  1. I agree with owbc- the manager is generally futile. We'll love him because he's different, then hate him because he's the same as everyone else. Davey Lopes is the worst. Other than Royster. No one can be as bad as Royster. But Yost makes the most mistakes of any manager I've ever seen... except Macha. No manager can be worse than Macha. Except Roenecke. No one can be as bad as Roenecke. Except the next guy. Rinse, repeat. For the record, though, I'd fire Roenecke at the end of the year after tearing down the roster in July. But if the next guy wins, it'll be because the roster's better, not because he's a better strategist. Because he won't be, in all likelihood.
  2. Making the trip down tomorrow morning- wouldn't miss this one for the world!
  3. Interestingly enough, though, is that Wisconsin's RPI is now ahead of both Duke's and Virginia's at this point. As I said yesterday, I think it may have forced the committee to choose one or the other, but not both. And with both losing and Wisconsin/Arizona rolling, I don't know if either ACC team ends up on the one line. It's also worth pointing out that while the Big Ten might be Wisconsin and basically everyone else, the same goes for Arizona in the Pac-12 as well. If they want to punish us for a weak conference, AZ should be punished too.
  4. I think both Duke and Virginia losing may have changed the debate between which 2 of UVA/Villanova/Wisconsin get the remaining ones to which ACC team should get a one. Villanova losing to Xavier would still help Wisconsin a ton, though.
  5. Yeah, I'm with RockCo. I don't think this was just a trade to get what we could for the last year of a guy nearing free agency, my gut says the $9 million cleared from payroll was a very important part of the trade on the Brewers' end as well. I'm expecting one more 'significant' move from the Brewers in the next week or two.
  6. Away from what? A World Series Championship? Perhaps... But this team almost certainly was a competent 1B away from the playoffs and a division title this year, and that's 1 player.
  7. I think this fixed one of two clear problems with the team, fourth OF/bench, with very little doubt. So I'm happy with this trade. My issue, as others have said as well, is that we couldn't fix the other issue of 1B. I'm hoping someone clears waivers that might offer us some help.
  8. He's relatively cheap and solves 1B for at least 1.5 years (possibly 2.5 with the option). I'd be thrilled to fix that massive problem, even if it's at the expense of a top 10 prospect.
  9. Is the difference between filling 3 rotation spots vs. 2 rotation spots going to be the difference between competing and not competing in 2016? Adding in the likelihood that it improves the team's chances in 2014 and 2015 in the meantime, I think it's a tough choice but one that would instantly take us from a playoff contender to a pennant contender both this year and next. We're probably not there without a better arm at/near the top of the rotation.
  10. This. You don't deal from a position of weakness. If Nelson and Thornburg are the key pieces of the deal, fine. If it's Nelson and Gennett, no way.
  11. Everyone except the Phils knew that the Howard deal was going to be horrendous almost right away. There's probably value to the Brewers as an Overbay replacement, but only if Philly eats almost the entire contract.
  12. Yeah, as much as I like Corey and would love to have him back for sentimental reasons, he's been pretty bad this year and probably isn't an upgrade over what we already have at this point.
  13. I've got to seriously disagree with you here. Wisconsin may not quite be on the level of Colorado, California and Oregon, but there is a huge amount of great beer in the state. Tyranena, Lake Louie, Ale Asylum, Oso, Potosi, Lakefront, Central Waters are all fantastic brewers and that's only scratching the surface. New Glarus is the 18th largest brewery in the country and it only sells within the state. It's larger than many significant national and regional brands like Founders, Anchor Steam, and Great Lakes. This is a pretty amazing accomplishment. The state is seventh in the country in total craft brewers. Oregon might be heaven if all you want is IPA, but I'll take the balance and selection here over pretty much any state other than Colorado and Michigan. And that doesn't include the great brewpubs like the previously mentioned Great Dane, Vintage Brewing, etc that are prevalent in Madison/Milwaukee.
  14. Wow. That makes rooting against Florida and easy call.
  15. Still seems surreal and haven't really had a chance to soak it in despite living in Madison... just reaching this level when it always seems so unlikely or far away every year, despite the 2000 run. It sets up a very win-able matchup vs. Michigan or Kentucky next Saturday, with a potential win setting up a colossal battle vs. Michigan State or Florida. As unreal as it seems, I'll be cheering hard for Florida if MSU beats UConn today.
  16. Well, apparently the Smart to Marquette rumors were started by a student journalist and may never have been close to legit: http://deadspin.com/shaka-smart-not-actually-marquettes-new-coach-despite-1550922499/1551468628/+bubbaprog
  17. Down goes Minnesota! Wisconsin vs. OSU for the title tomorrow!
  18. Very Bielema-esque move there.... Va Tech really isn't an upgrade except for conference.
  19. I also have a pair of tickets available to the evening session (session 2) of the NCAA Tourney on Thursday. Section 408 row X, face for the pair is $132. Please feel free to PM me with a reasonable offer. Thanks!
  20. I was annoyed about not being in the Midwest Region until I saw that bracket. WiSt, Michigan, Duke, Louisville, St Louis, Kentucky... Yikes.
  21. I think if he holds on to everybody its not his call, it's Mark A's. I think we've seen enough quotes/comments/history from Mark suggesting that it may be him that's unwilling to punt on a year. Obviously, that's a significant potential distinction. You can fire a GM, but not an owner. Right, Herb Kohl?
  22. Surprising and exciting. The new format might help them move through the plot better than in some previous seasons (no 'Terri amnesia' type plot lines to fill in time). This went from rumor to done deal in just a few days.
  23. Guys, it really doesn't change based on the manager. No one can be worse than Yost. Except Macha. No one can be worse than Macha. Except the current guy. But I'm sure the next guy will have to be better. I get the frustration, and I'm there too... but aside from the few really consistently great managers, they're all the same, and almost certain to have either the same flaws as the last guy or new, more craptacular flaws.
