  1. A lot of people on here just can't stand Haudricourt, period, and will criticize him anytime he posts something negative, no matter the context.
  2. Then again, the more I'm thinking about it...if the Brewers agreed to take Wells along with Halladay, is there a chance they might only have to give up very little to get him? They'd be doing the Jays a huge favor by eating that much salary, you'd think.
  3. Boy, looking at Wells' contact, he's owed a ton of money through 2014. I don't think the Brewers could swing his $20 million+ salary.
  4. I think this is kind of what 1992casey was saying didn't really belong in this thread. Not every thread has to turn into some kind of metric evaluation. Also, Braun didn't really "rip" on anyone. He didn't say "Doug Melvin hasn't done his job and is sitting on his hands, fire him", like some of you are implying. He even acknowledged that making a trade would be very difficult right now.
  5. Yeah, I saw Ken Rosenthal speculates that either the Phillies or Brewers would probably be the best fit for Toronto. I would give up either Escobar or Gamel for Roy Halladay (but not both). That said, we'd probably have to do something like Escobar/Parra/Lawrie/etc to get him, like you said.
  6. I guess I'm partly dumbfounded by some of the anti-Braun sentiment on this board. This is a special kind of player that can carry our team for the next several years. I think all the comments about him being "arrogant" and "cocky" are just way overblown. Especially compared to many other players around baseball. I also think what he actually said on Sunday was also overblown. While he maybe stepped over the line just a bit with his comments, I appreciate having a player who speaks his mind and doesn't just use "athletespeak", like I said before. Having said that, while I think Melvin had a right to speak back against what Braun said, I don't think it was a smart thing to do. He's only going to alienate the fan base (and maybe even the owner) against himself with those kinds of statements, especially directed toward one of the most popular players on the team. This is something that should have been handled in private. I hope, like others have suggested, maybe Mr. Attanasio can step in and put an end to this before it spirals into something bigger.
  7. I can't believe the Blue Jays will possibly trade Halladay unless they absolutely must dump salary.
  8. I'd be down with those. I can always use a couple extra can or bottle coozies to keep in the car.
  9. It helps that Casey McGehee has stepped up and been a very good hitter so far this season. Since realistically Melvin probably won't be able to get both a starting pitcher and a superior position player (ie. not just a bench or backup guy) I would rather see another starting pitcher brought into the fold.
  10. Yeah, I agree with those saying that it's nice to not hear the usual "athletespeak" and that Braun is basically just saying what everyone is thinking anyway. It's been no secret since before the season started that the Brewers would have to go out and get another starting pitcher if they want to remain competitive this year. I also think that since Braun is the only one who has stepped up to the plate, put his money where his mouth is, and actually signed a long term contract, he has a bit more right to say what's on his mind. At least I think that is how the average fan sees it.
  11. It's easy to say "don't settle for Doug Davis", but what else is out there that Melvin could actually acquire right now? If he tries to wait things out too long, the Brewers could slip further out of contention, and there could just as easily still be a drought of quality starting pitchers available. We're not the only team after pitching right now, either. I'm not excited by Davis myself, but we can't let his past performance with this team cloud the fact that he would be a valuable addition at this point. Let's face it, he would step in and instantly be the #2 pitcher on this team right now. I think trading for a Cliff Lee or whoever is simply a pipe dream at this point. We need to set our expectation a bit lower right now, unfortunately.
  12. I don't know...I don't see why the Brewers should have to give up to much to get Davis. He's just a rental, but still one that is owed a decent chunk of change this year. Shouldn't have to give up anything close to what they gave up in the Sabathia trade to get him. Arizona does have the advantage of not too many pitchers being on the market, though.
  13. That didn't look like strike three on McGehee to me. Oh well...
  14. Well, definitely it's going to be "put up or shut up" time in regards to what the Brewers want to do with Escobar soon enough.
  15. Brewers have had their chances to get back in but haven't been able to capitalize. Disappointing.
  16. What an ugly night. I think I'll be turning this one off early.
  17. McClung did look bad that first inning, but when the Crew comes back and halves the Cubs' lead the next inning, it makes all the hyperbole around here seem pretty ridiculous. They play 9 for a reason.
  18. The only "rumors" Sheets was really brought up in were fan proposals and the usual "The Red Sox should go after Sheets!" type national media schlock. I don't recall hearing one substantive rumor involving him.
  19. And I have no problem with them sending him down to Nashville if that is what they decide to do. I'm not sure what better option there really is for the bench right now.
  20. It's relevant because where else will you play him? Counsell and McGehee are both hitting around .300. Playing them both is what is best for the team right now. Since I don't think they're going to sit Hart and suddenly make Gamel a right fielder, I don't know what other options there are. Maybe they also figure Gamel is a better bench option than Heether (who I had never even really heard about until suddenly this season, which makes me rather pessimistic about his realistic potential contributions), or some other AAA call up.
  21. I was actually thinking at the game towards the end, "This is the game that was supposed to happen yesterday."
  22. I have no doubt Gamel will be better than McGehee in the long term. But right now McGehee is performing better (at least at the plate) than Gamel is. You can finger point at Macha, Melvin, whoever, but McGehee had a very hot June, while Gamel has been fairly inconsistent (and yes, I realize that may partly be due to inconsitent ABs). This isn't like 2004 where the team should just be playing the young guys all the time to get them playing experience at the MLB level. We are in the thick of the playoff hunt and Macha has to do everything he can to win. If that means sitting a rookie (no matter how "special") sometimes or pinch hitting for him, I don't see how anyone can fault him for it. Sorry to say, but Gamel's development as a player is a secondary priority to the needs of the team in regards to making the playoffs at this juncture.
  23. I think "La Raza" in terms of "race" means more like "the people" than a racing event.
  24. Well, considering how the expectation is to make the playoffs again, I don't think you can really blame him for that. It's not Macha's job to worry about how much service time guys are accumulating, it's Doug Melvin's.
