  1. (TB - H + BB + SB - CS) / AB Not that I'm up on every baseball stat, but I never heard of it. I like it thought. It appears that it's trying to measure the players ability to get into scoring position. I'm not sure why it adds walks though.
  2. My initial post was not worded very well. Maybe I should have added an exclamation point. For the most part I understand the ramifications of being out of options. I guess I'm just surprised that TGJ is out of options and that there has not been more discussion about this. Not that he's a major prospect any more (or ever has been), but I think he's a very serviceable 4th outfielder. I have a hard time believing that the Brewers would just let him go. Is there any thought that this increases his chances of making the 25 man roster this year? Or, is there even possibly an assumption that he will make the roster?
  3. I'm sorry if this has already been discussed. Feel free to lock up and redirect if that's that case. On mlbtraderumors.com it lists players that are out of options for 2009. Tony Gwynn Jr. is on that list. Does this mean that if he does not make the 25 man roster out of ST, another team could possibly snatch him up?
  4. I don't have a Wii, so I'm not completely sure about those games. However, doesn't Guitar Hero and Rock Band have a calibration option in their menu that allows you to time your guitar and drums, so that it matches the image on the screen?
  5. Agreed. Also, errors on the football field are not as readily evident to the average fan as they are in baseball. If you make an fielding error, strike out, don't cover a base, make a base running error, etc...pretty much everyone who is paying attention to the game knows it. I think this is partially the reason why soccer became so popular among kids over the past 20 years (no one played soccer when I was a kid). Parents were not comfortable with seeing there kid strike out or drop a fly ball. In soccer they can just run around, and although many parents and players may mumble under their breaths about such players, the spot light is not as glaring as it is in baseball.
  6. Baseball, more than other sports imho, really speeds up when you are playing or coaching it vs. when you are watching it. In football, the offense and defense calls a play on each snap of the ball. Each player knows what there role is for that play. They know who they are supposed to block and which direction to block them, what route to run, who they need to cover, etc. In baseball, it's not as planned out. You can be in the field and not have a ball hit at you for 5 innings. Suddenly the ball is coming towards you and you need to know what you should be doing. Even when the ball is not hit at you, you need to know what you should do (take a cut off, back up, cover a base for a throw, etc). You have no idea where the ball will be hit next or what will happen next, but you need to know what your role is in all possible situations that could possibly occur at that time (bunt, fly ball, pick off, steal, etc). Most of the time, professional ball players make this look so simple.
  7. As many as mentioned, the WS will never be able to compete with the Super Bowl because of 1 game vs a series. Add to that the 2 week build up and the fact it that it takes place in the dead of Winter, I'm not really sure what baseball could do. I do favor starting the games a little earlier (7pm vs 7:40). I would not be in favor of adding a 7th inning stretch show. This would only push back the end of the game even further and be unfair to the starting pitcher who is pitching a gem in a close game. Regarding the complexity of Football vs. Baseball. I'm not sure which is more complex. I do know that people who do not have a clear understanding of baseball tend to over simplify the game. Peavy, not to question your baseball knowledge, but "don't see how the country's IQ has to rise to appreciate 'throw ball, hit ball" is an example of the type of thing I hear from non-basball fans when questioning why anyone enjoys baseball. People who think baseball is simple, should read the book "Three Nights in August" or try coaching the game sometime. Even at the youth level.
  8. And That..that makes sense. I'll keep that in mind. I did install a new antivirus program lately (got rid of McAfee and installed Norton). I did this because I kept getting the blue screen of death when I opened up my lap top. Now, after installing Norton, instead of the blue screen of death. I get "Preparing to Standby". I took it off the stand by mode. Now I get "Preparing to hibernate".
  9. Have not even tried that. I'll try it tonight.
  10. Yeah, as FTJ stated, this is similar to what a lot of youth baseball tournaments do. Generally, it's referred to as the "California tie-breaker rule". However, instead of guys on 1st and 2nd, each team starts their half inning with a runner on 2nd. The runner is usually the player that made the last out in the previous inning.
  11. Looking at that cnnsi "article" (if you can call it that), there really does not seem to be much substance to it at all. Looks like it was taken from the Boston Globe and all it basically states is that the Brewers are a team that needs another starter such as Peavy. It does not mention anything about any type of source from either organization stating that the two teams have even spoken with each other regarding Peavy
  12. The thing is, I'm not using the laptop on battery power (because the battery doesn't last). I pretty much always have it plugged in. Also, it's not so much an issue of it comming out of standby. I don't think it ever gets to standby or hibernation.
  13. There have been a lot of threads started by brewerfan.net members looking for assistance with fixing errors or problems with their computers. I thought I would start a general thread that people could go to and possibly get help from other members who are far more intelligent when it comes to computers than people like me. I have a Dell laptop (Inspiron 600m - about 4 years old.). Lately, when I close the cover (without turning it off), then open it up later, I get the screen that states "Preparing to Stand By". It freezes at that screen and never actually goes to stand by mode. So, I have to turn my lap top off and turn it back on every time I want to use it. I also have a problem with the battery on this laptop. It does not hold it's charge very long and it seems to get overly hot (this laptop was not part of the Dell battery recall). I ordered a new battery today. I'm not sure it this will help my problem above, but I was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions regarding my standby issue.
  14. Wednesday night I'm watching channel 6 in Milwaukee and they give the 7 day forecast. They had Monday and Tuesday as being brutally cold, something like a high of 5 or something like that. None of the other stations were forecasting anything like this. Most of them had highs around 20 for Monday. I notice Channel 6 has changed it's forecast, but it's forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday still seem pretty different from other local forecasts. I'm hoping Channel 6 is wrong channel 6: http://images.yuku.com/image/pjpeg/6681519477fb901a961ce8ab8f50c3ed61d2f46.pjpg Channel 4: http://images.yuku.com/image/pjpeg/dc43501991c5799ef4f09fb71c78e98cb72e094.pjpg
  15. I'm not sure I understand your argument. Whether CC makes 161MM or 100K and regardless of how his pay is established, he has not taken any greater financial stake or risk in the "company" he works for than the guy who make french fries at McDonalds, unless I'm unaware of some investment that he has made in the Yankees.
  16. Isn't the Cubs projected sale price around $900 million or something like that. That's not a financial risk? It may be easy to "bail out" a team here or there like the Expos. However, if the industry goes south in general, there would not be a whole lot the owners could do to save their investments. To say the owners take on almost no risk is a bit of a stretch. If that were the case there would have been a lot more than 2 or 3 possible buyers when the Brewers went up for sale. I do know, however, that the players take no financial risk over and above what any American employee does.
  17. Players are not paid because of input. They are paid tons of money because they are hard to replace. Fans want to see the best talent on the field. Not everyone can play baseball at the MLB level. I also understand that a handful of owners are to blame for some of the outrageous contracts. I understand this and I have no problem with it. I have a problem with millionaire ballplayers who still feel that they are being treated unfairly or that they should have more input into the business of baseball. What if baseball were to take a big hit in popularity for some reason? You never know what the future holds. Boxing and Horse racing use to be 2 of the 3 most popular sports in America. At the current time, baseball owners are reaping the rewards of their investments in a very popular sport. If the climate were to change. They would take losses. Not only in future revenue, but in investments already made. Players would only take losses when it comes to future pay. They take no real financial risks. In fact just the opposite.(See B. Zito and A. Jones). People who take financial risks take bigger hits when things don't turn out well and by the same token should reap greater rewards (vs. those who don't take financial risks), during successful periods.
  18. But it is always the right time for billionaire owners to complain about having to pay players what they are worth! The owners are the investors. They are the business men (As much as players like to think they are business men, they are not. They have made no financial investment towards ownership of a baseball team). Baseball is a business. MLB is played in USA and Canada . The goal of businesses in a capitalistic society (USA and Canada still support capitalism...correct? Sometimes I'm not sure anymore), is to maximize profits for its shareholders/owners. The fact that the players reportedly receive over 50% of the revenues (not profits..revenues!) and that they have any say in how the business of baseball is run (approval of salary caps and revenue sharing) is a complete joke to me. I'm not saying that the business of baseball in the first half of the 20th century was fair at all to players. However, it's completely ridiculous that the owners hands are tied by the player's union when it come to making decisions that effect the business and profitability of baseball.
  19. When people make statements like this, I always wonder what their source is. How do you know they are making ridiculous profits. No one really knows. I know Fortune always come out with estimates of teams profitibility. However, even they are making estimates based on assumptions. I have a hard time seeing how the Marlins make any money at all when many of their games have 1,000 or less fans in the stands.
  20. Yeah, I gotta say that I have not been the biggest Cameron supporter. However, my family and I really enjoyed his enthusiasm at the Winter Warm-up. I think he's starting to become one of my son's favorite players.
  21. I'm sure there are a lots of unemployed people out there that would love to sue corporate America for collusion. It would be completely tasteless for men who are paid millions to play a game to cry about collusion in these times. I really can't stand the players union.
  22. Since I really don't get out to see movies to often, this is the first time I've checked out this thread. Wall-e? Really? We rented it a couple of weeks ago. I was not overly impressed at all. It was ok. Seemed like any other animated film to me (I guess I don't have an eye for what makes animation great). My son, who was the one that wanted to rent the movie, did not care for the story that much and was somewhat bored with it.
  23. When I first saw the title of the thread, I thought maybe Ken Macha had tapped into BF.net.
  24. I agree. I will never understand the hesitancy of trading within your own division. Both teams are giving up something and getting something. What's the big deal?
  25. I think I found what you are looking for. www.retrosheet.org. Here's a link to 2008 totals http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2008/YT_2008.htm It doesn't appear to give MLB totals but it give NL and Al totals (you can just add the two together). If you are looking for other years go to Games/People/Parks at the top of the page. Select Games, then regular season.Choose the season you want. Then scroll down below the standings and select "ML team totals". Hope this helps. Edit: Actually, if you go to ML splits ( a little below ML team totals), it will give you MLB totals as well as AL and NL totals.
