  1. He absolutely can. But when you suggest that here the MA apologists claim that no one does that and that player salaries have to be paid for by direct baseball revenue. I think it's pretty clear the Mets baseball revenue (ticket sales, tv and radio revenue, etc.) is not going to cover these payrolls. Cohen will need to bring in money from other ventures or borrow.
  2. I think billionaire's like to own major sports teams for the exclusivity and cool factor. The asset appreciation is a nice bonus but not the main motivation.
  3. I'm pretty certain Steve Cohen doesn't give a (bleep) about shedding payroll for 2023. Cohen could pay Escobar's contract by digging around in his couch cushions.
  4. The Cubs will regret this contract by year 2 unless 2022 is Swanson's true offensive production.
  5. MLB teams are taking a page out of the NFL salary cap playbook. I think they fully expect the last 3-4 years on these 10-13 year deals to be "dead money." They just want to flatten the AAV to help with yearly luxury tax hits until they have to deal with the dead money years. It's the typical rob Peter (the future) to pay Paul (the present). Sadly this fiscal policy is used all too often in other aspects of life...
  6. Rather than extend him, I would trade him right now to the Dodgers (assuming the Dodgers have interest--and I think they do). The Dodgers have plenty of prospects to spare. The Brewers could bridge to Brice Turang with someone like Elvis Andrus or Jose Iglesias or Jean Segura.
  7. I'm sure the prices will continue skyward more than ever. It doesn't bother me though. I eat before the games I go to (whether at home or tailgating) and bring a bag of peanuts and a couple of bottles of water with me and I'm good. I no longer drink alcohol so the temptation to pay exorbitant sums of money on beer is gone. That's not to say I'm a total cheap a**. I'd just rather spend my money on good seats than food and drink.
  8. I like the headline from Keith Law's article in The Athletic: "Law: Oakland trades Sean Murphy to Atlanta, and the winners are … the Brewers?" Subscription required* but here's the article: https://theathletic.com/3995819/2022/12/12/trade-grade-athletics-braves-brewers/ *My subscription to The Athletic was $1 per month. ? I don't normally like subscription services but for $1 a month I can make an exception.
  9. Thanks. I knew it had been a few years.
  10. How long was it RTBNL? The years are flying by for me. I can't even remember.
  11. I keep waiting to see what other pieces the Brewers had to add to the deal. I don't think there are any. This is an impressive trade for the Brewers. I never viewed Ruiz as having a bright future and they flipped him for a young catcher who has already proved he can hit MLB pitching.
  12. 35 HR's? He's a 0.9 WAR player. Chris Carter hit 41 bombs (also 0.9 WAR) for the Brewers and they didn't even bother to tender him a contract after that season. Let's not make Tellez out to be more than what he is.
  13. I think Stearns was hamstrung by MA's budgetary constraints. I also think that's a major reason why he's playing out the string as an advisor for his last year and then moving on greener pastures.
  14. The Padres expect Machado to opt out next year. He will be off the books if they decide not to re-sign. I think this is Padres management pushing all their chips in for 2023. And the Dodgers, who have done almost nothing this offseason, will still finish ahead of the Padres due to their deep and strong farm system and very smart front office. The Padres have quickly become my least liked NL team, despite the fact that they employ the imminently likeable Josh Hader.
  15. Pitch framing will soon be an irrelevant art. As in 2024.
  16. When Andrew Friedman lets a player walk away rather than pay $18m when that player has been developed in-house, is a former MVP, is 27 years old, and plays a position of need for the team--it's probably best to steer clear of that player. Especially at $17.5m. Either Jed Hoyer is smarter than Friedman or more desperate. I'm going with the latter.
  17. Since when do the Brewers worry about clubhouse culture?
  18. Why would you want to move Adames, the Brewers best position player, off his natural position when there is a huge hole for Turang to fill at 2B with the departure of Wong? Your solution is in search of problem that doesn't exist.
  19. I'd wager that one of these three will not be on the roster come opening day. The Dodgers have use for any of the three and they have plenty of young major league ready pitchers and position players to offer. Diego Cartaya - C Michael Busch - 2B James Outman - OF Miguel Vargas - 3B Bobby Miller - SP Gavin Stone - SP Ryan Pepiot - SP Michael Grove - SP They even have surplus MLB bullpen talent that is good and cost controlled: Yency Almonte, Andre Jackson, and Caleb Ferguson
  20. Well that's their "plan." I think their "plan" is to drive up the price on any one of the three.
  21. This Axman guy is pretty smart. ?
  22. The Brewers should encourage Yelich to spend his off-seasons with Ryan Braun. Might get better production.
  23. A lot more fans would have showed up in August and September if the Brewers hadn't traded their closer at the deadline. And I think fans would be a lot more excited for 2023 if that hadn't happened. Edit - I can see why Tampa and Miami struggle at the gate. It has to be hard to emotionally (and financially) invest in a team when you feel like management is going to pull the football away like Lucy at any moment. And Charlie Brown ends up on his back.
  24. Jarred Kelenic has torn up AAA multiple years and he has yet to do jack at the MLB level. He has a 66 OPS+ over two seasons in Seattle (558 PA). It's still too early to write him off but he's exhibit A showing that AAA success does not always = MLB success, especially in year 1 or 2 in the bigs. While rolling the dice with rookie OF'ers can be exciting, my cautious side prefers to hold onto guys you know can hit MLB pitching.
  25. I think Wong will be next.
