Yikes that's Biloxi baseball for you in the year 2024. They open the bottom of the 9th going single, double, single, triple to tie the game 4-4 with no outs. Murray, Warren, and Sparks then each strikeout with the winning run 90ft from home.
I'm going to need someone else's opinion but it looked like to me that DL Hall re-injured himself on one of his last 2 pitches in the first inning. Looked awkward and was cursing when walking back to the dugout.
Cardinals are playing some good baseball right now unfortunately. 2 innings away from being 7-2 since their series in Milwaukee and 2 innings away from sweeping the Orioles who haven't been swept in 2 years. Maybe they aren't quite dead yet.
Watching Craig Yoho immediately following Costello really emphasizes how nasty Yoho is. They have pretty similar pitch mixes and Yoho just gets so much nastier movement on his stuff. I really don't understand why this guy is still in A+ at this point.
Yerlin Rodriguez unfortunately continues to ride the struggle bus. It's 20 grade command with him these days. 4 BB in 1.1 IP today. He's up to 18 BB in 14 IP on the year.
I also was expecting Koenig to go 2 innings to give Blalock an extended time to warm up like he's used to doing. I don't think they option Koenig. Murphy thinks of Koenig as a middle reliever not a shuttle guy (which is fine because he's earned that role). Maybe they DFA White? Ross is likely going on the IL so they could just call up Herget or Junk instead. Then have Myers come up the next time Ross's spot is up in the order.
They should have just used Blalock instead of burning the entire bullpen. Maybe we lose, but the pen stays fresh. Now we lose and our pen is absolutely gassed for the rest of the series. Not sure what the point of calling up Blalock was if we weren't going to use him in a situation where it was super common sense to use him.
Blalock move isn't surprising when you consider the only guys eligible to be called up on the 40-man are Ashby (pitched on 18th and sucks currently) and Uribe (needs to serve 6 game suspension still). Ultimately it came down to Blalock or a AAA pitcher not on the 40-man. Paredes could have been an option but he threw 32 pitches yesterday and likely needs a day or two down. Zastryzny left his last start injured. Blackwood hasn't pitched in 11 days so maybe is injured. Not really any other options besides those 3 to add to the 40.
There's nothing wrong with the Brewers lineup. I don't really see any issues.
1. Turang
2. Contreras
3. Yelich
4. Adames/Hoskins
5. Bauers
6. Adames/Hoskins
7. Ortiz
8. Frelick
9. Chourio
Not really sure what the complaint about the lineup is. We are Top 5 in pretty much every single offensive category.
I have a feeling the Brewers would very much like to extend Contreras, but Contreras seemed pretty intent on eventually becoming a FA when he was asked at the beginning of the year.
That's the most frustrating part. He doesn't even need to be on the edges to have success. He can just pour pitches into the strike zone and have success and he just can't consistently do it. Still very young, but he really hasn't made much improvements in command in the last 12 months. I still feel like he needs to add a considerable amount of weight which I think would help him with consistency.
