  1. It seems like when people in the know post here it inevitably leads to conflict with posters. At some point posters either antagonize them (maybe to get them to give more info?) or think that the person (Gamel/Salome) or people (Agent39's clients) they are close to or represent don't walk on water or cure cancer and draw their ire. I like some of what these posters bring; but I'm not sure its worth the negative PR for the site or the heartburn for the either side. Is there a way to maybe catch these connected posters when they start to prime them for what they will encounter? This is a fan site and there is the whole gambit of brash/polite/knowledgeable/ignorant people that post and read here. All (or most) opinions are welcome. If they aren't prepared to deal with some ignorance/criticism/disagreement/negativity toward their relative or player they should consider not posting here.
  2. Stopping a guy like Jennings is based alot more on positional team defense than whoever is supposed to be guarding him. Not too many individuals can stop that kind of quickness. Golden State basically played no defense whatsoever. The Mavs generally play a little softer zoneish defense and position themselves well traditionally. I agree that he'll have to distribute more and others will have to step up their scoring. Bogut and Ilaysova in particular.
  3. I see what you are saying; it is hard to argue with drafting Braun and Fielder. I still hold the opinion that young/good bats can be found, aquired, and/or developed more easily and cheaply. A plethora of quality young pitching can most likely be found by drafting larger numbers of pitchers and can be turned into bats later (if needed) more easily than vice versa. Our organization has made that switch already; but too late, I think, to save Melvin's job. If he conducts a mad scramble to keep his job, draw fans, or extend the Fielder/Braun window, it will hurt the franchise in the long term.
  4. There have been some especially the past couple of years. What I am saying is that we should focus even more on drafting pitchers (like we have the past 2 years) with our high picks and with many of our other picks as well. Where in the past we have drafted: Weeks, Fielder, Braun, LaPorta, Hardy, Lawrie, among others I would like to see pitchers drafted. The hitters are needed and the hitters are nice; but they are not the valuable commodity that good, young, cheap pitchers are. I used to think the Brewers have had more trouble than most teams in drafting/developing pitchers too; but it seems our success rate is actually about average. That means you have to throw numbers at the problem IMO....basically all in an attempt to NOT have to sign people like Suppan.
  5. This is exactly what I think may be happening (starting last year). Melvin seems to have shifted his focus to RIGHT NOW, maybe because he figures Brauns and Fielders don't come around that often, maybe because he wants to keep his job, maybe because the club wants to continue to draw 3m fans, maybe all three or more. Either way, I think any short term decisions hurt the team's ability to compete long-term. I stopped liking Melvin's moves quite as much as soon as I noticed this shift in focus. The smartest thing to do (in my opinion) is to recognize the mistake of focusing on homegrowing position players more than pitchers, change that focus (seems like that started with the last two drafts), and start the rebuild ASAP. Other people's mediocre pitching is just too darn expensive. Any money should be saved to extend Gallardo when the time is right.
  6. My favorite was "Young, talented and tough" they even had a rap for it to go along with the laser light show. They were talking about Todd Day and Lee Mayberry (and probably Anthony Avent) http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  7. I think a lot of times it is less whining (although that definitely exists in any profession) and is more teachers feeling they have to justify their summers off to people who give them a hard time about it. My wife is a teacher and I always tell her just to embrace it and not to justify the benefit of summers off. Teachers chose the profession and meet all the qualifications necessary to do the job. Anyone has the opportunity to enter the profession if they choose, why justify it? Yeah, teachers get summers off and it is a great benefit of the job. If you want summers off, get your certificate!
  8. My first question is whether or not it would be good idea to break the bank on Fielder. He is my favorite Brewer of all time; but I'm not sure it would be wise to tie up the amount of money it will take into a first baseman that may or may not stay in shape after signing the contract. My bet is that he stays in shape and produces for a long while; but I still think we have to save our money for more important and less replaceable positions. That said, to answer your question, I think after seeing the package we put together for CC that it might be possible. Not probable though.
  9. edited. thank you for correcting that.
  10. Maybe I didn't watch enough games and I don't feel like looking at the numbers right now. I'm sure I'm jealous of someone though.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif My main point is the rest of the post.
  11. I agree to a point. I'm not necessarily excited about the expirings (although I'm not sad about it either) and I'm not necessarily excited for 2011. I'm excited for a time when we are producing our own decent quantity of quality young pitching. The earliest this could be seems to be at least 2-3 years away. I think we'll be competitive until then (in a .500 or over .500 kind of way); but until we don't have to try to trade or sign other people's arms I think we're treading water. I'm less sure about this but until we have proven pitching to spend money on; we may be best served just pocketing it. I like your lock up Gallardo idea. I'm sad that we'll be wasting many of his cheap young years on .500/over .500 teams. The other sad thing is that I think the wait for the young pitching may cost Melvin/Ash their jobs. That may be a justifiable action; but they better be replaced by people just as good at what they do and I doubt they will be. I'm not often jealous; but the bullpen full of 95mph+ quality young arms and the solid and cheap rotation the Twins have made me jealous this post season.
  12. This has been debated a lot; but I still think he meant he would take less than he would make on the open market, not necessarily less than he makes right now. I think we got him at a discount last time because of the pending suspension situation. Maybe the open market is different enough now that we would get him for less; but he is coming off some pretty darn above average years.
  13. Hopefully the Cubs step up to the plate.
  14. Seriously though, maybe you should embrace it. You've tried playing along and that is getting you deeper in trouble. Do what you can to be a good roommate; but for the rest develop the "I'm doing what I can, I am who I am, if you don't like it tough crap" mentality
  15. Too bad we don't have a required reading FAQ with "this is what both sides will say" type of info for newbies about topics like Cameron, Gwynn, historical info on Branyan/Ginter, misspelling "Maddox" and such. Not saying that any one side is right or wrong...just so we don't have to have the same conversations again and again. Half joking.
  16. They see EGOs from all states too; but you're right, definitely more of the ID. Sorry, lame psychology humor.
  17. He should be seeking the best deal possible for his clients. There's a lot more to it than money.
  18. Maybe a position switch or trade?
  19. Why would the Brewers trade him right now? His value is probably lower than it should be, he's young, he's cheap, he's under our control, and he's talented. Melvin doesn't tend to trade players like that. This 'Macha hates young guys' thing is being thrown around as gospel and there's no basis for it. Macha dislikes underperforming and/or immature players. Gamel will figure it out and when he does we'll see his PT and his production go up.
  20. Given how little it matters who the opening day starter is and Gallardo's use since then, it hardly seems like a mark in the "Macha hates young players" column
  21. Who else? Gallardo is pretty young and according to some has been overused. As noted earlier, Escobar has been treated pretty fairly. Prince and Braun are not old. Macha has shown discontent with non-performing youngish players such as Hardy, Hart, McClung, Villanueva, etc... I'm OK with that. Now he DOES go out of his way to reward Kendall for some reason (non-performing veteran). That I can't explain.
  22. I agree. Right now its about maintaining flexibility and getting players in that play hard and the right way, i.e. changing the culture.
