  1. Does it matter? We're going for it this year, and to a certain extent next year. The only downside to that ranking is that it means we probably don't have anything other than Gamel that we could use as trade bait for a mid-year acquisition if we need something. There is plenty of time to rebuild the farm system in the next two years.
  2. The DD laws are messed up. Personally I think they should go back to .1 BAC, but with much stiffer fines for first violations and second violations should be at .08 BAC , and much more severe. It's the repeat offenders that I hate. Those are people that don't give a rip about anyone else. Anyone can make a mistake once and drive drunk and get caught, especially given variations in alcohol content in drinks and people's reaction to it. The criminals that do it over and over again and get caught and have no remorse are the problem. I don't have a problem with 51 years for a repeat offender that killed someone. They should do that with every repeat offender.
  3. Any chance we sign Johnny Damon to play CF? I know it's been two years since he play CF, and he wasn't that great then, and he has no arm, but he still is pretty good at getting on base and is a left handed stick. He made $8M last year, but nobody has signed him yet, so maybe we could get him at a discount. I think he'd be a pretty good platoon with Gomez.
  4. Unless they don't want to give him a press conference or the opening day start due to the social anxiety deal?
  5. I would think Thatcher would look good in our bullpen too. But overall Doug's done good. You know Doug's been a pretty good trader, and other guys in the front office handle the draft, if we could come up with a 3rd guy to handle outside free agent contracts, we'd have the perfect front office.
  6. Worry? I only hope he has an out clause in his contract in case there was an opening in Chicago. Good ridance.
  7. I emailed a buddy of mine today about this and his reply, "So I guess there's an opening in the cubs broadcast booth for Cory Provus." I'm sorry that Ron had to die, but...
  8. They just want to wait until the WS is over to announce it? Why go through with doing second interviews on the final 4?
  9. Do you think it's odd that we've got the hitting and pitching coaches in place before hiring the manager? I thought most managers usually picked their own staff. I have no idea if it's important to change the clubhouse atmosphere or team decorum or whatever, but it would seem to be that's hard to do if you bring back most of the staff. Kind of makes the new manager look like some sort of substitute teacher doens't it?
  10. Great, Doug's gone Hollywood on us. This is going to end just like it did when the players went on that soap opera. Not even going to bother renewing the season tickets.
  11. Does anyone remember when Braun and Prince started doing their boxing celebration after a HR? I don't remember them doing it when Yost was the manager. I thought it started Macha's first year, but they didn't start doing it right away, it was a month or two into the season. That's my recollection at least. I wonder if that was a reaction to Macha's old school ways. Or I could just be way off base.
  12. Ted Simmons won't be back with the Padres. I wouldn't mind him, although he was part of the Yost brain trust that blew up and now the bench coach for the padres that couldn't seal the deal either. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/a...id=mlb&partnerId=rss_mlb As expected, bench coach Ted Simmons won't return in 2011. Simmons wants to be a Major League manager. Simmons and Padres first-base coach Rick Renteria as well as hitting coach Randy Ready are expected to get interviews of managerial openings in the coming weeks
  13. I suppose that is the solution to having your grill stolen, bring a cheap one that you don't care if it gets stolen. Or bring one so big that it can't be carried off. I think I see people bringing in the big ones more often then I remember. I wonder if that is part of the reason. Can't just walk off with a full sized grill. I have not tried the flamediscs. How are they price wise to charcoal?
  14. This is an interesting topic. I've never had a grill stolen at Miller Park or County Stadium, but I generally had a pretty old grill that was really rusty. I wonder how many complaints the brewers or the police get about theft. There are a lot of grills left out during the games so I wouldn't be surprised if one a game was taken.
  15. I'm calling it, Braun's getting plunked before the game is over. He did a little fist pump while rounding second. No way Tony lets that go.
  16. +1 Castro will likely add some additional power since he's so young I don't Escobar will ever have 20 HR pop in his bat.
  17. It's Castro, and I don't think it's even close. Castro is 3 years younger and is putting up a better season than Escobar is right now even if you adjust for the high BABIP. He's really killing escobar in slugging .439 to 341. Right now Castro has 2.3 WAR and Escobar is 0.7. Castro has spent more time in the majors than he spent in AA. (The only caveat being that Cstro is really 20 and not 25, but I think they've tightened up on those ages for the latin players.) Escobar had 40 games in the bigs coming into this year and he's not showing anything close to what Castro is doing. Escobar has the better glove but the stick has to come around and I'm not sure it will at least not enough to end up being the more productive player.
  18. Does it? We get the same pick next year. If we sign a couple of good pitchers with our two first round picks quickly next year they won't be that far behind where Covey would have been. Covey wasn't going to pictch at all this year for the brewers from what I understand.
  19. But Axeford didn't enter the game in a save situation. So how could that mistake be made just because he was writing the story before the game was over? I could see your point if Axe entered the game in a save situation blew the save and vultured the win where that mistake could be made. But there's not reason for AW to be writing anything about Axe's save in this game that would require him to change it later.
  20. Because he's one year away from becoming eligible for the full MLB pension. It'd be financially advisable to pay a team 450K to put him on the MLB roster next season so he can collect the 130K annual pension baseball players get when he's eligible for it. How much is the difference between the full MLB pension and a player with 9 years of service time?
  21. Man, do I NOT miss the midwest. My favorite bars Tweet their latest beer lists . . . Yeah, cause there aren't any bars in Milwaukee with beers on tap similar to that.
  22. I would think it will be a cold day in hell when you see the players union lobby to fine pitchers $25k. Either Doug is just trying to pass the buck and get on to more pressing issues, or he's starting to lose it if he really thinks that has any chance of happening.
  23. I don't think that's correct. If that was the case than wouldn't anyone who started the year on the 15 day DL not be on the all star ballot? Are you telling me that if Prince or Braun started the season on the DL they aren't going to be on the all star ballot?
  24. I'm really surprised by the mostly positive reaction to this deal. In spring training the organization thought so little of him they left him off the all star ballot for a 40 year old OF who had been out of the game for a year. Now he gets an extension. And what has really changed in his performance? According to FANgraphs his walk rate is down while his strikeouts are up. The only reason he's putting up All Star numbers is that his HR rate and shot up. And it appears that rate is not sustainable, as he's a leader in HRs that just cleared the fence. Corey appears to be similar to Jason Werth. Werth put up huge HR numbers last year, but a lot of them just cleared the fence like Hart this year. Werth's HR numbers plunged this year, although his double numbers have gone up, making him nearly as valuable as he was the prior year. I guess we can hope if that happens to Hart if/when his HR numbers come back to earth.
