  1. Jon Garland doesn't excite me, that's for sure. However, assuming the Brewers cannot re-sign Sabathia or Sheets, that leaves a huge gap in the starting pitching rotation. Also, Gallardo is coming off injuries from last season (yes, I know Gallardo pitched at the end there, but he was used sparingly). Another durability guy like Garland might fit nicely with a Gallardo/Parra/Bush/Suppan rotation.
  2. This will soon just be another reason to hate the Yankees. I understand they have a right to offer as much as they want to any player, but the way that story is worded, it almost sounds like bragging on their part.
  3. Uh...he's going to be our number 2 or 3 starter, the way things are going.
  4. My concerns are similar to yours. I'm worried we will get none of the following - Sabathia, Sheets, or Peavey. Those are the only three free agent pitchers that really interest me at this point. We'll be forced to trade away a position player to get a good starting pitcher, or overpay for a decent starter who will be more at Suppan's level, like you mentioned. I am also worried the offense will not be improved at all. Our guys aren't _that_ young anymore, and I don't have that much faith that the cumulative "learning" improvements they will make will be enough to improve on last year's offense. Adding one quality bat to the lineup somewhere would help a ton.
  5. The question is, do you think Wood is less risky than Hoffman at this point? I'm not really sure either way.
  6. The idea that Hoffman declined drastically last year is ludicrous. Go look at his stats. Yes, he's 41, but age isn't as much of an issue with relief pitchers.
  7. There were indeed quite a few reports of that. I don't think it's a question of if Jack Z would trade Ichiro, it's a question of whether or not Seattle's ownership (Nintendo) would allow Ichiro to be traded. I'm guessing no at this point, as he probably still brings in enough merchandise sales and media revenue to make up for his huge contract. But, I really think he'd look good in the Brewers' lineup.
  8. I too am surprised. He's only, what? 36, I believe. You would have believed that after the high of making the playoffs, he would have wanted to stick around at least one more year to try again. For what it's worth, Homer was talking this afternoon on 540 AM that the Doug Melvin had indeed planned to pick up his option. I am disappointed to see him go, but you have to respect a man who chooses time with his family over millions of dollars for one year of work, as crazy as that sounds.
  9. Are you sure that's really him, or did you just take a sharpie and draw the facial hair on him? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  10. Well, at least many of us will finally get to try the product we've been bombarded with ads for, for years now. I actually like Culver's, though I agree their food isn't as good as it used to be. I'd still rather eat there than McDonald's, Burger King, etc.
  11. What's bugging me? Kind of a small pet peeve, but I was watching FOX 6 on Sunday night to enjoy Simpsons, Family Guy, etc. Every single freaking commercial break, they bombard you with promos for their evening newscast, their morning show, and how great their reporters are in general. Personally, I dislike FOX 6 for some reasons I won't get into here, but watch their station because they're the only FOX affiliate we get in HD on our cable (Charter). Enough with the promos already, though! If I didn't care about your newscast about "the deadly high school sport that isn't what you think" after the first two dozen promos in an hour, the next dozen won't dissuade me. Also what bugs me are repair men that don't give you a specific appointment time...only "tomorrow morning", and then aren't there by 11 AM...and also don't return your phone calls to top it off.
  12. So, is it likely we won't hear anything about Cameron staying or going until after CC signs somewhere (Brewers or not)?
  13. I don't see how signing Hoffman for 7 or 8 million is any more of a risk than signing Gagne for 10 million was last year. Seems like a pretty low risk option to me. Even if he would falter a bit, we would still probably have Torres, McClung, and Villanueva to fall back on if needed. Age isn't as much of a problem with relievers as it is with position players, so even though he's 41, it's not that bothersome to me. Heck, Brian Shouse was one of our most effective relievers last year, and he was the oldest guy on the roster.
  14. Since it wasn't mentioned in the Trenni thread, I thought it would be worth bumping this one. Any new details? Less than two months before this thing launches. Should be pretty cool.
  15. Haudricourt did report on the Sabathia/Jeter conversation, as I recall. I don't get why the Giants would go out and sign Sabathia. As noted, they already have one pitcher with a monster contract. Also, they're probably still a year or two away from being serious contenders. I know he lives out there, but I doubt he's going to take some deep discount to play there.
  16. They needed to add some pop to their lineup, and this certainly does that. I'm just glad he's not going to a team in the NL Central, like others said, as had been rumored.
  17. Between the Cubs possibly getting Peavy and the Cards looking to acquire Holliday, it looks like next year's NL Central will again be pretty tough...
  18. Well, usually a former manager as a bench coach is seen as a good thing. He certainly knows about managing a contending team, and being in high pressure situations, even if the Mets did "choke" the last couple of seasons.
  19. Maybe there should be a new thread called: "Why Jeff Suppan sucks so much," or "Why we hate Jeff Suppan." But I hope Ennder's final line of his post rings true.
  20. Awful compared to what? Let's face it, the basic job of a sports in-game or sideline reporter is not that tough, other than thinking of new ways to ask questions like "You had a big hit in the 5th inning, can you tell us about that?" and reporting on what the manager talked about before the game. I don't know how you can call Trenni awful compared to most other people in her occupation.
  21. Why are people talking about Suppan and his contract (yet again) in this thread? It really doesn't have much bearing on whether or not Sabathia will re-sign with the Brewers.
  22. I'm thinking about canceling my XM. I actually do like it (especially the MLB channel), but the sound quality sucks, and doesn't look to improve with Mel "Let's push Howard Stern and nothing else" Karmazin at the helm of the new XM/Sirius company. They've already cut a couple channels I liked, too. I just need some kind of decent alternative, as most of the radio stations in the area are abysmal as far as music selection.
  23. Well, 127 million over 6 years works out to be about 21 million per. That might be a bargain in just two or three years. Assuming CC stays healthy, the Brewers could always flip him down the line in a trade, with that type of contract.
  24. I'd be for the Brewers doing that, even with the risk involved. I just don't see how some other team isn't going to offer him a little bit more per year at that point, though.
