  1. Baseball isnt really set up to have just two divisions in each league the NL East would have to be Atlanta NY Florida Philly Wash Chicago Cincy Pitts the West of course would be: Milwaukee Houston St. louis San Diego San Francisco Colorado LA Arizona in this format you would have no team really in close proximity of Milwaukee, and an unbalanced schedule would send Milwaukee out west quite a bit, same of course with STL and even Houston. I also think the smaller divisions make it easier for small market teams to make the playoffs each year. Take the NL EAST proposed above. Pittsburgh would have to be better than NY, Philly, Chicago and Atlanta in order to make the playoffs. In the current NL Central, the only two annual powerhouses are Chicago and Stl. and even they have down years now and again. Pitt really is on the same level of competitiveness as Milwaukee and Cincy, even Houston doesnt have the competitve advantage of a NY of Chicago.
  2. Perhaps we'll see HY as a participant in Deadspin's annual Sports Human Of The Year Award. He certainly fits the criteria.
  3. Right, Im pretty sure that is what EVERY person here has objected to. The manner in which he acted is the appalling part, not the simple request for a trade.
  4. I thought they changed the rules a few years ago and that games that started were either considered full games if after 5 innings, but if not after 5 innings then the game picks up where it left off.
  5. Gamel gets #24 I see, so #17 remains semi-retired.
  6. I have caught a foul ball at a game. Let me tell you, there is no better feeling at game than catching a foul ball...and then looking for the nearest little kid to give it to. That is what I did and continue to do. Any ball I catch is going right into my dogs mouth or (now that I have kids) into my kids toybox, so lets not pretend that these baseballs have some sort of huge value, they dont. The only reason this ball had value to HY is because it had value to Coghlan.
  7. If I lost my wedding ring and someone found it, and they knew it was my wedding ring I would think they were a jerk if they expected me to pay $500 for it.
  8. I guess I didnt realize Craig Coghlan ow whatever his name is was the next Ryan Braun. He seemed more like an average prospect to me, but I dont know the Marlins system either. Regardless, I doubt the ball that Happy caught had any value to him whatsoever. I think the game used bat, with an inscription acknowledging the trade/catch/HR, whatever. But to each his own.
  9. So if the major league minimum were $45,000 then should Happy have to pay the player for the autograph that he was requesting on the ball he wanted in exchange? Look, as pathetic as it may seem to some, nobody here is getting down on Happy for being a ballhawk. We all have weird hobbies that appeal to mostly ourselves. That clearly is not the issue here. The issue is that this was a story carried by the AP, SportsCenter, etc about a fan that was a bit out of place in treating this rookie's HR as if it were a ball that belonged in the Hall of Fame. I read Happy's blog, and when the Marlins employee came out to his seat with a bat from Coghlan that should have been it. The phrase "act like you've been there before" springs to mind, especially since Happy does this stuff every game. The issue here isnt ball hawking, it is the ransom asked for by the fan.
  10. Yeah this guy sort of gives fans a bad name. I think Bill Hall hit his 100th today. I was thinking if I had caught that I would have asked him to sign my Bill Hall retro jersey and get a pic of me and him with the ball. that is about it, I wouldnt ask him for a Ryan Braun jersey or bat or anything else, it is just a bit disrespectful, IMO.
  11. Gotta be kind of embarrassing to the player to have to go kiss Hanley's behind in order to get his first HR back. A little humiliating too. No wonder he was so uncooperative.
  12. What did SportsCenter say? That article didnt paint a very good picture of the Happy Youngster.
  13. I too came into the thread to pitch Iggy Pop, but I think the thread can be locked down after seeing that guy.
  14. No offense, but what are the Brewers supposed to do? They are loaded at 1b and corner OF spots and have been for the better part of the past 2-3 years. If this were the Kevin Barker era I could see getting upset, but what are the Brewers supposed to do with Nelson? Bench Braun Hart or Fielder to give him everyday playing time? There is a reason it took Brad so long to make the big leagues, that is because he wasnt a very good option for most of his minor league career. It is just bad timing for him in Milwaukee. I dont see him getting playing time for the Cubs so you can forget about that dream. He is better off landing with someone like Pittsburgh or Baltimore.
  15. I think the saying is that school loans and a home mortgage are "good" debt. Dont be afraid to take out loans, but dont take out more than you will need for tuition and whatever they are getting for room and board this year.
  16. The big question has to be, will the Brewers issue Gamel #17? Nobody has worn 17 since Gantner and I believe that is Gamel's number in the minor leagues.
  17. Most of that 4300 is probably going into the brokers pocket.
  18. This could work out pretty well for the Dodgers. They lose Manny for a part of the season that is less significant than, say, the last 50 games. Manny will be fresh come September and October, the Dodger bench gets more playing time which could benefit them in the short and long run, the NL West is pretty weak and the Dodgers shouldnt have a big problem staying in 1st or 2nd until the All Star break AND they get Manny services for a 1/3 discount!! Not a bad deal at all for LA.
  19. I need to watch High Fidelity again, I was way too young to appreciate it when it came out. That is a good comparison though by the author.
  20. What is the all time series at? Are we still below .500? This short run of dominance is nothing compared to what Pittsburgh has done to Milwaukee over the years, especially in Pittsburgh.
  21. Wow. I moved out of the Milwaukee area two years ago, but one of my lasting memories of my brief stint there was Vince's mustache. This is a dark day in local news and mustache history. My wife will be heartbroken.
  22. Will it be shown on MLB.com?
  23. On defense I can't really disagree, but on offense I don't think so. But Braun seems to be healthy so we don't really have to worry about it.Huh? I think in this hypo it is either Hall at 3b and Gamel in Lf or Gamel at 3b and Hall in Lf. I dont see what offense has to do with where they play on the field. If Braun were to miss extended time and Gamel was the one they wanted to call up, I would prefer Hall at 3b and Gamel in Lf.
  24. I wonder how much worse Gamel would be in LF than Hall would be. I ask simply because the difference in defense between Hall and Gamel at 3b is astronomical. Maybe Gamel should play some games in LF down in Nashville in case Braun is out for an extended period of time.
  25. The Pacers is named for the Indy 500 I believe, that isnt terrible. Although it would be like naming Milwaukee's basketball team the Milwaukee Tundra or something like that after the Packers.
