  1. Is it me, or has "summer food" stayed around a bit longer this year? By summer food, I mean sweet corn, watermelon, honeydew, etc... Normally, I start buying sweet corn at the end of July, and by the end of August, it's gone. But some of the best corn I've had all year I bought in September. The stuff I bought at the beginning of August wasn't nearly mature enough, and wasn't nearly as flavorful. It just seems that everything this growing season has been later.
  2. I think some are re-labeled, but some are made by the "generic" company. Wal-Mart approached the company my sister works for, and essentially is going to pay them to re-label the product as "Sam's Choice." But a good friend of mine works for a grocery chain, and he says their store brands are unique...they try to emulate the name-brands as closely as possible, but it's not just a re-label.
  3. Wow Stalton...what a crappy insurance plan. "Oh, we'll cover you, but as soon as you get some sort of disease/health issue that will require us to pay some money so you can get the proper treatment, we are going to drop you." I don't think I've ever heard of that before.
  4. I am very disappointed that the 90% chance of heavy rain yesterday resulted in 0.01 inches of rain at home. Also, I have yet to hear tornado sirens outside of the tests they run every once in a while. This is the first summer in a long time that has happened.
  5. Gerald the one eye-browed baby (Maggie's enemy from The Simpsons) The Evil Monkey (Family Guy) Dr. Evil (Austin Powers) Jaws (Bond films) Lex Luther (Superman) The Grinch Boris and Natasha (Rocky and Bullwinkle) Flintheart Glomgold (Ducktales---Scrooge's enemy) Joker (Dark Knight)
  6. I'm starting day 7 of a 10 day road trip with my wife...and...inlaws. My mother-in-law is driving me nuts on this trip. I'll spare the details, but I hope there is some kind of prize waiting for me when I get home.
  7. I'm currently out in Wyoming, an hour east of Grand Teton National Park. While the forecast back home in Madison is 88 and 92 for this weekend, it's supposed to be 56 today where I am, and a low of 33 tonight. I didn't bring jeans with me on this trip, only shorts. 56 is a little chilly for August 8.
  8. There is no photo enhancing on that picture...the sky really looked that way. It was one of the neatest skies I have ever seen, yet very eerie.
  9. I was reading the forecast for the weekend, and according to the NWS, Friday could get interesting. In the forecast discussion, they mentioned that Friday is shaping up to resemble a pretty significant tornado outbreak in Wisconsin...June 23, 2004 (June 23, 2004 Severe Weather Summary) I remember this night pretty well. A tornado touched down in the Madison city limits near Westgate Mall, and proceeded just south of campus and downtown. I saw this as a funnel, after the damage was done, and it disappeared into the sky, with the sky rotating above it. Perhaps one of the scariest things I have ever seen.
  10. Menotti, do they still make Simplicity tractors and snow blowers in Port Washington? I knew many of people who worked at that plant. Don't they still test them right outside of Port, too? I think my dad goes out to that field to fly his remote airplanes. Joey, that post made me bust out laughing. Classic. I see Home Depot has a fairly cheap, no-frills mower that has a Briggs engine...similar to Fallout's link, only with a rear bag and mulching (which I want), and it's under $200. I'm sort of going away from the idea that I need self-propelled. If I would get it, I'd get the personal pace from Toro, but I'm not sure if it's worth the money right now.
  11. If I get a self-propelled, it would be a personal pace mower...not too many of those available, though. I won't consider a side-bag. We had one of those a long time ago, and it was annoying. We have a large maple, then a smaller tree with small leaves (I don't know what kind it is). I'm trying not to over think it too much...but I am curious to hear experiences with a cord. I can foresee it being very difficult using a cord, especially around the trees.
  12. My current cell phone is the third phone I've had that has had a camera. Up until now, I have never really used the camera feature too much...largely because the quality of photo is so horrible. I think I have discovered perhaps the single greatest use for the camera on my phone...taking pictures of things when I am comparison shopping. Yes, I could just take a pen and paper...but it's so easy to snap a picture of the product and/or the price and information tag, go home and research the exact thing you saw in the store.
  13. Once again, I turn to BF.net for some advice/personal stories. We move into our house this weekend, which means that I have to purchase a lawn mower pretty much right away, especially if we get rain like they say we will this week. I have done some research and some shopping around, and I am trying to decide what type of mower to get. Our yard isn't very big, so my first instinct was to consider a reel mower. However, we have lots of trees, and I have read that they don't do well over even the smallest of sticks, and I want something that can mulch/pick up leaves this fall. Now I'm considering either a traditional 2-cycle gas mower with self-propulsion, or a corded electric mower. My parents have a Toro personal pace mower, and I loved that when I had to mow my parents yard. The pros of a gas is they are more powerful, tend to have a wider mowing deck, and there is no cord to futz with. The pros of an electric are they are cheaper, don't use gas, are quieter, and I'm guessing have less maintenence than a gas mower...but you have the cord. (Note...I'm not considering a cordless electric because I have read too many reviews about the batteries not holding charges.) I'm just curious as to what people have themselves. I'm more interested in hearing if anyone has a corded electric mower, because that's what I'm leaning towards right now. Thanks!
  14. I saw this advertised on TV tonight... Weather Call Bob Lindmeier on Channel 27 can call you when there is bad weather outside!
  15. I think it's either U-Line or E-Line. Back to the Wave...why do they need new ownership? I just figured they would be able to join any new league if they wanted. They are a long standing franchise with a solid following, I'd think ownership wouldn't be an issue. I think the larger issue is every indoor league fails, and the Wave ends up in a new league every year. I thought the Wave would run out of leagues to play in before they folded.
  16. Yep, bought a house! Move in 3 weeks. Back to bugging me.... To the person/people who shot off firecrackers across the street at 3:30 AM, please stop.
  17. Trying to order internet service for our new house. I can find all the introductory offers and prices without problem, but what will it cost me after 6 months, or after a year? They don't bother to tell you any of that information.
  18. RoCo, I'm not going to say Madison is easier than Milwaukee to get around, but I'm going to try to explain why people think that. I'd argue that most people who live in the Madison area, or commute into the city as you do, have never lived in Milwaukee. They see it as a big city, and are unfamiliar with it, and perhaps afraid of it. Anyone who visits a city they do not know will always say it is hard to get around. Likewise, people who live here think Madison is easy to get around. That's because they have figured out all of the back ways around the city. Having lived in both cities, there are positives and negatives to both in terms of traffic. Regarding the layout...the worst part of it is there is no highway spur into the downtown area. The closest thing is John Nolen, and that becomes a parking lot in the AM (I'm assuming that's the way you take to get into the city). There is only one other option from the Beltline to downtown, and that is Park Street, and that is even worse. Top those off with the occasional train that makes its way through downtown at 7:30, and it becomes a real mess. I've also notices the lack of love for left turn arrows/turn lanes, and cars that park on the street during times they are not allowed to. Even living here, and having to take some of the major streets to go do my shopping and such is a pain. It's even worse now because every road is under construction so it seems. I won't argue with you that there are times of the day where I hate driving in this city.
  19. We won again, 11-4. That puts us at 8-1 on the year.
  20. I may be the only one confused by this, but if a guy is pitching so well, why go to a six-man rotation? If a guy is pitching so great, wouldn't you go to a 4-man rotation? Wow...my head is about to explode.
  21. According to New Glarus's website, Yokel is supposed to be released at any time, being out from July through September. It wasn't here in 2008, so I'm looking forward to its return. That was one of my favorite beers.
  22. By bang, I hope you are not meaning severe. We're headed camping this weekend, and it would be nice to not have to worry about hail/high wind/tornadoes/heavy rain.
  23. I have this problem when my wife doesn't want to turn on the A/C. What I have done is have a fan (a box fan works wonders) in a window and have it blowing out. Pushing air out will lower the air pressure in your house, and cool air from outside will come inside to equalize the pressure.
  24. We lost for the first time in 18 games last night. The team we played hasn't lost in over 4 years. The team is largely made up of current/former college baseball players (from Edgewood College) and Home Talent League people. Only lost 6-3, though.
  25. Well, people were wondering where summer was. Here it is. What a wonderful heat wave we're having. I already miss spring and 70s.
