  1. I think if a pitcher ever went to hell, this would be his defense when he took the mound. No, they'd have to go there, then tick satan off, then flick a booger on him after he dished out their initial punishment.
  2. I went Rickey and Tommy John. From the ESPN poll: 7.5% Harold Baines (Statistics) 7.4% Mo Vaughn (Statistics) 6.2% Dan Plesac (Statistics) 6.2% Greg Vaughn (Statistics) 4.7% Jay Bell (Statistics) 4.4% Matt Williams (Statistics) 4.1% Ron Gant Seriously?
  3. Really, they couldn't have traded Dunn if he accepted? Offering him arby just seems to make no sense. He's likely to decline, and even if he accepts you can just trade him for a player you'd rather have (less talent with lower salary or a prospect). That is, unless there's no market for 29 year old players who almost never miss games and can put up a .900 OPS with an OBP just under .400. If so, this is the year for Attanasio to sign a bunch of great players to cheap backloaded deals that will make them insane bargains when the economy recovers.
  4. They'd be even more valuable than they already are. The save stat is just a crappy way to measure WPA. If they go with a simple stat, it should be a variation of the hold. Here's my proposal: 1) Enters game in the final 3 innings. 2) 2 Run lead or less 3) Records at least three outs 4) Does not allow the tying runner to reach base. Or 1) Enters game as a non-starter, regardless of score/lead. 2) Records at least 3 outs. 3) Does not allow a run. This makes a scoreless IP or late-game hold to count the same. I think a hitless 5th should get you at least the same credit as coming in with a 3 run lead in the 9th and allowing 2ER. Yep, every RP would have a bunch of these, but really great middle relievers would look great, and maybe that leads to closers being used in the proper situation to both benefit the team and pad their stats. This also allows a pitcher to get credit for coming in in the 8th, recording 4 outs, then giving way to an effective LOOGY to end the game.
  5. If I didn't think Hart would bounce back somewhat and we'd be dumping him for half price now, I'd be all about landing Abreu.
  6. Plesac was an above-average reliever who enjoyed great longevity, but is nothing remotely close to a player who should even merit discussion of his fit in the hall of fame. Now let's move on to a more compelling case: Mike Timlin. I also demand Todd does a Hall of Fame Trial for Paul Assenmacher.
  7. Do free agent eligible players who accept arbitration get the same no trade protection? I'm pretty sure the answer is "no", and they can be traded at any time. That's how recent articles have made it seem.
  8. It's an absolute lock that Gagne gets a major league contract - we rolled the dice with $10MM last year and someone will certainly do the same with a smaller figure. The question is how much the contract will be for and if he's going to gamble on getting more elsewhere than he'd get with the Brewers. This probably won't happen, and I'd jump at arbitration if I were in his shoes.
  9. The only other way I see it happening (but not so realistic) is if CC does somehow re-sign, and we don't want to risk Sheets accepting and being on the hook for like 35 million between the two. Even then, though, Sheets should be very easy to trade for prospects on a one year $13MM deal, so we still win. You'd have to think at least 12 teams would be willing to give up a solid prospect for Sheets. I think, like you said, the only way an offer isn't made is if there's a strong feeling that the injury will force him to miss at least 2 months (which implies he'd be shaky when he returns).
  10. Why in the world wouldn't we offer him arbitration: would we be afraid of getting a potentially dominant pitcher on a 1-year deal for maybe $13MM. Oh no, I just couldn't imagine how incredible awful that would be. The elbow injury would have to include serious damage for him to not be worth it.
  11. Makes you wonder if Macha got the job in part because he was a Kendall backer Though they reportedly have made up since Kendall's comments after Macha was fired, it wouldn't seem that Macha and Kendall have man crushes on each other.
  12. MN Brew warned me that there seems to be a strong sentiment for OPS here as that is the consistent rebuttal across the board. I think it's a very useful statistic, but more for middle of the order hitters. Why, because there's never anyone on base in front of them and it doesn't matter if they get beyond first base in their AB's? It's not that Roberts didn't slug like a first baseman last year, it's that he didn't slug like a decent catcher. Granted, he didn't play a lot, but you can't expect too much bounce-back at 37. If we needed to save $3.5MM, I'd rather roll the dice with Kapler or a reclamation project and save $9MM.
  13. We finally don't suck and the outcome is other teams realizing the Brewers actually exist and stealing their talent.
  14. FWIW, Consumer Reports was pretty high on the Focus. I wouldn't buy a used Honda in most cases. People think they're sitting on a brick of gold. It would make more sense to just but a new one when it's not much more.
  15. Well, they've been saying all along that this would set the market for a Rob Mackowiak or Wilikin Ruan deal. Let's see how the other shoe drops.
  16. Dwight framing animals is hilarious, as was Michael spending $500 on a bag of salad. Also, I loved Ryan going on a trip with people "from A highschool". Pam/Jim is still lame.
  17. E, if I were the guy who did that, I could make the rest of those things happen.
  18. A few years ago, several local commentators thought Wakamatsu was going to get Washington's job in Texas, so Jack Z's definitely not the first to think highly of him.
  19. Just because there's no news doesn't necessarily mean we aren't 2-3 days away from making one of the biggest trades of the offseason. That's what makes the time leading up to the winter meetings so great - a huge move could come at any time.
  20. 1. The Office 2. The Simpsons 3. Mr Show 4. Married...With Children 5. South Park 6. SNL 7. Cosby Show 8. Beavis and Butthead 9. Aqua Teen Hunger Force 10. Roseanne
  21. I would not be surprised if the Cubs complete a deal in the very near future and acquire Teahan. In the meantime, everyone around us is making moves or at the least posturing to make moves except for us. Good, and I hope they give up something of value. He wouldn't really help them much, as his value would be enhanced by playing 3B, where the cubs don't need his production. Unless they move Soriano to CF and bench Fukudome with Hoffpauir and Teahan in the corners, and Teahan reverts to 2006 form, I don't see the need for him. Now, with our muddy 3B situation, I'd like to see Teahan acquired for a modest price, and I'd guess there are several other teams that would make a better fit than the Cubs.
  22. Wow, that's really cheap for a guy who pitched almost 80 IP with a an ERA in the 3's who's still not 30.
  23. Wow, a Brewer was over-rated. We've come a long way boys!
  24. I think we're talking about Gallardo? I guess I missed him being nicknamed "The Goat Sucker". If it's Zambrano, then never mind, as he does suck, and that would be a pretty good nickname for him.
  25. Maybe it's the thrill-seeker in me, but I usually just fire up the gas grill extra hot and cook the meat a little longer than normal.
