  1. He's pretty much carrying the team right now.
  2. John Olerud 53.7 Will Clark 53.2 Robin Ventura 52.3 Jeff Kent 51.9 Bernie Williams 45.9 Kent is probably the only one on this list with a shot at getting into the Hall, and he was much more dominant at his position than Konerko has been.
  3. Yup, great outing last night by Fiers. Just what the doctor ordered. A little unsettling that the team couldn't score after the first inning, but that's not on the pitching. I really hope Estrada can be used in the bullpen when he comes back. The team really needs some depth to the relief corps.
  4. I think speculating that there's some conspiracy and Lucroy punched something (or someone) is pretty silly. If he was going to make up a story, why would he make it be something lame like having a suitcase dropped on his hand by his wife? Makes his wife look careless/stupid for one thing.
  5. Someone on the team must have made a deal with Satan last year to make it to the NLCS, and now it's payback time. Seriously, this would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.
  6. It was definitely a great one. The twists with Joan and Peggy have both seemed inevitable, but it was interesting how they got there.
  7. There was a similar thread in the collecting forum not long ago. The consensus was that these cards are probably pretty much worthless. Your best bet would probably just be giving them to someone, or selling them as a big lot (but you won't get much for them at all).
  8. Let's not forget that two big holes in the lineup are Weeks and Ramirez, who are both established veteran players. What is he supposed to do? Bench both of them or teach them how to hit better? At least Ramirez has been coming around, but there is only so much the manager can do in situations like this.
  9. Here's baseball-reference.com's list of Konerko's most similar batters through age 35: Fred McGriff (934) Derrek Lee (902) Carlos Lee (886) Orlando Cepeda (886) * David Ortiz (884) Reggie Jackson (883) * Gil Hodges (882) Carlos Delgado (878) Rafael Palmeiro (871) Dale Murphy (864) Very interesting that McGriff is at the top of the list. You also have two Hall of Famers and another guy who would be a slam dunk to get in if not for PEDs (Palmeiro). I have a feeling if he gets to near 500 homers, he could well get in. To me, he seems like he's more in the "very good" category.
  10. Hairston being re-signed would have been nice, but doubt it would have made up for Gamel, Gonzalez, Izturis, Narveson, and Estrada all ending up on the DL in a very short time span.
  11. For your type of setup, forget about a soundbar. Home theater systems definitely aren't "dying". I'm not sure where you've gotten that idea from. Soundbars are OK for bedrooms and other secondary listening areas, but I wouldn't bother with one for any type of serious home theater setup, espeically in an open concept room. I would start looking at receivers and go from there. You can get an excellent home theater receiver for less than $500 these days, with plenty of HDMI inputs, Dolby and DTS HD surround sound formats, etc. Look for one with a powered zone 2 output for your speakers in the other room.
  12. To me, Peralta's numbers in AAA this season are pretty irrelevant to the discussion of whether or not he should be the interim #5 right now. I don't see how you can say his performance so far this season is "irrelevant." I would say it's very relevant, especially since there is still a chance the team could turn things around in a weak division and clearly isn't throwing in the towel yet.
  13. If the team doesn't start playing significantly better over the next 30 days, I think they'll have to sell. I don't know how you can take a look at the team right now, the potential losses of Greinke, Marcum, and K-Rod, and think this team is anywhere close to contending next season. It's time to load up on young, high upside players that can help in a season or two. I really don't think Melvin is going to trade for another Kevin Mench or Scott Linebrink, though I've been wrong before. I said on Twitter yesterday, that if this team is not looking like a contender by the end of June, the team should put everyone not named Braun, Gallardo, or Lucroy on the table. No fire sales, but make everyone available in exchange for high upside young players. If the attendance takes a hit, so be it. Payroll will probably be back down next season anyway.
  14. There are very good reasons to not call up Peralta or Thornburg yet. I'm not sure what people want at this point. Fiers should be OK as the #5 starter, if it's indeed him that gets the call.
  15. Yeah, having a cost controlled starting catcher who is showing he can be this good with the bat is definitely something to be excited about. His current line: .348/.389/.587 /.976 If that's not something to be excited about, I don't know what is.
  16. It's quickly becoming time to think about selling some pieces, and it's simply due to injuries. It's becoming comical how the hurt players are piling up.
  17. Is Lawrie pretty good at air mailing throws over the first baseman?
  18. The minor league system would look a lot better if we had gotten the comp picks we theoretically should have for Sabathia and Sheets, but that is not Melvins fault. Crew wants the Brewers to be run like the Rays, and it's not going to happen. I would say our long term future is much brighter than theirs anyway.
  19. He'll probably get in based on the fact that he's a big home run guy in the "post steroid era." As far as I know there's never been any suspicion of PED use on Dunn.
  20. I'd rather give Bianchi or someone else already in the system a shot at this point. I loved Bill Hall as a Brewer, but his days of being even a decent player are long over.
  21. The funny thing is, Pete Rose these days probably makes more money and gets more attention from being out of the Hall than in it. I've been torn on this issue for a long time. On one hand, I sort of think he's paid his dues, and just putting him in would sort of make him go away. On the other, he broke a rule that every player has drilled into their head that you don't break. You can spitball, take PEDs, use a corked bat, whatever...but you don't bet on baseball.
  22. Apparently Melvin already said earlier today that Thornburg isn't being considered right now.
  23. Some rumors are starting to swirl on Twitter and elsewhere that the Steinbrenner family may be exploring the idea of selling the Yankees. Would be interesting if it's indeed true.
  24. If it gets to be late June and the team is still in the basement, you just have to start shopping around Greinke (along with Marcum, K-Rod, etc). There is no point in trying to hold out hope Greinke is going to sign a long term deal at this point. He's going to break the bank in free agency with the way he's pitching this season.
  25. Yup. I don't want to go back to scenes like this: http://mlblogsthemaseplace.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/mp602095b15d1.jpg?w=660&h=440
