Brewcrew82’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint (3.0)
UpandIn replied to Brewcrew82's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
They can go after Burnes and then sign him to an extension. As you say, they have the money. And as Brewerfan82 said, it's a starting point. But it's a reasonable starting point. Castillo signing a below market deal doesn't mean Woodruff will as well. He went from Cincy to Seattle and he loved it, so he signed. Woodruff is YOUNGER than Castillo, but it's a mater of months. It's irrelevant. Castillo just signed a team friendly deal and that's probably a good starting point with Woodruff, but it's unlikely he signs that same deal. -
Brewcrew82’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint (3.0)

No, I think he's right. The GM specifically stated after this trade deadline, they were going to devote significant resources into competing...that they think their window is opening. I do think there's a very good chance they go after the top arms on the market(I don't think they sign deGrom or Verlander, but Rodon is certainly in play for them). Their only real salary commitments this year are Chris Davis. Money he's owed from his buyout and his deferred compensation. And...so is Bobby Bonilla. In one of the other deferred deals that doesn't get talked about, Bobby Bo gets 500K a year from the O's. Nothing like Bruce Sutter getting ~50M from the Braves for the 9.1M dollar contract he signed(just getting paid off in the last year or so with a final balloon payment of...9.1M after getting 1.2M since 1990). But that's all beside the point. The POINT is that Baltimore is clearly at the point where they've accumulated the talent, they were quasi competitive this year, and they've still got a loaded farm system. They're going to be going all in. I DON'T think they'll actually give up Grayson Rodriguez+Westburg+Johnson...but that's GOT to be the Brewers starting point. Maybe the Brewers need to throw someone into that deal. Maybe it's an OF prospect(they need a RFer, so if you had to throw in...Mitchell hypothetically, you could tweak that trade). But I don't think that's unreasonable. -
Top 10 prospect? The combo of him and Courio is just going to be a whole lot of fun, watching them develop and hopefully arrive within a few months of each other(which given Quero's advanced defense isn't far fetched). This farm system really has it all...with the possible(definite) exception of any true, blue blood corner IF prospects. They've got young power arms with enormous upside, two Latin American players who could very easily end up in the top 15 by this time next year, if not higher. As was pointed out in another thread, when looking back at what Stearns accomplished during his stewardship of the Brewers organization, the systems he's left in place and the Latin American scouting and developmental program just cannot be understated. The Brewers had VERY little Latin American representation prior to DS. Now we've got a growing academy and several prospects making a lot of noise at key positions.

You stated that he was advising the Mets while serving as the Brewers POBO. You not only inferred, but suggested that he couldn't be trusted with the Brewers IF this were his last year. On top of that, you're going back and re-writing what you said in the original posts...whithout...ACTUALLY re-writing it. You never said he was "as good as gone." You said; You've been beating this drum for a year. Yet when confronted with the facts...that he was very responsible and protective of the Brewers future(arguably to a fault). THIS WASN'T WHAT YOU WERE MOCKED ABOUT! The conspiracy theories in which he was actively working to undermine the Brewers by giving advice to one of their primary competitors this year...throughout the year, and that he couldn't be trusted without a contract. Well...you said the same things last year before we found out this WASN'T the final year of his contract.

Yeah, I don't expect this topic to be a hot one, BUT I didn't know where to put this. https://www.nba.com/news/josh-primo-waived-spurs Josh Primo a lottery pick from just last year(2021) was waived by the Spurs. He was a guy a lot of people thought had both massive upside, but would also be available around the Bucks pick or near the end of the 1st round because he was so young and a bit of a risk. But incredibly talented player. Not much detail around why he was waived. Pretty safe to say it was because of some type of behavior issue Primo had based on how he responded; Not sure if this is him directly owning it and I'd suspect this was released by one of his representatives. Obviously, the priority will be getting this kid's head right as teams don't waive 19 year old players with the upside he has without there being some serious issues. This was also the guy I desperately wanted the Bucks to try and pick last year...which I realize would not have been a good decision, but now you can bring him in, put him on a 2-way...if you're confident that he's undergone the mental health treatment he so clearly needs.

Of course, I was being facetious.

How Will David Stearns' Time in Milwaukee Be Remembered?
UpandIn replied to Tim Muma's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I think one of the main points to remember is that...Stearns is leaving his position as POBO, but he leaves this team well stocked and we'll be reaping the benefits...hopefully of Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, Jeferson Quero...hopefully Gasser and Ruiz and so on and so on will be coming up over the next 3-4 years. So hopefully he'll have left us with the foundation of a young core of offensive players. But this is definitely the most important aspect. We've spent YEARS trying to develop just one stud. We had a guy here or there having various levels of success over the last 30-some years from Cal Eldred's incredible run in 1992 to Ben Sheets having a couple of great years, Yo was a really good, solid, reliable pitcher for a long time...but to develop Burnes, Woodruff, Hader, Williams, to get the most out Chacin, to kinda re-ignite Wade Miley's career, Corey Knebel...I'm still not sure what this pitching school consists of exactly. I know the analytics have played a significant role in it...helping pitchers figure out which pitchers to throw more and which to scrap, whatever it was, it's turned the Brewers into one of the best teams at developing pitching...and he again, he leaves us in pretty good shape with Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Ashby, Houser in our rotation with Gasser and Small expected to contribute. -

How Will David Stearns' Time in Milwaukee Be Remembered?
UpandIn replied to Tim Muma's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Seems like a tacky thing to bring up now...and I'm not sure I understand what a "cocaine playboy," means exactly. Cocaine was widespread in the 1970s and 1980s and used by...MANY players...seems like a strange issue to bring up in 2022. Point is that's regarded by MOST fans are the era with the Brewers only two home grown HOFers who were the best and the 2nd best players on the Brewers lone World Series team and he started his career as a 21 year old in 1978 and through this period, he had a 23.9 WAR. Yeah. Cooper was great as well. I don't think anyone said otherwise...but I'd be willing to be the vast majority of Brewers fans remember that as the Yount/Molitor Brewers. -

I want to re-sign all 3 of 'em...and if we were the LAD...maybe we would(or maybe Seattle suddenly). But unless we make a run this year and get to the WS and fall just short, they should turn those 3 into...at least 7-8 good prospect and a few top 100 depending on when they trade them. Still hope they DO spend to extend one, but we'll see. Either way, moving forward, I hope they're aggressive in extending these young guys and buying out some FA years with team options. But for now, keep developing that pitching, Misiorowski, Gasser, Uribe(who looks like his command has vastly improved)...that's gotta be the priority for this franchise after finding guys who can put the bat on the ball and get on base(and then get themselves over to 2nd). Again, ideally we extend Burnes, but even if we don't extend him or Woody, I'm confident that this team is going to be able to get some impact talent. And I KINDA want them to maybe make that first move this off-season if it means getting something like Miller, Vargas, Stone and a younger arm from the Dodgers for Burnes, or a comparable package...but if they don't, I'm also excited to see if these young guys can give the Brewers the lift they need.
-
He was also one of the guys leading the scouting department or going around scouting when they drafted Corey Ray...so...yeah, time to move on. Nah, I'm happy with the continuity of this organization. IF Stearns goes to either NYM or the Yankees, Stearns is probably going to go to a place where he has a lot of his staff already in place. So thrilled that we'll just be keeping things how they are. We seem like we're really just in a good place right now in terms of developing players, prospects, etc...
-
He did grow up a Mets fan. And Theo Epstein grew up a Red Sox fan. Yet he still left to go run the Cubs. Simply because the Mets asked to talk to him and because he was a Mets fan, that doesn't mean he's just a lock to become the Mets next GM. The Yankees and Dodgers are what I'd view as the two most sought after jobs in the sport. I don't think it's written in stone that he's going to the Mets.
-
Yeah...not going down another one of these stupid rabbit holes with you. I think he was among the best in the game. You're wrong. Cool? You listed Brian Cashman...I can't. And sure...all we have to go off of with regard to our prospects is "circumstantial evidence." I honestly don't even know what that means in this context...
-
I don't think he ends up as a CFer. I think he's a left fielder...and beyond that, I don't know what else to say. I agree, he's an extremely exciting prospect. I think Quero is closer to him than you're suggesting and I wouldn't be shocked if he becomes the better prospect. I'm not going anywhere else.

Finding the 2023 Starting Catcher
UpandIn replied to Eye Black's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
This is important point. Maybe you get your ask for both of them, but...it's unlikely. And there's also a very strong FA pitching group coming up. -
Sure...but he's also a catcher, and with that comes a whole other set of expectations. Defense is the priority with a catcher whereas it's far less of an emphasis with a guy like Chourio. A players age is a big factor...it's just not QUITE as big of a deal to me. Quero being about a year older at HiA but being such an advanced defensive catcher and hitting well...given the value of a catcher vs an OFer, I don't think it's crazy that he ends up being the more valuable of the two. That's more about Quero being undervalued IMO. But yeah, he was incredible this year. He's as exciting a prospect as we've had in a long time. I agreed when people cited Weeks and Braggs as their didn't perform in the minors until after they'd played College Baseball.

Questions about Mark Attanasio from a Norwich City fan
UpandIn replied to littleyellowbirdie's topic in Other Sports
I'd say that pretty much fits what I'd describe Attanasio to a T. Though you'll get PLENTY of Brewers fans who will say he's cheap. I'm not sure some of those fans appreciate that Baseball, unlike Football or Basketball in the US doesn't have a salary cap, it doesn't have the same revenue and teams are more just kinda on their own. Meaning their revenue is largely just what they can generate.(MLB teams do get money from revenue sharing, but the individual TV deals are so disproportionate, small market teams, which the Brewers are, cannot spend like the large markets). I don't have a clue how the finances work in Soccer. If there's a revenue sharing agreement or if they split the TV money, but I believe Attanasio puts the revenue the team generates back into the team and or the facilities, player development, etc.... Without those numbers being made public, it's hard to know exactly, but our payroll while limited, is comparable to those teams in a similar market size. -
Well...I don't worship star players or any athletes, but I'd say it's more than fair to...lets say value a great GM as much as a star player. A GM can certainly do more to contribute to winning than any player can. As for him moving on, I'm good with it. Arnold has been in place for a while now and I trust him and the front office as a whole to keep things going. The concern I do have is that if/when Stearns does leave, he's going to invariably take key personnel with him and it's going to lead to a loss of valuable leaders. Scouts, coaches, whatever it may be. But it would seem like we have a good player development group in place at the moment...particularly as it relates to pitching. So hopefully that continues.

Ok...and when those prospects carry .424 OBP or a .950 OPS through ~2700 MLB At Bats, I'll re-evaluate...but I'm not EVER expecting any prospect to match a historic career or a historic start to a career based on similar minor league numbers. If you're just talking about the MiLB...then I'd still point to Soto putting up a .362./.462/.757 1.218 OPS line about 6 months older and then went right to MLB and put up a .400 OBP. So...yeah, I'm not throwing Chourio in with THOSE players. That's a...LOT to ask or expect of Chourio and it's going to leave people very likely disappointed. I'd say look at Weeks. He had a pretty damn solid big league career and he's being cited as a failure on here because people expected too much. I'm not sure he's going to end up the best player from that Appleton team this year.

Here's the problem with yours...I already said it. Though I have to wonder...does it even really matter what I say? You hear what you'd like to. Take the "I've been around too long to put much stock in prospect RANKINGS." Twice now, once very clearly I explained I was NOT talking about rankings. Yet...it's still showing up in your post. He was FAR better than just "competent."
