  1. My thoughts exactly. When I watch him pitch, the first thing I always look at is the pitch speed. When his fastball is topping out in the low 90's, I'm concerned. Remeber opening day? I seem to remember he was hitting 97 late in the game. I don't know if he's done that since.
  2. You missed my point. I meant that all other things being equal, it seems like the Cubs historically have a history of tripping all over themselves. Although, yes I do realize that this tends to happen in the playoffs for them. But, not always. No one will ever forget the '69 pennant race. Then there is also 2004, where they fell apart down the stretch and blew their opportunities for a wild card. I was just trying to put an optimistic spin on things...which is unusual for me.
  3. Regardless of how many wins it will take, is there any better team to be chasing? Think about it. If we were chasing the Cardinals, I think I would be much more negative about our chances. But this is the Cubs. Sooner or later something will go horribly wrong for them. It's got to...right?
  4. Not to change the subject, and maybe this was discussed in another thread, but anyone thought about what the pitching match up would be if the Cubs and Brewers had to play a tie breaker. It looks like Villanueva would be scheduled for the Brewers. Hard to say for the Cubs, because the have 2 off days and may rearange their starting pitching a little..but it looks like it would possibly be Marquis or Hill.
  5. Although I have always enjoyed stats, I'm not nearly as well versed on stats as many of the posters here. I went to that Baseball-Reference.com and could not find where they list line-ups or batting orders. There was a link to lineups under teams on the left..but it took me directly to the Cards and it looked like it was 2006 info. This came up before in another thread, but I'm curious as to how lineup (batting orders) now compare to that of 30 years ago. My guess would be that there were far fewer (at least 20% less) different batting orders used by teams back then. Is there any way to get this information on Baseball-reference, or do you need a subscription?
  6. I appreciate the fact that he's serious about the game, but I would like to see some more excitement. I liked Sutton better. Powell is possibly my all-time favorite..knowledgable about the game and excitable.
  7. Part of my issue with the cold weather is not so much me, but my wife. I do hate cold weather with a passion, but I would never forego a baseball game (especially a late season meaningful baseball game), just because it's a little chilly. I married someone who was not really a big baseball fan. After 14 years and hundreds of baseball games and several trips to spring training and giving birth to a son who is also a big baseball fan, she has taken a little more of an interest in baseball. However, I was never comfortable sitting next to my wife at County stadium on a 40 degree day in April with the wind whipping around the mostly empty stadium, knowing that she was ready to leave by the top of the 2nd inning. Now, I can take her to a game knowing that she's not so uncomfortable that she want's to leave.
  8. I'll reiterate what I stated in my original post: I realize it was only 10 or 15 minutes without a score and that they probably would have realized it eventually, but come on! This is a pennant race, they should be on top of that from the start of the game. It's probably just me, I'm a little anal when it comes to this stuff. Everyone else is probably wondering what the big deal is also. If you want to suggest that this post be moved to "off-topic", or disagree and state that you don't think it's that big of a deal, that's fine. But to say "I don't see what the point of this post is" I think is rude. And heck if they don't make it in 26 years, what's 27? and if they don't make it in 27 years, what's 28?.......and so on and so on.
  9. Gee, sorry to waste your time. I'll never post something this meaningless again.http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/frown.gif
  10. I'm a wimp. I like it closed when it's below 60-65. Although I do understand what you are saying about the whole fall playoff/penant race atmosphere and the cool Sept/Oct nights.
  11. I was at the game on Saturday night and at around 7pm I started looking for the Cubs score on the Auxillary scoreboard in left field. It got to be 7:10, 7:15, 7:20...no Cubs score (they still had the score from the day game). So, I went down to the fan assistant desk and asked why they were not showing the Cub score. The first reply I got was "They played today, the score is out there." Then I said, "Yes, but they are playing a double header." Then anothre person at the desk said "Well, it hasn't started yet". To which I replied, "Uh, I think it started at 7:00 or 7:05" They finally agreed to make a call to whoever is in charge of it and shortly after I got back to my seat the score was being posted. I realize it was only 10 or 15 minutes without a score and that they probably would have realized it eventually, but come on! This is a pennant race, they should be on top of that from the start of the game.
  12. Sometimes, if you're willing to change positions, that will make you more marketable too.
  13. An incentive laden contract based on performance is always nice, but make sure you set those performance thresholds within reason.
  14. I think the argument from some of us is that she still does have that commodity. Trust me, I'm not a Brittney fan at all. Don't like her music and I think she has gone off the deep end a little. However, I'm having trouble understanding how that is considered "fat"?! If that's considered fat, I feel sorry for young women that are held to such standards.
  15. Agreed. I read about how out of shape she was and had to watch the video. That's out of shape? Wow, I guess I'm getting old and my standards are getting looser, but I don't ever remember a time when I considered that to be "out of shape". Don't want to generalize, but today's generation seems to have an obsession with super skinny models.
  16. I remember watching the first season of the Real World before I got married and old. I watched some of the seasons after that. Occasionally, now if I'm flipping through the channels I'll catch it and watch a few minutes of it. I think the RW was creative and innovative when it first came out. However, now, like most other reality shows, I tend to doubt the authenticity of it. Seems to be a lot of "ratings created" drama and shock value that goes on.
  17. I'm not an expert on this by any means. However, can there be any tests done for HGH by doing blood tests? There was a guy on XM's baseball chanel the other morning (did not catch the name, it might have been Rosenthal), that was arguing that MLB currently does not do blood testing and that sooner or later, if they want to take further steps to "clean the game up", they are going to have to. He stated that there is not to many other professions that require blood tests and the Union would fight any proposal to do this. However, he also stated, this isn't another profession and if the players are tired of having their accomplishments scrutinized by the fans, media, etc and are serious about fighting the issue, then they need to start allowing blood tests. Also, I thought someone mentioned to me that in other sports (cycling?), they take a measure of the athletes for levels of testosterone (maybe this is what blood tests do?). If the levels are above a level that would be considered reasonable (that would be naturally produced by the body), then they are assumed to be taking some form of PEDs.
  18. I assume that was supposed to be in blue....they couldn't possibly have more reality shows. Along the same line...Hey, ESPN classic, how about showing some classic sporting events again?
  19. I doubt that there will be any tickets available for a "camp out" type of scenario.
  20. Is anyone else familiar with the Robin Yount contiplating pro golf story. I believe Yount missed the first month and a half of the 1978 season because of an injury (this helped Molitor break into the majors). At the time, the story was that Yount was thinking about quiting baseball to pusue a career as a pro golfer. In fact, I think this was reported in the papers. However, I thought I read a couple of years ago that this was not a true story.
  21. I would assume was relaying the signal in to Leyva. Maybe he didn't watch Leyva giving the signal to Gross, but if he did, couldn't he have quickly ran out of the dugout and called a time out? I don't know...maybe not. Sometimes there is not a lot of time between when the signal is given and when the pitcher begins his motion.
  22. I'm very boring when it comes to Subway... 6" Turkey on hearty italian provolone cheese letuce mayo.
  23. Actuallly he missed it by 10 seasons....1992: 92-70
  24. Awesome song....I'm a huge Steely Dan fan.
