  1. Why should we have banned shifts in the first place other than nostalgia? A lot about baseball is based on tradition and "nostalgia"... As for reasons other than nostalgia, it would arguably lead to more hits and more runs. More hits and runs=more entertainment/fun. And if you're going to ban shifts in the first place, you might as well go all the way. Your attempt at a "when I was a kid" slight was pretty hilarious and brutal, too.
  2. I'm 26 FWIW. Based on your username, I'm guessing you're 2 years (or about) older than I am. Give me a reason why we should even have umps calling balls and strikes other than nostalgia....
  3. When I was a kid? I'm almost positive I'm younger than you...Sheesh. Just take a deep breath.
  4. "Happy medium" vs. bring back spitballs, eliminate the DH, lol Definition of a strawman argument.
  5. I certainly think there's a happy medium that can be struck where you can play no doubles defense yet not be able to line up directly behind 2B. It's not like that was the default situation for the entire history of the game until recently anyways.... What's the point of a shift ban if you can still employ a de facto shift?
  6. Of course Turang would be more valuable. But the fact of the matter is that Turang isn't at that point yet, neither are any other of the alternatives. Taking a .355 OBP away from the lineup without a proven alternative is risky business. Why I want to see if Hiura's actually become playable before jettisoning Winker.
  7. NBA has a restricted area. Wouldn't be any sillier. While for me personally it's an issue of the integrity of the game, at the end of the day for MLB, it's about money and entertainment. Hits and runs are a lot more entertaining.
  8. Meh. Baserunners, even slowpokes like Winker, are still quite valuable when you've got Willy, Rowdy, and Bill coming up in the order. Certainly better than Ks and no-baserunners which is what we've gotten otherwise. Frelick is the only one I'd rather have at the top of the order, but he's weeks away from being an option.
  9. Lol. There's different ways to implement a shift ban. Rules change in all sports all the time. In my mind, hard hit balls up the middle should be base hits. Hard hit balls right at fielders are just part of the game and have always been part of the game. Frustrating, but a part of the game. Shifting fielders to the point where they're right behind 2B is a relatively recent phenomenon. You've got me close to pulling out the old man yells at cloud GIF...
  10. A month plus. Maybe just before the all-star break. Sometimes it takes a bit to get the power back coming off neck surgery (also possible that it never returns). .355 OBP is 2nd on the team right now and quite valuable still in the #2 slot. I would call Hiura up in place of Voit before I cut bait with Winker completely. Either Hiura comes up and strikes out like he has his entire career. Or he makes a lot hard contact while showing a reduced K% in the high 20s/low 30s. If the latter and Winker's power doesn't return, then go ahead and cut ties with him. In the meantime, there's enough at-bats for both to show what they can do.
  11. They need to modify the shift ban after the season into specific "go-zones". Hard hit shots up the middle are still going for outs because the infielders are positioning themselves at the far edge of second base.
  12. K% down to 25.4%. That's below where it was when he was called up in 2019. Better OPS against LHP than RHP. It's time, for both him and Voit. We need to find out before the trade deadline.
  13. You don’t think it’s more than possible Wainwright, at the age of 41, has “lost it”, particularly with how bad he was in September/October of last season? 41 year olds tend to ‘lose it overnight’…
  14. Hopefully we get Dodger-killer Eric Lauer tonight. Runs are there for the taking against Syndergaard.
  15. Montgomery is good, but below our aces (and those of Washington and Philly before them). Mikolas (6.11 xERA) and Wainwright aren't good. Also fwiw, Rea isn't in the rotation any more...
  16. Stats and context? What's made up about the fact that he he's been good slugging in his career, he had two separate injuries last season that clearly impacted his power stroke, he's coming off surgery and a lengthy illness while playing in just 24 games, and he's got an OBP of .356 (#2 on the team). You tell me, wally....
  17. No. I'm the one who actually provided stats and context. You just bloviated about how you want to cut ties with Winker and Voit soon.
  18. Except for the fact that we're talking exclusively about hitting here...Or at least I am. You know what's quite valuable? a .356 OBP in the #2 slot in the batting order!
  19. Jesse Winker career slash line, 29 years old: .269/.373/.456 Alex Bregman career slash line, 29 years old: .274/.373/.490 Where did I say stats don't matter? I am simply providing context. If by the all-star break he's still slugging below .300, then yeah I'm sure the Brewers will look at making a change. But we're not even close to that point yet, even if you want it to be.
  20. Alex Bregman is slugging less than Joey Wiemer right now. Astros should cut him.
  21. Last year he had two separate injuries...This year he's coming off surgery and was sick for a while. He's got plenty of time. Rarely do 29 year olds with his history just lose their power unless injured.
