  1. The thing about letting Lopez go is he was the top of the order hitter with speed and contact that this team had been craving for years. Now we had it, but it seems like a luxury they can't really afford if they want to get serious about improving the rotation. I think you have to let him work (after offering arbitration) and hope Weeks comes back healthy. Keep one of Gamel or McGehee, trading the one that gets you better pitching.
  2. Hmmm...I hadn't thought about that. I guess they basically have to since July 1st (I think) is when the new ban comes into affect statewide. Maybe they will add some kind of outdoor "smoker's deck?"
  3. Maybe they'll add another "premium" area, kind of like the martini bar they added in a couple years ago. It would be nice to finally see the big new HD screen Attanasio has talked about wanting since he bought the team. Personally, I wouldn't mind another sit down bar area, like they have on the Loge level (I think?) already. I know space might not permit for that, though. As far as the letter itself, he pretty much said what one would expect. I am really happy that Brewers fans have been so supportive of the team. 3 million fans for an 80 win team is pretty incredible, especially when it's noted that they were 9th overall in attendance this year. I think Mr. Attanasio realizes they can't take this support for granted, and they will be quite active this winter. I wouldn't be surprised to see the payroll increase, at least a little bit.
  4. They cannot afford, at any price, to not sign Fielder long term. Nice analysis, but Satan, er, I mean Scott Boras, won't allow it. My prediction is that maybe this off-season or next off-season, the Brewers WILL offer Prince a huge long term deal. It will make the offer to C.C. this past winter look like peanuts. Boras will still turn it down, and some big market team will offer Prince an insane contract once he hits free agency, the kind that would be completely irresponsible for the Brewers to match. That is why he will be gone, not that the Brewers don't want to pay or keep him.
  5. Wife is making chili for dinner tonight. Her secret ingredient? Beer.
  6. If the Brewers traded Braun I would storm the offices at Miller Park.
  7. Haha, BoSox eliminated. I love it. Papelbon looked shell shocked after the game. Here's to hoping the Twins can rally back against the Yankees. Though I guess the Angels beating the Evil Empire to go to the World Series would be a good storyline.
  8. Why don't they announce it already and get it over with? Seems like this is one of the worst kept secrets in the baseball off-season at this point.
  9. The Dodgers are probably my second favorite NL team, so I was glad to see them win. There's a certain satisfaction in seeing Joe Torre being so successful with the Dodgers after the Yankees showed him the door in such a disrespectful fashion. Plus the Brewers are the only NL Central team to actually win a playoff game since '06, so that makes the Cardinals getting swept just a bit sweeter.
  10. I will back off of my earlier statement on AT&T...the guy showed up early today and got it fixed very promptly. So now I am again a satisfied customer. The flurries I've seen today do bug me, though.
  11. Christmas is fine for me, but then again, we don't have kids. Way less work. That reminds me that our anniversary is in a week and I still don't know what I'm getting my wife. :P What's really bugging me is that one of our business lines has been down for a week. It's been like pulling teeth to get AT&T to fix the situation. No phone and internet is kind of a problem, but I can't even get them to keep a damn service appointment. So this afternoon I'm going to our location to babysit the place and hope to hell someone shows up before 6 PM like they say they will. Was supposed to go to a party this afternoon, too. Ah, the joys of self-employment.
  12. I think the whinyness of the Cards fans is finally catching up with them, in the view of baseball fans and the media nation-wide.
  13. I think Cameron is just a luxury this team probably will not be able to afford next year, if they want to improve the pitching significantly (which is an absolute must that anyone can plainly see). If he's willing to come back for aroun $5-6 million, maybe keep him. Otherwise let him walk elsewhere. We need quality starting pitching much more than an aging but still good CF.
  14. Nolasco's WHIP in the 1st half was 1.39 versus 1.12 in the second half.
  15. Nolasco was bad at the start of the year, went down to the minors to get straightened out, and came back pretty much on fire. I would love to get him, but have my doubts that the Marlins would part with him at this point.
  16. Yep, it's why he's become so incredibly valuable. His defense is no longer a liability, and he's established himself as an elite hitter. It's why the Brewers will probably offer him a huge contract, which Boras will turn down, and he'll eventually leave for an obscene contract elsewhere. We should enjoy him while we can.
  17. I wouldn't mind Davis, but he'll probably be looking for a bigger contract than the Brewers should offer at this point in his career.
  18. Melvin made a good point (I know some may dispute) that having an effective closer under contract like Hoffman could help them attract starting pitchers this winter.
  19. I have a 73 year old client who was a great saver his whole life, made a good living, had few debts and is now retired. It is like pulling teeth to get him to take money from his IRA to live on. He complains constanly about not saving money anymore and spending his savings. His wife is depressed because she wants to travel a bit while they still can health wise, wants to have some new furniture after 20 years of use and he won't budge on his "gotta save every dime" attitude. This is kind of sad. Reminds me of one of my wife's relatives who just passed away. This woman was around 95 or so, and her husband was a WW I (I think) veteran who had passed away in the '70s. She had lived extremely frugally, pretty much seemed like she had nothing. Anyway, when they were cleaning out her place, they found hundreds of pension checks from the army she had never bothered to cash. Seems like she probably did it just so people would feel sorry for her. That's not really relevant to most of this conversation, but it just got me thinking a bit.
  20. I pretty much hate winter. I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life, and I really don't like snow and the cold. Thank goodness I bought a snow blower a couple years back. That thing has saved my back, big time. I'll also throw out my annual suggestion that October is a good time to make sure your house is ready for winter (if you're a home owner). Turn off the outside faucets, make sure your furnace is in good working order, etc.
  21. I have to say, I get tired of how Casey McGehee's great season seems to have gone almost completely unrecognized around here. Yes, I realize it was his first "break out" year, but it was also his first year getting consistent playing time on an MLB roster. He turns 27 next week, so next season is his year 27 season. Everyone talks about how Manny Parra is still "young" and has potential, but he's no younger than McGehee (OK, he's technically about 3 weeks younger, but you get my point). Casey's line on the year: .301/.360/.499/.859. Legitimate ROY candidate. I believe he ended up leading all NL rookies in RBIs, too. Now people are panicking because he's having some minor cleanup surgery. I'm sure most of the same people were the ones panicking when Braun was having some slight injury issues for a couple games early this season. Look how that turned out. I don't think the argument should really be about Gamel vs McGehee, though. I think it should ultimately be who will bring in the better trade (assuming one does get traded this off-season, and I would wager one will). It might not be the Brewers' call at that point. It just feels like some people on this forum almost resent Casey McGehee (and consequently Ken Macha) for taking Gamel's job. I think that is kind of pathetic.
  22. If it's like last year, 9 game (10 game) purchasers get a nice thank you letter and business card from your ticket rep with your tickets.
  23. I'm in favor of trading Gamel, but only for a good young pitcher. It may have to be part of a package, though.
  24. Sheets could be a good option. After having been absent from baseball for a full season, it should not take a ton to get him. Give him an incentive laden deal, assuming he is healthy enough to pitch by Opening Day. The other pitcher (assuming two), will probably be by trade. The Brewers won't be able to win the bidding war for Lackey, and the other FA options below him are not that tantalizing. I think a deal with Atlanta or possibly Baltimore could make a lot of sense.
  25. It seems that way. It used to be that a ball or other piece of equipment would be a valued souvenir for the lucky fan who ended up with it. Now it seems like they're viewed as some sort of cash windfall.
