window of opportunity for the next few years, having a stud like one of those guys is huge. Not the magic key, no, but it provides a ton of leverage. I guess to answer the question, I'd go with Escobar, too. It would be painful but you've got to give to get and I think they need a pitcher like that the next couple years (and a heavy-hitting 3B) more than they'll need a SS.
  20. Some guy on another messageboard I post on joked said that the teams didn't make this deal, Lugo and Duncan negotiated it themselves. I would've liked to have seen the Cards get handcuffed by Lugo's contract as well...what can you do I guess.
  21. Worth reading the comments...the hatred for the Brewers in Pittsburgh is pretty funny.

  23. Looks like "Who the heck is" Delwyn Young (amongst others) did the untuck after Moss' walkoff: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2009_07_22_milmlb_pitmlb_1&mode=wrap
  24. If they're not going to get Halladay or Lee--and I can see the pros and cons of both sides of those debates--I think the only deal they should make is for another reliever. I think that plus a stronger section half from Hardy and/or Hart would likely provide a push that could keep them in it for the stretch.
