Article: Is Brandon Woodruff a Brewers Trade Candidate?
Brewcrew82 replied to Nash Walker's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
It's not me placing Chourio in that group, it's the stats at their respective ages and the industry experts who are doing that. There's a reason why he's a consensus top 10 prospect in baseball at all of 18 years of age... All I'm saying is that we should wait to see how this upcoming group of prospects turns out before we talk about an improved hitting development system, let alone "perpetual contention". Keston Hiura looked like a sure thing, until he no longer was, largely due to the stupidity of our development staff in completely altering his previously pristine swing. -

Yeah, but what if you keep all 4 of your big-league ready outfielders and some of them then prove to be not up to snuff? It's not like you can then go ahead and trade them at that point as they'll have lost a lot of the trade value they had when they were still promising prospects. Part of the FO's job is to assess which of their prospects are likely to "hit" or "miss" based on their production, tools, and trajectory, and cash in on the value of the ones they think have greater potential to miss. A guy like Garrett Mitchell is a great example in light of the prevailing concerns (e.g., contact, power) during an otherwise impressive MLB cameo. The FO may conclude that his value is likely to never be higher, in which case, it would be prudent for them to explore potential trade options to help the team win now and in the future. Can you imagine how much better off we'd be as a franchise had we traded Hiura in the offseason of 2019-2020? While you did say "early returns", the fact still remains that the revamped hitting development system has proven NOTHING at the major league level, which, in the end, is all that matters. There's good reason to be skeptical when we've seen what they've done with a guy like Hiura, who was supposed to be as "can't miss" with the hit tool as it gets. And then throwing out a phrase like "perpetual contention" on top of it isn't exactly you qualifying your statement. -

This has nothing to do with Rasmussen or Feyereisen. That trade was pretty clearly a win for both sides. What it's about is Adames being a top 10 player the past couple of seasons at perhaps the premium position in the game and the fact that said player is now just entering his prime. Those guys have tremendous value, even with only two years of control remaining. A top 30/40 prospect such as Vargas and back-end top 100 prospect in Pepiot is about as close to an even swap as it gets. Just take a look: -

Pepiot and Vargas for Adames is actually a very even trade. While only controlled for 2 more seasons, Adames is an elite defensive SS with big-time power who is just now entering his prime. And it does make them better in the short run as their only other option at the position is Lux. They may want to focus their spending efforts on pitching and the outfield (i.e. Judge), so not spending as much at SS with Adames could be very appealing to them as opposed to going after one of the big-time FA SS. Also, I don't get why you think "major" changes to last year's group will be made, when the FO has already stated they plan on returning "the core". Granted, that was Stearns who made that statement, but I seriously doubt Arnold thinks differently. -

I think we should wait until the organization has actually produced an everyday position player worth a lick, let alone an all-star, before labeling the development system "improved" and talking about "perpetual contention" upon trading the most dominant starting pitcher in franchise history. Can we really be certain that a guy such as Garrett Mitchell won't turn into the next Hiura/Brett Phillips at the plate with a 41% K rate, SSA notwithstanding? -

Definitely creative, though this roster probably isn't a contender next season. I would note a few things: 1) There is no reason for the Brewers to accept Kikuchi being a part of a Burnes trade. Not at that salary and with a career ERA over 5. TBH, I don't get the Robbie Ray comparison, especially considering that TOR was the team that turned Ray into a Cy Young winner, whereas they weren't able to get anything out of Kikuchi last season. And Ray at least had a previous season where he was an upper tier starting pitcher (2017). Kikuchi has yet to post an ERA under 4 in any season to go along with consistently underwhelming K/BB numbers. Without Kikuchi, the Brewers should still be able to get one of the Jays' catchers (Kirk or Moreno) and Tiedemann. 2) I don't quite understand the logic of replacing Rowdy with Diaz at 1B. Diaz will give you really good BA/OBP numbers for sure, but Diaz is also a butcher at any position and falls well short of Rowdy's power output. Then, consider that Rowdy is due to be one of the biggest beneficiaries in the game of the shift ban and will cost less in both salary and prospects. Just doesn't make sense imo. 3) Not sure Zack Britton is the way to go for upgrading the bullpen. Would be a huge risk for the Brewers even at $6 MIL when he's coming off TJ surgery and his stuff/peripherals have started to measurably decline. -

They want to compete this season, too. Without Burnes, that task becomes a heck of a lot more difficult. Above all else, Attanasio cares about making money. Trading your two best pitchers over such a short period of time amidst increasingly lackluster attendance and fan discontent will not help with that. Paper may be all that should matter, but the real world is not played out on paper. -

Burnes has one of the higher trade values in the game. Definitely the highest for a player with 2 years of control remaining. Any trade will do a significant amount of damage to a team's top 10 prospect list. There's plenty of reason to be skeptical that a team will ultimately meet that asking price. The Brewers certainly aren't going to rush to trade him just because he only has 2 years of control remaining, when his presence at the top of the rotation is the single biggest reason why the Brewers have a chance to make it back to the postseason. They will want every bit of what he's worth to even consider parting with him. I agree with TPlush that we also need to think about this from a team image/marketing standpoint. The front office got absolutely excoriated by the fanbase and the media for the Hader trade. Do we think that Arnold and Attanasio are now going to go ahead the very next offseason and trade the most dominant starting pitcher in franchise history and incite an even greater backlash, particularly during a time when attendance has been relatively lackluster? A Burnes trade may make perfect sense on paper, but, for the aforementioned reasons, the actual chances of it happening are probably less than 50%. -

Robert Gasser? Obviously more would be nice, but that's not "zero".

WAR may undervalue relievers, but position players are still more valuable. Taylor is also a big upgrade over their current outfielders, with the exception of Laureano. -

I wouldn't automatically assume they'll get an offer for Burnes that they can't turn down. They might get lowballed for Burnes, while having a different team exceed their asking price for Adames and/or Woodruff. As far as their overriding goal, the big man himself said the other day that they're "VERY intent" on returning to the postseason in 2022. That becomes a more difficult task were they to trade any of the big three. -

That's your opinion, which you've stated repeatedly, and you're certainly entitled to it. But the likely scenario, even beyond their comments, continues to be that they run it back with the big 3 still in tow. They're not going to trade Burnes/Woodruff/Adames for the sake of trading them while they're still under two years of control. They want to compete at a high level and get back to the playoffs in 2023 and having Burnes/Woodruff at the top of the rotation and Adames at SS almost certainly gives them their best shot to do so. They'll listen to offers, given the realities of the market and the fact they want to keep getting future "bites at the apple", but any trade will have to meet their high asking price and outweigh the immediate costs of losing such a player. -

I think that's where management is leaning too, judging by the "opportunistic" and "very intent on returning to the playoffs in 2023" remarks from Arnold and Attanasio. And then before he stepped down, Stearns said they were going to bring back "the core". They would probably have to be blown away by an offer to trade one of the big 3. They will listen though, as they always do and should. -

But what are the chances of them actually landing DeGrom, Verlander, or Rodon? Like, less than 10%. In that case, to the trade market they go.... As far as an extension, Musgrove and Castillo are recent examples of top tier starting pitchers who decided to forgo their prime FA opportunity and instead sign an extension with the clubs they were recently traded to.
