  1. Torrealba isn't going to be a back up anywhere so we don't have anything to worry about him. Although I wouldn't have a problem with him being the full time catcher. We don't need 9 offensive players. A catcher's main job is to call a great game and make the pitchers comfortable out there. If he can hit his own weight that's just a bonus. The other 7 or 8 if Gallardo is pitching can make up the offense.
  2. What did we accomplish? Well for starters we showed we are for real and not a team to take for granted anymore. We solidified ourselves on the National League map. We showed that we have tremendous young talent in many positions and they now have the bitter taste of losing out at the last minute on a pennant and will hopefully come back next year with a little more drive and knowing what they need to do to get that pennant. We gelled more as a team. Every team has it's weakness but I think we also showed that Melvin needs to shore up the bullpen. We have surplus starting pitching to move to do so. Some kids named Gallardo and Braun who had never played in the majors before showed they are not only ready to play in the majors but that they will likely never know what kind of relaxing things players do during the allstar break as they will always be playing in the game. The fan base showed they will support a winner and loaded up Mark A with enough to give Doug the money to fill in the gaps the team showed. Sure there were a few negatives but the positives far outweighed them.
  3. I wish Dennis well in the future and hope he can put it together wherever he goes. My point though was I believe there is a real connection between how you are raised and how you succeed down the road. When your parents, relatives, etc put their feelings completely on the line on a message board it really raises into question a lot of things. A lot of us have played organized sports over the years with guys that made it pro. When you get on these elite teams some parents don't seem to realize most of these kids were the stars on their previous team. Ya even the 5th outfiedler was the best player on his team before this one. Instead of encouraging them to work to get better some parents blame all their kids problems or lack of playing time on the coach or the organization. The kids with the parents blaming others never seemed to make it all the way in my experience. No matter how much talent you have you still need coaching to polish this talent. If you don't listen you never refine the raw skills. Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember Dennis's Dad ripping the Brewers and the Huntsville organization in the past pretty harshly on this message board. Why someone would do that only they know. Think it ok but post your thoughts for everyone to read kind of silly. We all know what Hendrickson's dad had to say. Raw talent will only take you so far. Genetics have a role as well.
  4. I don't think his dad has posted in at least a year. But he used to.
  5. I think with Sarfate you have the "father" factor. Much like Hendrickson and others from the recent past. These guys never make it and you have to wonder about their mental makeup. Instead of encouraging their kids to do their best and learn from the coaches their dads tend to blast the organization, manager, etc through Brewerfan. If the kids grew up with this type of attitude at home (It's not my kids fault it's someone elses) it's not really that surprising that they never make it even though many and most of them have the raw tools that are necessary. I mean what kind of a father blows off steam by posting negatives about an organization that their kid plays for on the fan message board. The answer is not a very smart one.
  6. Might we just be adding arms to cover the September call ups in a couple of days?
  7. Actually Wickman would make a lot of sense and probably wouldn't mind setting up for the rest of this year if he thought he was auditioning for next years closing job.
  8. Yep. Pretty much as expected. He's well on his way to contributing to costing us a playoff spot.
  9. How could Yo replace either. He is a member of the rotation and unless we fall out the race limiting his innings is not an option anymore. Anyone who thinks otherwise is going to be in for a big surprise.
  10. Yost isn't going anywhere unless this team has a complete meltdown. What he's done with basically a bunch of kids is nothing less than amazing. No one expected the Brewers to be in it for another year. The Cubs have been hot for a while. They are due for a major cooldown. All teams go through there ups and downs and we are due for an up shortly.
  11. If they'd take Turnbow, Parra, and Gwynn or Turnbow, Villaneuva and a minor league position player I'd do it. We have a chance and need to play for this year. The future becomes irrelevant. The future is still looking good with nothing left in the minors if we can win it all this year as free agents will be more willing to come and all the comp picks will quickly refill the minor league system. Besides we are a young team and could wait 3-4 years to re-stock the big league team.
  12. My understanding is he doesn't listen to what the team tells him to do in regards to his delivery, pitch selection, etc. He is a tremendous talent though that if we could get him at the right price could pay off huge dividends in the future. This is more of an offseason type transaction though.
  13. Hopefully he's ok. This injury may actually keep him on the roster longer and give him time to rehab and get a contract for somewhere next year as I think he was likley on the verge of being released prior to this injury.
  14. Why would Philly want him. They already have 2 closers? I doubt we would need to add Gwynn either.
  15. While I agree with those thinking we are on the start of a good run for a few years look what happened in Philly last night with Utley. If the same were to happen to a similar Brewer position player next year I don't care how good you are you could likely kiss away any chance of the playoffs. That's why you need to go for it now because I guarantee it will happen in the next couple of years in a position we don't have the depth to replace in.
  16. I will say this. If we make the playoffs we will generate more fans worldwide because of the TV exposure. That leads to more merchandise sales, general revenue, fans in the seats, payroll, exposure for the city of Milwaukee, etc. If it happens and Linebrink wins even one game for us this makes this the greatest trade in Brewer history over the past 25 years. That's what a lot of people are missing here. It's not about what we traded away. They were all great prospects but were also expendable because of our great drafting in the recent past and overall depth. They all can be replaced. That's not taking anything away from Inman, Garrison or Thatcher but speaks to the overall quality in the minor leagues in this organization.
  17. Both sides traded from strengths here. The Padres have a great pen and still do. Linebrink was expendable even in a pennant race. They truly are that deep. The Padres minor league pitching system sucked. Not so any more. We get help in the pen which we really need. We have tremendous pitching depth in the minors and still do. Its not really a concern that a lot of it is at the minor levels now. Sheets, Yo, Bush, Suppan, Vargas, Capuano, Parra, Villaneuva, am I missing anyone? where all ahead of Inman. I was as big an Inman fan as anyone and seldomly ever missed checking the boxscores when he pitched. However what do you expect to get someone like Linebrink for. No offense to Tony Gwynn Jr or Zach Jackson but if I'm an opposing GM I'm not going to give up a lot for them or guys like them. Certainly nothing like Linebrink. Playoff revenue is huge. Maybe some on this site don't realize this as they weren't even born the last time we had playoff revenue. This at the very least shows we now have an owner who is willing to go for it when the chance presents itself. Right or wrong we just likely outbid some large revenue teams for Linebrink. Without Jack Z and Mark A this wouldn't have been possible.
  18. What's not to like. We just got one of the premier releivers on the market for some great young talent who weren't going to pitch in Milwaukee this year. Inman, Garrison, and Thatcher all project as probable major leaguers and San Diego might think they've won this trade in 2 or 3 years but we are about the present. If this doesn't send a message to the team nothing will. Now all we need is an upgrade in the outfield or another quality bat for the bench.
  19. When you're in a pennant race definately you don't trade starting players for prospects no matter how good they are. If Melvin was to do this today he would be fired. That is if he made it out of town without a police escort.
  20. I wouldn't be surprised if we traded him and moved on. Not give him away but move him to another organization for something decent. He has just shown a huge character flaw and a lack of maturity. He has to drop out of the top 10 on the Power 50 at this point. Other than Turnbow how many minor leaguers who have tested positive have made it or are legitimate prospects at this point? I'm just asking as I am not sure.
  21. Extremely disappointed is all I can say. His chances of ever making it just diminished a lot. Not sure what he could have been thinking. It's very disappointing to see such a talent wasted. He probably has to repeat at Brevard now. Basically a full year without catching now. Won't really matter if his bat is ready if his Defense isn't.
  22. Harang may prove to be a throwback to another era but he pitches an incredible amount of innings every year and could be the most abused pitcher in baseball. It hasn't seemed to affect him yet but I'm not sure how much more he has in the tank. That being said I've liked him since early last year. To get him and Dunn your parting with Gwynn, Villaneuva, and probably a top notch prospect like Inman or Jeffress, and one or two more 2nd tier prospects like Zach Jackson. Even that likely wouldn't be enough. That being said our chances of winning it all would dramatically improve if we could pull something like this off.
  23. Your going to have to start with Inman or Jeffress and build a package around them to get a guy like Nathan. Jeffress, Gwynn, and Jackson might get it done. I think it's a realistic offer for him. Not sure I'd want to do it but it's realistic.
  24. Yep, I'd throw in Ricky but the Reds wouldn't go for it. Dunn would be a serious offensive upgrade over Jenkins who could either become the 4th outfilelder or be moved to replace Wise. This isn't likely going to happen though. Then again it is the Reds we are talking about.
  25. If I eliminate some of Wes Obermuller's starts he could be a Cy Young winner too. The overall numbers are what you get. Don't blame a dead arm on 130 pitches for 6 bad starts. 1 or 2 yes but not 6. The guy just doesn't seem right to me. I'll admit part of it is instinct.
