  1. Maybe Parra as well. Should be an interesting off-season.
  2. Funny that a few weeks ago the Mariners might've gotten JJ Hardy or even Alcides Escobar by some reports, but they ended getting a former Brewers SS anyway, if not one they were initially hoping for. Of course, Flores is no Washburn either. Well, I'll take the savings--I agree there was no chance that DM took that $1.3M saved over a Harang or Arroyo so I'm not gonna get chapped at him. On the other hand, there was a lot of chat about "something in the works" and seemed to be more interest around MLB (relatively speaking) for this to have been the move, but whatever. I'm a Billy Hall fan so I want to wish him the best in Seattle but it would indeed be a bitter pill to have the Brewers furnish the salary of a newly-successful Bill Hall as a well-paid Mariner.
  3. I'd love to see them make some kind of stand for .500 in a rough September (I don't see the pitching magically becoming that much better--although the return of Bush/Suppan/Arroyo? Harang? could help--but whatever), but it'd almost be more frustrating if they get a hot streak next month against some good teams and finish just a few out of a playoff spot after going (so far) 6-10 versus the likes of the Pirates, Padres, and Nationals the last couple months.
  4. That 9-4 loss to the Braves at home on July 24th that put them 3.5 back a week before the trade deadline, right after they'd lost a series to the Pirates, made me feel they were out of it but I still had hopes they could make a run. At 9 back, those hopes are pretty much dashed now, and since I can't stand the Cards or the Cubs, I don't relish playing spoiler for either one, which seems all September could be entertaining for, at best. I knew going in this season that the playoffs seemed unlikely, but this is still disappointing since I thought they could make September interesting.
  5. When you think about how horrific this pitching staff has been against some really bad teams the last two months, it makes you wonder how many games under .500 we're gonna be at the end of the season with that tough September stretch.
  6. I was able to listen to 620 yesterday as I driving from Madison to Chicago to fly home--it was a real treat. But yeah, Ueck hates that guy. Hates him. Ueck also got me going--when Fielder hit that long fly at the end, he actually really started screaming, "GET UP! GET UP! GET OUTT-....and Pence catches it at the wall!" Uff da.
  7. I thought Half Nelson was terrific (in a devastating kinda way!) and have heard good stuff about this one. Looking forward to it.
  8. I'm a bit confused, we had gone 1-1 since the Dodger series when this trade went down. For whatever reason, I thought this deal went down after the game when I first read this. But to answer your question, yeah, I do think there's a sizable difference between 5 games back and 6 games back at this juncture. Maybe not a massive one, but enough of one that depending on the trading price and considering at least nearly half a million will be invested in Weathers next year I probably wouldn't have made the move. Who knows though--if they get hot and the teams in front of them cool down and they can make a move, Weathers should definitely help.
  9. I'd have been a lot more gung-ho about this move after the Dodgers series in LA. As it stands, I'm not sure what the purpose is, despite how Stormy's been pitching this year, unless they're planning on picking up that option for next season, which is a bit hard to imagine but who knows
  10. Sad thing when a team scores 6 runs and you think, "Man, we coulda got 'em tonight!" Of course, 3 runs rarely does the job either. And yeah, Valverde is right next to Coco in terms of the demonstrative guys I hate to see the Brewers give up a save to. Makes you appreciate Trevor.
  11. People here in SF seem to think it must be the Giants since they need the bat and they almost dealt him for Cain or Lincecum before last season and picking up a contract like that has Sabean all over it (not to mention they can afford it), but I can't imagine he'd get all the way through the AL teams and then most of the NL
  12. Agreed all the way down the line. In fact, when you look at most other team's "version" of bf.net, you realize how good we have it here in terms of quality posters and moderation. I've spent a little time lurking at DodgerBlues this week, and uff da...
  13. Yeah, I listened to the game on KNBR this afternoon and was really happy for the guy (despite the implications for the Brewers at this point, which I never truly foresaw in early April). He wasn't spectacular but that Whiteside GS gave him what I like to call the Looper-Advantage.
  14. This was a primary tenet of my incredibly-well-thought-out theory as well, especially considering his initial reaction: incredulous laughter and looking at Mota while asking "What?!?" Well, it's over now...until the playoffs.
  15. Serious question: does sound not carry that well at Dodger Stadium? It's got that open air, scalloped-design, and it's in a ravine. I only ask because Scully also mentioned they were giving it to Prince, badly, but it didn't sound all that deafening or imposing on the telecast (LA feed). Anyway, yeah, I'll take the series win for the first time in an age. This was big to that strand of hope.
  16. Ball Four and Moneyball are the only two here I've read...the rest sound great and I'm glad patrickgpe asked the question. I've got a couple great collections of baseball-related short stories but I know that's not your bag. Jim Shepard's "Batting Against Castro" is probably my all-time favorite baseball story, even if baseball isn't necessarily at its core: http://therumpus.net/2009/03/a-fans-notes-battling-against-castro/
  17. dlk9s for thread MVP. Fantastic. And I'm glad to see you guys expended half the IGT on how bad that horrific God Bless America was--I texted a Dodger fan friend who was at the game about it and he said people there def. took note of it
  18. Ahaha, good work, dlk9s Alright, let's get this going--Prince GS?!?
  19. Just a heads-up everyone, our very own LouisEly is very visible behind home plate tonight. Left side of the batter, second row, wearing a blue-ish Hawaiian Brewers jersey, blonde, kinda-stocky tall guy.
  20. That's the one hole in the theory. Someone on another site pointed out Mota was at 40 pitches and they may have just had Troncoso soft tossing in case. I wasn't really paying attention to the bullpen. Did they show him throwing on FSN?No, it wasn't until after Troncoso came pretty much right out that BA mentioned that he was apparently all ready to go (to Rock's mild disgust), but you're right that I see long relievers soft-toss all the time, and that FSN didn't show it seems to prove that. So who knows.
  21. I guess I'm most annyed by the storyline that the Brewers were upset they were getting their brains beat in so they took it out on Manny. This is a pitching staff that has given up 10+ runs four times--four times!--in the last ten days (!), and this time, against a non-divisional opponent they have no history with, is gonna be the straw that breaks the camel's back and makes them petulantly seek "revenge"? Give me a break.
  22. Was Martin the one who had Troncoso warmed up though? I don't know. I don't think Prince was in the wrong for being angry; he was, however, for going after Mota or whoever in the tunnel, and we're just gonna have to get used to hearing more about it since it's more unusual than the rather blase story about the Dodgers being wrong in taking out what were most apparently not purpose pitches on Prince. Almost nobody I've heard talk about the story nationally today has had the context correct, but I'm ultimately not sure it matters in terms of trying to start something after the game.
  23. Yeah, that's what I thought too--right afterwards he was laughing. Laughing incredulously, yeah, but the sense of humor was there. Maybe he just got chapped the more he thought about the context--taking a clearly, clearly premeditated purpose pitch under extremely questionable circumstances at the absolute tail end of a blowout. It is pretty galling by Torre and the Dodgers, as someone put it. Still, I wouldn't advocate attacking guys in the tunnel or whatever. But I've kinda changed my mind from last night and think a Dodger does need to get dotted in the first tonight. I'm willing to bet that warnings are issued before the game though, or worse, after one of our guys gets plunked in the first (although if they hit Braunie with two outs in the 1st tonight I guarantee the mound will be charged). But back to the initial question--no, I still don't see it being the factor that magically improves the pitching situation (although I liked the Prince/Parra comparison).
  24. No. The effort's been there. The pitching is just plain bad. Anyway, I hope this circus dies down. Torrewas definitely in the wrong but Prince trying to start a brawl or whatever downstairs is pretty ridiculous. I mean, I assume he didn't care for it within the context of his past friendship with Mota (and obviously within the context of the game--Swindle and Smith just can't pitch, and Smith doesn't have close to the kind of control to go for Ramirez' wrists), but it's not like Mota went for his head or anything.
  25. I can imagine that informed his "performance" this evening. According to Witrado, Prince and Mota were friends last year; I feel kinda bad for M-M-M-M-ota's In, all things considered. Never knew Torre was such a thin-skinned punk. I mean, come on.
