  1. I also may do a 15-year mortgage. Then again, locking in for 30 years at this point in time could be a steal. Depends on what banks will give me The 'take a 30-year and pay it like a 15-year' strategy that Robin19 mentioned above may make a ton of sense if you're not sure- it gives you flexibility if you can't make the entire payment due to an emergency or something, and have complete control beyond the first 15 years.
  2. Money market vehicles have the risks of interest rate changes and inflation, bonds have the risk of inflation Well, while you're correct, I think that in this context 'no risk investment' was clearly meaning no risk of loss.
  3. No such thing exists. If it did exist everyone would be investing in it. Not right now, but just 1.5 years ago CD's and money markets were paying 5-6% almost across the board.
  4. I'm not saying that those guys don't excite me. I think based on the quote he cited that he was directing his comment at moofnelson, who wrote: We're already looking towards the next crop of budding superstars to replace the current crop that didn't pan out as hoped. IE, who of the current crop didn't pan out as hoped?
  5. Totally false. This guy has been jerked around by this organization so many times its rediculous. I agree completely. Say what you will about Hall, but the guy has really done everything the organization has asked of him even when it was not even close to the best thing for Billy.
  6. I'm in agreement with most here that the best course of action with Fielder is probably to wait until his last season under our control to see where the team is at before making a move, unless we're made an offer we can't refuse. Hardy is a heck of a lot more interesting, however. The team is getting to the point where they really need to figure out what the plan is going to be with Hardy and Escobar, especially if Weeks continues his pace so far and seems to have turned a corner (and ruling out 2B as an option for one of the above). They either need to start negotiating an extension or evaluating their trade options, probably starting this off season. Of course a break-out year for Escobar at the plate would help give us some clarity as well...
  7. Personally I think we should have made a play for Peavy. Or even spending some money on Derek Lowe. You seem to be ignoring the fact that the players have to want to come here as well. The JS ran an article suggesting that Melvin had kicked the tired on Lowe, but that he wasn't interested in coming here, IIRC. And Peavy's unwillingness to waive his no-trade clause to all but a couple of select teams is very well documented.
  8. I just think his failure to target potential long-term players is kind of unfortunate, especially for a team with as many payroll constraints as the Brewers. Potential long-term players usually cost more than the Brewers can afford to give in talent....
  9. Are you investing the money that you aren't using to pay off the loan in something that has/will average better than 2.8%? Not paying it off is fine but only if you are making more in some other venture than the interest that's accruing on the loan. Exactly. As valpo himself mentioned, putting that money into stocks/mutual funds should be able to average you somewhere between 6-10% in a long-ish term investment (ie, considerably more than 2.8%).
  10. Unless, y'know, you just didn't want to be a debtor anymore. You can take the great feeling, I'll take the extra money I'll make instead.
  11. The mortgage loan is (in theory) for an asset that is appreciating in value. Plus it's tax deductible. If not today for you, down the road it may be. Car loans, student loans, et.c should all be paid off as quickly as possible. For the record, student loan interest is tax deductible as well (to a limit). And depending on when people were lucky enough to take out or consolidate their loan, you might not want to pay them off early. I got my consolidation locked in before the major student loan reform of about 5 years ago which caused majorly higher rates, and mine is locked in at 2.875%. I'd be practically nuts to pay that off early....
  12. This probably belongs in the issues forum so it doesn't get overlooked here, I'll move it accordingly.
  13. how many people really have a 6 month "emergency reserve". Does that include money set aside for retirement? Typically no. The 6 month reserve is usually savings, money market, etc that is liquid, penalty-free, and not ear-marked for anything else.
  14. Thanks much Pedro! PM sent.
  15. I started the day with several boxes to unpack/put away, actually did that to some degree and ended the day with more boxes to unpack/put away than I started with. I think I'm doing this wrong somehow...
  16. Lots of condescension in this thread... tone it down, please.
  17. Great, now the Cubs are going to realize that Gregg shouldn't be their closer. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. If Riske's not healthy, he needs to be on the DL. He clearly can't pitch effectively through whatever he's dealing with right now.
  19. BA: 'Riske's still not 100% at this point.' Then why in the world is he out there?
  20. "University of Milwaukee-Oshkosh?" Painful, Rock.
  21. Wow, way to almost make an effort to go after that ball, Prince. Gugh.
  22. Somebody better make the Giants pee in a cup after this game or something....
  23. I'd be thrilled with the Thomas Bobble. Thanks!
  24. Really, if MSU wins the title and goes through Louisville, UCONN, and North Carolina in succession, that's about as tough a gauntlet to run through as there is.
  25. Melvin could have dealt Gwynn to Texas and SD a few years ago. Well, the deal to Texas was for Akinori Otsuka, so even having Gwynn toiling in AAA is better at this point than had that trade gone through. And if SD really wanted him, I'd think they'd have pushed harder to get him in the Linebrink deal when he was still a kind-of prospect.
