  1. I've been thinking along these lines, too. Anything that helps the Mets get north of 90 wins is going to hurt the Brewers' chances of getting the WC. (And, obviously, it pulls the Brewers in the opposite direction by depleting the rotation.)
  2. In another thread, I posted some stats about Kendall's production over the latter 2/3 of 2008. After June 1 (so the final 100 games), he was .241/.321./.317. He was especially miserable in Sept. (.202/.295/.298). Seeing these numbers has made me think a bit about his overall value. I know the argument in his defense, which is (appropriately enough) defense. It's said that he handles the staff especially well, etc., and that this sort of evens out his deficiencies as a hitter. I'm not necessarily disputing that, but I'm wondering if there's any real quantifiable evidence to back it up. I guess what I'm resisting is cliche-mongering. To me, it seems as though the praise of Kendall is typical of what's said (across the board in professional sports) by sportswriters, broadcasters, and fans about nice-guy veterans: their contributions aren't necessarily tangible. They play great defense. They are "leaders" and help out the younger players. Again, I'm not necessarily disputing that, but I'm wondering how much bearing it has on wins and losses. Can you show that it really impacts a team's performance? Or does it just make everybody feel better? (And, just for the record, I don't intend this to be a "trade Kendall" thread. I know he's going to catch a bazillion games for the Brewers this year.)
  3. I'm a very grudging O's fan (B'more native, lifelong fan who detests Peter Angelos), I like this move a lot. Pie could still develop into something good at the MLB level.
  4. In terms of playoff chances, I feel uneasy not only about the rotation but also C, 2B, and 3B. After June 1 (so the final 100 games), Kendall was .241/.321./.317. I know that he's great behind the dish, etc., but watching him play in Sept. (.202/.295/.298) made me wonder how much gas he has left in the tank. (I'm hoping that it was just fatigue and that Macha will not try to have him start 150 games, which seemed to be Ned's sadistic goal.) Rickie is . . . Rickie. I suspect that we'll be in for another semi-confounding campaign there. If he figures it out at the plate and plays marginally competent D, I'll like the team's chances a great deal more. I don't know what to expect at 3B, frankly. Again, all of this stuff could work out favorably -- Yo could be an ace, Rickie could blossom into Jackie Robinson, and so forth. But I just don't see the planets aligning this time around. There are just too many question marks.
  5. Maybe, if we're lucky, Sheets and Gallardo will be a wash, but Sabathia pitched 130 pretty much fantastic innings down the stretch. There's a giant void now in terms of replacing that.
  6. I'm not totally disagreeing, but that seems like a big difference in the front of the rotation. We're talking about (very roughly) substituting maybe a whole season of Gallardo for about 60% of Sabathia and 75% of Sheets. I agree that finding a competent starter would help stabilize things overall in the rotation -- no doubt about that -- but I cringe to think about what could happen when guys get injured/fatigued.
  7. I look at it this way: the team barely scraped into the WC in '08. Is the '09 version of the team better or worse than that one? In my assessment, it's worse, especially in terms of the rotation, so I find it hard to be optimistic about the playoffs. (A winning record? Yeah, I think so.)
  8. I think it's hilarious that Sheets is getting lumped together with those scrubs. He's more durable and a much better pitcher than any of the others. Someone is most likely gonna get quite the bargain, even if Sheets continues to slowly decline.Yeah, mentioning Sheets in the breath as Kris Benson seems a little out of whack.
  9. At this point, I'd be fine with Wolf, if the price was right. His career ERA+ is right about 100, so he's average. And that's not a bad thing, for the middle/back of the rotation. What bugs me about DM in this case is that there isn't any apparent sense of urgency to boost the rotation. I'm assuming that he's waiting for the right deal to come along, but I think he's running the risk of going into the season shorthanded.
  10. I believe Melvin will look at the available starters Wolf, Looper, and others and then look into the trade route to see if there are any pitchers available in a trade. The rotation we have right now is probably what it will be on opening day.You guys feel better about the current rotation than I do. I guess it might be OK to start out with the current 5 in April, but I just don't see how they are going to crank out 30-ish starts each through September. I have kind of groaned at the idea of Wolf, but he's actually . . . well, he's not absolutely horrible. He pitched well enough last year to get 33 starts. (This is in no way to be taken as a ringing endorsement, obviously.)
  11. Sooner or later, the audio of that 911 call is going to be released. The WSJ reported last month: "The sounds recorded from the minute-long call were described as a scream and the sounds of struggle, according to sworn statements from Madison police included in a search warrant that had been sealed for several months but unintentionally released on Dec. 3."
  12. Given how badly McGwire has been drubbed in the voting, I don't see how Bonds and Clemens make it. You have (roughly) the same kind of obvious PED usage and even more blatant lying/evasion after the fact. (As in criminal prosecution for it, potentially.) I guess there could be voters who somehow rationalize that they were HOF-worthy before they engaged in rampant cheating/lying, but no way am I among that crowd.
  13. Maybe he can change the reference to "Lou," too?
  14. That AL West looks like the AFC West this year.
  15. http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bellhma01.shtml 27 HR and 56 RBI in 2002. How is that even possible? 2001: 1 HR2002: 27 HR 2003: 2 HR Very Brady Andersonesque.....
  16. The sister (Danielle) could be a two-fer: she could replace Trenni in our hearts and maybe get some innings in the bullpen. And she's Canadian. Someone get DM on the phone....
  17. I didn't closely follow Macha during his tenure in Oakland. Does anybody have a sense about how long his leash might be in a situation like this?
  18. If he can play 3B, I'm all for it.
  19. I got scared today thinking about the chances of the current crop of 5 (Yo, Manny, Bush, Suppan, and McClung) each making basically 32 starts. That seems improbable at best, especially at the back end.
  20. I liked this line from the MLB.com piece: "Hoffman, 41, is intent on reaching the 600-save plateau and won't sign anywhere if he doesn't have the chance to be the closer." That does seem like the big stumbling block, in terms of him going to LA.
  21. I'm weirdly fascinated by the Portishead love on BF.net. (Count me in, by the way.)
  22. I hate the "eyeing" thing. What the heck does that mean? They talked about it over the water cooler one day?
  23. And so it begins (courtesy of "Truth and Rumors"). Can we expect this for every good FA?
  24. Yes, with the weather gods.
  25. Low 80's in high school, which was like a billion years ago. A decent curve, straight change, and a knuckleball that occasionally worked. (FWIW, my daughter, who is 7, has some serious Ryne Duren action going -- she can throw fantastically hard, with zero control. And she kind of revels in it.)
