  1. I just think good (and cheap!) catching is so hard to come by these days that I'd have to be blown away by an offer to trade either one. There are reasons the Rod Barajas and Henry Blanco types still have jobs.
  2. I'm convinced a hard salary cap in MLB just wouldn't work, for many of the reasons already laid out in this thread. MLB is very different from the NFL, NBA, etc.
  3. ESPN has a really nice article up that displays and ranks the upcoming season's batting practice hats for all 30 teams. Brewers have two designs. http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/fandom/post/_/id/16228/first-look-new-mlb-batting-practice-caps Here are the Brewers' ones if you don't feel like clicking the link: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8352/8309612773_7722ec0dd3.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8081/8309612695_e670518455.jpg
  4. I kind of disagree. I think a small market team either has to be building or contending. Just sort of being kind of competitive is a very bad place.
  5. They'll still be bad next year, but in 2-3 years we'd better watch out.
  6. A one year deal for $1.3 million might not be the end of the world for him, but such a fall from grace from where he was three years ago with the Brewers.
  7. A few years ago I picked out Gorzelanny as someone the Brewers could eventually target (back when he was with the Pirates). Didn't think it would be as a reliever, but I think this is a nice move by Melvin.
  8. Melvin had better at least explore the trade market this winter.
  9. Being reported as done by Adam Rubin of ESPN. More details forthcoming.
  10. I guess I'd like to know what moves these folks think we should be doing? Should we have tried to beat out the Angels for Hamilton or the Red Sox on Dempster?
  11. I've said for much of this off-season that I figured if Melvin makes any big moves, it's going to be through a trade and not free agency. I'm perfectly fine with him not overpaying for a mediocre starting pitcher or reliever through free agency. In the past I've been one of those who's been in favor of the Brewers being aggressive...but this winter is showing that the team might be better served to take a step back in 2013, maybe saving on payroll some, and then "going for it" again in 2014. We basically have to accept that Milwaukee is a small market team again and can't swim with the big sharks in free agency.
  12. Yup. Five years, $80 million it sounds like. Tigers had to up their original bid to get him, though.
  13. It makes a ton of sense to explore trading Hart at this point with how this off-season has gone, but I fear Melvin won't even kick any tires. I love Corey Hart as a Brewer and yeah, it would be nice to see him extended...but this off-season is showing that teams like the Brewers can't afford to give out extensions to aging players anymore. The team has to get younger and cheaper, and dealing Hart now could go a long ways toward accomplishing that.
  14. Bingo. We're seeing the re inflation of baseball contracts this offseason.
  15. There's some speculation of them maybe trading Bourjos, I guess.
  16. Being reported by the usuals on Twitter.
  17. I just made the comment on Twitter that this off-season shows that the Brewers (and probably many other teams) are back to being small market. All this new TV money has made the big markets even bigger by comparison.
  18. It's a big risk for the Angels, but one they can afford to make. It's getting abundantly clear that teams like the Brewers can't wade into the FA pool anymore with all this new local TV revenue coming in. I really think Melvin needs to start shopping Hart and Gomez around now.
  19. It's all over Twitter. Five year deal.
  20. I remember a few years ago reading a very well reasoned article that explained why a hard cap would not work in baseball. I wish I could find a link or remembered who wrote it.
  21. I think they both were.
  22. To me, Aoki doesn't look like a player who is suddenly going to decline. He might regress a bit defensively as he gets older, but he seems like the kind of batter who will remain fairly productive for a long time. Anyway, he is very cheap for what he provides.
  23. I don't think so. Anyway, what incentive would Gallardo really have to re-sign at this point? He'll probably be able to get himself a huge contract in a couple years if he stays healthy and performing to his career norms.
